I can't speak for everyone, but I know I'm often overwhelmed with the task of sorting through indie games to find the ones that are actually worth playing. I want to narrow that down to the more recent indie games that are must-plays... if you're going to play indie games, play these.

Here are some that I know of, but please suggest ones you've personally finished and think they belong on the list. Feel free to add "+1" comments if your recommendation has already been mentioned.

Axiom Verge
Castle in the Darkness
Crypt of the Necrodancer
Ori and the Blind Forest
Rocket League
Shovel Knight
Titan Souls
Undertale

Downwell?
Invisible Inc?
Party Hard?

Mount&Blade Warband:Viking Conquest Reforged Edition

Yes I know it's technically DLC but the base game is usually dirt-cheap or bundled a lot.

I need to play Crypt of the Necrodancer more, but it's hard to motivate myself - if I'm on the dance pad, I'd rather just play DDR :P

Any of the games Robert Yang released this year:

  1. Succulent
  2. Stick Shift
  3. Cobra Club
  4. Rinse and Repeat

Honorable mention: December 2014's Hurt Me Plenty (by Robert Yang).

My favorite was by that guy who doesn't work for any major company.

What was the name of that game again.... Oh right! Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

Titan Souls won the indie of the year award but undertale was released after most of the vote already casted.. IF you ask me.. undertale should have won.

Ori.. Rocket League and Axiem are all wonderful games too but if you not a fan of those type of game you won't vote for those games. That's why those 3 games didn't make it to game of the year.

Jumpjet Rex, Cloudbuilt, and Flywrench. Flywrench isn't a new game but it recently came out on Steam with a whole bunch of new stuff so I'm counting it as new.
Edit: Somehow I forgot about Binding of Isaac: Rebirth and the Afterbirth DLC.

+1 for FTL. Though that's hardly a 2015 game.

Best fun I had last year was by far with "Unepic", that surprisingly wasn't mentioned yet.

It is an amazing hybrid of an indie gem, that every single adventure/rpg fan should try and it also has some great puzzle (the puzzle part is optional) and platform elements too. It does everything surprisingly well, also has enormous amount of humor, polished in every single aspect, even with an unforgettable crescendo ending, that breaks down all cliches of the genre. You'd be surprised. You even have many choices on how to build your character.

I can't think of a more underrated indie game than this. It is SO SO underplayed.

The Beginner's Guide should definitely be up there. One of the most interesting experiences of 2015, if you ask me. of course you could argue it's not really a game. ;)

Haven't played them all, but Titan Souls disappointed me a bit. Got it with the Devolver Bundle and Not a Hero and Ronin even with bugs, to say 2 games not mentioned yet, are better imho.

Played only Undertale, which is amazing, bought, but haven't tried Invisible Inc. and Her Story yet, which should be good, too.
I'd say Talos Principle, but it was released at the very end of 2014.

P.S. Oh, how could I forgot about The Beginner's Guide?! =O

Contradiction - Spot The Liar! was first game that came to my mind. Funny thing I didn't even know about it before it was part of the BS Killer Bundle.
