I've been mindbogglingly bored for the last couple months or so. I haven't had much drive to play games, and I've read every book, manga, and comic that I own.

Whenever I go shopping for new books, I tend to ask various other customers what they like so I can get an idea of what new books/series to try since, in my opinion, that's one of the best ways to expand your library. Sometimes I'll come across a movie that I enjoy and look to see if it was based on a book. A book I ordered a couple days ago, for example, is one that I looked into simply because my niece showed me a cartoon that was based from it that I very much enjoyed.

So here I am peeps, tell me, what's something I should read? I typically stay in the Fantasy Genre, but I do enjoy straying into Science Fiction and Mystery from time to time.

EDIT:

If it's not too much trouble, could I also get some recommendations for some good young readers books? My niece loves reading but I'm afraid I have very little age appropriate material.

Haven't read anything except medical books lately. I tried to make an ebook out of collection of stories that I've written in my blog after 4 years, and then I got something of 50 pages long.

Last time I read a science fiction book, it was Things Not Seen.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned any Stephen King book. 11/22/63, on of his freshest work is simply great. It is quite long, but I was literally unable to put it down.

Also what others mentioned , Brave new world, 1984, Animal farm, H.p lovecraft, P.K. Dick . You cant go wrong with them.

Oh my goodness, 11/22/63 was most certainly a great read. Such a great read in fact that I was halfway through the book before I thought to myself "You know, I've been in this book store all day, maybe I should buy this book."

I must admit, I've always been just astounded at the fact that many of the books in the Elder Scrolls games are pretty damn fun to read.

Well, I was going to recommend you a bunch of books, but the most of them have been recommended here before.... I think I've not seen anyone talking abbout "Divergent" saga by Veronica Roth. If you like books like Hunger Games you'll love this one!

  • Game of Thrones / A Song of Fire and Ice /
  • Any book by Clive Cussler if you like action / good guy-bad guy stuff
  • Lord of the Rings
  • Alice in Wonderland (it's like a trip through the mind of someone on some strong drugs xD)
  • South; Sir Ernest Shackelton's 1914-18 Expedition (non-fiction, account of the 2 and a half years they had below the Antarctic Circle, with no other civilization anywhere)
  • Haven't read it, but it is on my 'to read' list: Touching the Void (again non-fiction, but supposed to be a superb read)
  • Wardstone Chronicles (are awesome books)
  • Chronicles of the Icemark (again an awesome series)
  • Chronicles of Narnia
  • His Dark Materials

I can't contribute to your books (since I don't know any) but when it comes to reading material how about this- fanfiction! You basically choose a show you really liked, or several(manga and anime usually have A LOT of fanfics)... and, well start searing for stories of it in some fanfic site that suite you. Here's the most popular one. Also crossovers, crossovers could be very interesting! Of course what you'll be looking for is down to your interests. Personally I have to say I've been very nicely surprised by the few absolutely wonderful comedies I've found there. :D

Start reading all Warhammer 40000 rulebooks and codices, preferably from the earliest on (no, seriously, you can skip the crunch and there's plenty glorious stuff to read) and also try to devour all that Black Library(well, not only BL) has to offer. No rulebooks here, just plain fluff. Won't throw titles at you, as they're too plentiful. Also, William Gibson, but only hard cyberpunk here. 40k still IS a gothic dieselpunk science-fantasy with strong mystical elements, so you should be all right. And Our Legiones would grow further ;]

Edit: One more vote for Lovecraft whom I somehow forgotten to recommend. Gotta work on concentration, getting worse still...

If you are into high fantasy, which is what I read most by far, any of these are solid reads...
Any of these Terry Brooks series will take a good chunk of time and they are all great. I favor the first two series because they are fantasy books that tie back into our world and time. Once you read those they also tie into the Shannara series a bit, and that series is way longer so I would take it on last.
Magic Kingdom for Sale.... SOLD (5 book series about a distraught lawyer who buys a fairytale kingdom.)
Running With the Demon series (Word and the Void trilogy)
Shannara series (a ton of books, some great high fantasy series)

Beyond those there are some amazing older series that can eat months of time, like Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. There are a ton of great Dragonlance series. I favor Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman, Jean Rabe, and Don Perrin but there are a TON of books and authors. I would start with Annotated Chronicles which was the start of it all and then see if you want to jump down the rabbit-hole of never ending reading that Dragonlance can provide.

I just started reading some books by Robin Hobb and am really enjoying them as well, Shaman's Crossing was fantastic.

If you are looking towards scifi then this is a good option, and possibly my favorite book of all time...
My favorite book to read (and re-read) is Captain Jack Zodiac. It is hard to desrcibe, kind of off the wall comedy sci-fi
I tent to prefer lighter sci-fi, Douglas Adams books are another good option in that regard.

If you prefer court drama then I would recommend Michael Connelly's books. I prefer them to Grisham's books (by and large) who seems to be more popular in the genre overall.

Impeccable taste sir. I haven't read in a long while (life, ugh), but all of those authors were favourites of mine.

you could try moby dick
though sometimes while reading that book, i thought i was reading a book about whales instead.
I would recommend white fang and the call of the wild by jack london. both are great read and might appropriate for your niece though it does get violent at times and someone gets killed... actually it probably wont be appropriate but still a good read if you like wolfs and the sorts.

Moby Dick is good, but yeah. There is too much sailor themed and whale descripting vocabulary some times, which can be boring.

I'm currently reading Moby Dick (it's free on Google Play store) and I must say I find it extremely boring and also difficult to understand (I'm reading it in English and that's not my mother tongue).
