Hey everyone. I was watching The Mandalorian for the first time today, and although I really enjoyed it, I thought, wouldn't it be nice to know the context of everything? I have never seen anything Star Wars related before, and I think it's better late than never to jump on this 46-year-old bandwagon.

I'm in a unique position where I could watch everything in the order it was released. Or I could experience everything in chronological order and see the saga unfold as one cohesive story. I thought it would be fun to make a poll and give out some games for the Star Wars fans! All the ga's are lvl 3!

Jedi Fallen Order
Knights of the Old Republic
Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

Thank you ahead of time and I hope everyone is having a good day! May the force be with you (or something like that)

edit: Someone suggested I update everyone as I watch the movies. This sounds like fun so I'll probably make a new thread and create a giveaway for every movie/show watched. So far it seems Release Order is the most popular opinion followed by the Machete order, which I didn't even know about! I'll probably watch everything in release order and let you know how I feel!

In which way should I watch the Star Wars franchise for the first time?

It should be, really.
The main character is uninteresting with zero character arc, all the legacy characters are butchered, there is no coherent story and somehow, Palpatine is returned!

The Prequel trilogy is also bad (compared to the original trilogy), not gonna lie, but there is a structured story and some awesome characters and set pieces.

So....

The chronological movie order
If you want to watch films in order of the events that happen, and thus spoil the identity of Luke's father for first-timers, here you go:

Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)
Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002)
Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Solo (2018)
Rogue One (2016)
Episode IV: A New Hope (1977)
Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Episode VI: The Return of the Jedi (1983)
Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015)
Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (2017)
Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (2019)

But if you want to see everything..... here is the list:

The complete Star Wars saga order
Here is an all-encompassing order - with all the movies and shows from the Star Wars saga in chronological order. The saga began in 1977, and since then, there have been new trilogies added as well as countless spinoffs in the form of live-action and animated TV shows and movies. Not all of them are great, but if you want to take in every bit of Star Wars (even the 1978 holiday special), this is the chronological order for you.

Star Wars series and limited specials are bolded below.

Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)
Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002)
Lego Star Wars: The Yoda Chronicles (2013 to 2014)
Lego Star Wars: The Padawan Menace (2011)
The Clone Wars (2008 to 2014)
Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Star Wars: The Bad Batch (2021 to Present)
Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
Solo (2018)
Star Wars Rebels (2014 to 2018)
Andor (2022)
Rogue One (2016)
Star Wars: Droids (1985 to 1986)
Episode IV: A New Hope
Star Wars: Holiday Special (1978)
Lego Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Out (2012)
Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Episode VI: The Return of the Jedi (1983)
Lego Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures (2016 to 2017)
Lego Star Wars: Droid Tales (2015)
Ewoks (1985 to 1986)
The Mandalorian (2019)
The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
Star Wars: Resistance (2018 to Present)
Lego Star Wars: The Resistance Rises (2016)
Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2016)
Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (2017)
Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Star Wars: Forces of Destiny (2017 to Present)

I have to say that Ewoks are pretty rare to find and see them

With the chronological order you might want to quit the project rather soon, so release order.

And with Andor we are for the first time ever in a position where some Star Wars content is worth all the trouble of knowing the complete saga. ๐Ÿ˜…

Just watch the original 3 movies.
Have fun with them and thanks for the GAs :o)

Only one other movie (Rogue One) and the series Andor and The Clone Wars are good.

The rest is mediocre and partly typical hollywood 0815 stuff.
Mass productions from writers that invest only 2 brain cells for the plot -with other words a lot of stolen "ideas" and loopholes so big that star destroyers would fit into- and actors that are so bad that i could do it on the same level -so it feels for fans and people that like star wars, like a slap in the face-.
On the positive side are always the music but that is, at least for me, not enough when i watch a movie/serie^^.

I never watched the Lego Star Wars movies and the Ewoks + Droids ones, so they are excluded from my rating.

It depends on how much has already been spoiled for you and how much you like Star Wars. The main spoiler being the one from Star Wars: Episode V โ€“ The Empire Strikes Back, the one almost everyone knows. And knowing which character Hayden Christensen plays in the prequels. If you don't know the answer to either of those questions than the machete order is ideal for first viewing, though I would include the first episode which really isn't as bad as many say. Regardless, the majority of fans suggests starting with the original trilogy to which I agree. The reason for watching the original movies first is because it hinges on the viewer not knowing certain things, if you watch the prequels first you'll be spoiled a lot of information for the original movies which would lessen the experience. My ideal order for first viewing for a big fan would be:

  • Andor (TV Show which is a prequel to Rogue One)
  • Rogue One (Movie which is a direct prequel to Episode IV, the movie literally ends where the original Star Wars movie begins)
  • Star Wars: Episode IV โ€“ A New Hope
  • Star Wars: Episode V โ€“ The Empire Strikes Back
  • Star Wars: Episode VI โ€“ Return of the Jedi
  • Star Wars: Episode I โ€“ The Phantom Menace
  • Star Wars: Episode II โ€“ Attack of the Clones
  • Star Wars: Episode III โ€“ Revenge of the Sith
  • Obi-Wan Kenobi (TV Show which acts as a bridge between Episode III and Episode IV)
  • The Mandalorian (TV Show)
  • The Book of Boba Fett (TV Show which refers to the end of season 2 of the Mandalorian)

Optional:

Star Wars Episodes VII to IX, they're not great and barely act as a consistent trilogy. But they're ok to watch once.

Would not recommend:

Solo: A Star Wars Story, this is probably the worst movie of them all. It's about the earlier years of Han Solo, which should have been great but isn't.

I almost haven't seen any of the animation so I can't comment on those. I have seen some Clone Wars episodes but what I saw was more focused towards young children.

I like this order, assuming we're skipping over the animated series (Clone Wars, Bad Batch, Rebels in chrono order).

Those two things have been spoiled for me unfortunately. Other then that I don't have a lot of spoilers but I'm guessing those are the two biggest twists! Thank you for the list!

Yeah, the first one was already spoiled to me before the age of 13 (when I first saw the theatrically re-released special editions) by the Simpsons, thanks Homer! But if you already know that then you can safely ignore the machete order. Andor/Rogue One are a bit more serious so if you don't like that you could skip those. The Book of Boba Fett is a good show to watch directly after the Mandalorian though since it directly references the ending of the 2nd season. Though it's nowhere as good as the Mandalorian.

Having watched the movies since childhood, but being behind on the shows, at one point I was trying to catch up chronologically to make it easier to follow along with the plot. However, if you're starting by just watching the movies, machete also works from a narrative perspective.

Full disclosure, I prefer Episode I over Episode II, so I would include that in the watch order.

Having already seen all the movies (Solo is terrible, btw), I'm going to try out that Machete order soon, then jump back to do the rest in chronological order.

It's hard to go wrong with release order, and if you haven't seen any of them as an actual child, you probably aren't as burdened by the "everything SUX but the originalzzzz" problem. Jar Jar is really no dumber than teddy bears in space. HOWEVER, Anakin casting is not great, so if you find yourself getting angry or bored by episodes I, II, and/or III, just skip them. You won't be missing much of the story unless you must, must know how the Emperor got into politics.

Episode VII is basically a thematic remake of IV, but a pretty good one.

Episode V is clearly, to me, the Best of them all, but my childhood is weighing in heavily on that.

Rogue One is a pretty good movie with a completely different tone than the numbered episodes.

I guess this is my long-winded version of recommending IV, V, VI, VII and anything else you like & don't want to FF through.

Please let us know how you feel about all the Star Wars stuff once you wade deeper into it.

I would always see them in release order, as it was the intended way for them to be seen and kinda feels like the proper way to experience the story, as it seems more mysterious in the original trilogy.

The franchise has some very solid books. Everyone will mention the Zahn trilogy. After the original three theatrical films, the Zahn trilogy was the only canonically OK'd by George Lucas sequel to those films for a very long time. (We'll not talk about the Ewoks movies...)

Later, many other novels came out (I read quite a few of the X-Wing series).

Then the prequel trilogy films came out.

Then Disney bought Lucasfilm. Then anything that was canon was essentially overturned. And then the sequel trilogy films were released and had nothing to do with the Zahn books, to the disappointment of many.

However... they may still be canon, given some things happening in the current TV shows.

Point is, if you do decide to watch the original trilogy first, then the Zahn books could be a good next stop. If you go chronological or some mix, then they may be very okay to pick up some other time instead.

Three not very popolar tips:

  • Do not see Rogue One as a prequel, the prequel for episode IV is Playing the first chapter of Star Wars Dark Forces
  • Also Star Wars Force Unleashed has to be played after episode 3
  • And Star wars Jedi Falllen Order at the same time than watching Obi Wan

If you are peaky about effects, start seeing by Release Order, then you know the lastest movies will have more and better FXs.
If you want to know whats going on... see by Chrono Order. For me this one is better, you will catch some details of the story that in other way you will lose.
And the story is very simple anyway, if you already saw Mandolarian, you are totaly spoiled about the story. But its good to know what happend before all of that.

I don't think you should watch them in either release or chronological order, instead I think, if you're intending to get the full story and avoid as many unnecessary spoilers as possible the ideal viewing order is:

4-5-2-3-6-7-8-9
And if you want to watch the spinoff movies as well the order would be

4-Rogue one-5-2-3-Solo-6-7-8-9

Episode 1 is intentionally left out of the viewing order for a couple of reasons:
1: It's frigging atrocious
2: It adds very little to the story, and what little is of importance gets brought up again in episode 2 & 3
3: A fare bit of stuff gets retconned from it, which makes it more confusing than necessary. It also overexplains a lot has too many convenient coincidences that just... well, it retroactively makes the other movies worse by making the universe feel very small.

If you really really want to see it, I would save it for last. There's just a single thing in Solo that relies on having seen Episode 1, and even so it actually is to the determent of Solo to know what they're referring to.

The reason why I would not recommend chronological order or release order is because it spoils things that could otherwise be interesting surprises or revelations. Though if you find the acting in Episode 2 painful (it is!) you can skip the prequels altogether without it really impacting much at all. .

You still get a controlled dose of Jar Jar in Episode 2. Might be best for someone with no Jar Jar experience to start with a low dose.

Your points are valid and would probably lead to a much better viewing experience, but I'm now commited to tackling every single movie in the franchise. When I'm sitting there watching episode 1 and regretting my actions, I'll remember you and all the people that tried to warn me against the bad movies lmao

Do at least wait with watching the prequel trilogy until you've seen Episode 4 & 5. That way you won't have some of the plot twists spoiled for you.

Also, Episode 1 makes a lot more sense if you keep in mind that a big part of the reason why George Lucas earned so much money from the original Trilogy was because he managed to keep the toy rights to the movies, something that at the time was considered a pretty minor thing for even movies aimed at children. It explains a lot of the decisions made with that movie.

Episode 4 and 5 are part of the original trilogy right? Is so then no worries, I plan on watching the original trilogy than move on to the prequels.i probably know some big spoilers though since they are older movies. Also that does make sense with the toys because I've heard there are more characters aimed at children later in the series
