I've been mindbogglingly bored for the last couple months or so. I haven't had much drive to play games, and I've read every book, manga, and comic that I own.

Whenever I go shopping for new books, I tend to ask various other customers what they like so I can get an idea of what new books/series to try since, in my opinion, that's one of the best ways to expand your library. Sometimes I'll come across a movie that I enjoy and look to see if it was based on a book. A book I ordered a couple days ago, for example, is one that I looked into simply because my niece showed me a cartoon that was based from it that I very much enjoyed.

So here I am peeps, tell me, what's something I should read? I typically stay in the Fantasy Genre, but I do enjoy straying into Science Fiction and Mystery from time to time.

EDIT:

If it's not too much trouble, could I also get some recommendations for some good young readers books? My niece loves reading but I'm afraid I have very little age appropriate material.

I would recommend The Martian Chronicles and Fahrenheit 451, both written by Ray Bradbury.

I recommend you The Witcher series and something from Forgotten Realm. I've really enjoyed books written by R.A. Salvatore. Especially those with Drizzt.

Btw, thanks for the giveaway :)

Salvatore's books are defined by naivety; also I can't stomach "good drows" anymore. They certainly are good for killing time, but be warned, they're mostly cheesy even for D&D settings standards. Not saying that I didn't enjoy reading them ANY bit...

I don't know what is a quality of translation but definitely you should meet The Witcher on paper by Andrzej Sapkowski.

Yep, good thing you refrain from taking responsibility as translations tend to be horrible. In my book (hurr) books oughta be read in the original language. But I agree; I should have recommended the Witcher Saga also, it's very good. Good point.

Unfortunately in the case of Sapkowski the translation is rather poor.

Depends what you are looking for, I enjoy many things so here are my recommendation (that I read and own).

-Discworld universe, my personal favorite is Rincewind and Guards series, you should google for book guide since the author didn't write in chronological order or one story at a time.
-His Dark Materials. There are some quirks you need to get used, like author telling what will happend before it happends, specialy in the beginnings of book 1.

  • Ghost Wars in MechWarrior dark ages series.
  • The London vampire panic (interesting twist, and its not twilight crap).
  • Brothers of the snake from Warhammer 40k universe.
  • Way of the clans (I was able to get legend of the jade phoenix), Battletech universe, don't think you can get those anymore thou, but gives an interesting view into the clans and how they work.

If you want something different the maybe The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls, interesting read and very interesting book desing (haven't seen one like it ever).

Don't really read a lot of scifi and fantasy, so I'll just recommend some of my favorite books.
All Quiet on the Western Front - Different from games, books do depict the German side as well.
Fahrenheit 451
For whom the bell dolls.

Interesting stuff.

I like the Star Wars Republic Commando series, but they probably won't make much sense unless you have played the game.

This book is more for teens, but the Skulduggery Pleasant series is good. Your niece might like them.

  • 11.22.63
  • The Shining
  • It
  • Practically everything else by Stephen King
  • Dead Island, you might like it, the book is tons better than the game.
  • Again, probably more for teens, The Black Book of Secrets
  • A series of unfortunate events
  • The Witcher series
  • Metro 2033 and 2034, you may be able to find English versions

On the subject of Dead Island, I must admit that books that are based off of games tend to be very enjoyable reads when you're a fan of whatever game it may be.
