Not sure what category to post in, so putting in off topic.
I have 10 foil steam trading cards now. A new one I got/noticed, the price is odd.
The only ones for sale start at $10.65 and go up. The only buy offers are $0.21 and lower. Doesn't seem like any sales history. The graph/card even set to lifetime shows may to november only and doesn't specify a year. I also looked at it on steamcardexchange website, but can't find history there either.

Smart Factory Tycoon Foil Trading Card - Foundry (Foil)
Steam > Smart Factory Tycoon Community Items > Foundry (Foil)

I don't think I'm allowed to post links here, even to steam market, but I could be wrong.
My question is, what should I try to sell it for? I know some foils can be high, like another foil from same game is over $200, but like this one, is that just the cheapest available price without ever selling near that?

My next best for price is only $1.06 then next is $0.41, the others all under $0.26

Yeah, I was thinking of listing it for 4-5, still less than half anything else available. I'm not selling now for $0.21 just because it's the best offer, lol. I'm never going to try to make a foil badge, and don't care about game enough to want to keep it. Most I've sold anything for was $0.14 according to my market history.

I had almost exactly the same situation recently. Only available card was listed at $10+, with no sales history. I put mine up at $5 just to see what would happen, and it sold in less than a week.

I would list it for it as high as you feel comfortable with. You can always take it down and relist it a lower price if it turns out to be too high.

Also, just a heads up that Steam might flag it as an "usual sale price" if you do sell it, since there's no sales history. Not a big deal - they'll send you a message letting you know they're going to hold the money for a few days to confirm there's nothing suspicious going on (hacked account, etc). Threw me off for a moment when it happened to me, so I just thought I'd share.

I'd have to wait 15 days to be able to relist it. Good to know about that last part.

I sold one for almost €7 once. There was a buy request for it at that price, so I was like... "ooh, they can have it."
Some people are indeed crazy.

People will put buy orders for cheap seeing if anyone wants to instasell. Looking at buy/sell isn't the best guide, just put it for what you want from it.

The reason for the huge difference in price for foils is really supply and demand.

Smart Factory Tycoon started dropping cards in about March/April 2022. Of course since foils are rare it takes a while for them to appear and since this game isn't exactly popular some foils can take years to drop.

Only 5 Foundry Foils have been sold on Steam Market. The first sold for about $3 AUD shortly after they started to drop and then took a whole year before it sold another for less then 60c AUD. The last one sold in November 2023 for just 35c AUD. Since 5 of the 6 sales have sold for less then 90c AUD, the $1 pricetag Vahid suggested is probably accurate.

Those crazy prices are just people hoping someone is stupid enough to really, REALLY want it.

All exactly what I saw/thought, thanks for confirming. I just didn't know the year it was referencing. So I could be the first person to get one, and notice the demand, in months.

Thanks to obscure visual novels I sold one foil last year for €10 that sold pretty quickly, then a few weeks ago I sold one for €9 that I had to re-list a few times to sell. I just looked at the most expensive one currently on the market, put it up for a couple euro lower, if it didn't sell for a month or so then re-list it for lower than that.

No way, I just got one today and I got one on the 2023 winter sale. I have gotten at least 6 or 7 in the past 2 years alone.

I thought I had one from 2023 summer sale, but don't seem to, and it's not in my market history. I'm not sure how some people get so many cards. I mean I have a lot, but considering you only get an amount equal to 1/2 the cards for badge, and dupes happen. There was a game I got all 4 cards were the same from an 8 card set, another game was I think 14 or 15 in set, and I got 5 of the same out of the 7 or 8 drops.

I once sold a foil card for nearly $30. If it's rare enough, the badge hunters will eventually cough up the money.

I've bought plenty of cards, but nothing over about 20 cents. And most are 3-4 cents. That's to complete difficult collections for which I don't have good trades elsewhere. And by leveling up quite a bit, you get better odds for new drops, so as long as you don't overspend, it'll eventually pay out in terms of new cards you'll obtain for free.

I've badged a couple of foil sets, but only when I somehow got at least 2 in the same set just from drops. But I sell 95% of my foil cards. You don't get more points for badging the foil sets, so I'd rather have the money to convert to spending on regular cards, which has greater impact on level since I can usually get 3-10 regular cards for what I sell a single foil card.

Out of curiosity, how expensive was the retail price of the base game that you got the card for? Would be ridiculous if it was below $30.

I'm trying to remember which game it was...this was about 3-4 years ago. I remember seeing that the card was rare and that it had sold for a lot in the past. So I just looked at the lowest posted price, and then made mine cheaper by about 50 cents. It took about 5-6 months, but then it sold. I couldn't believe it.

It wasn't for a huge AAA game, though, if I remember correctly. I think something like an indie game with a budget (so probably in the $20-$30 range). The price of the base game doesn't seem to matter much...to collectors, it's all about the rarity of the cards and the badge.

You could say the game paid for itself, you actually made a profit even if you bought the game for cheaper.

You should see my process for buying games on the xbox market... 😁

I don't own any console besides a Playstation and I haven't bought games for it in a while since they are so expensive, last one I bought was Rocksmith 2014 Remastered since the game was like 30€ on Steam and I could get the game + the cable needed to play the game for just 50€. Rocksmith got delisted from Steam like 9 months after that so it's my only way to play the game.

I think the best investment was getting a South Park game that came with another copy of another South Park game for the Playstation, the game itself was on sale at just 5€ and my brother played the heck out of those 2 games. Probably the funniest RPG games I've ever played myself.

I always check the games in thrift stores to just maybe find like a CD-ROM or (very unlikely) a Playstation game. Ever since I found out about game keys and bundles I have saved so much money and not bought games at full price for a long time.

On PC, bundles are by far the best bargain, but I always shop the Steam sales, too.

On consoles, there are other ways to work the system. I switched to Xbox after PS/2 because the multimedia features were so much better. I use them as the primary device on our TVs because they're easy to update and not too expensive to upgrade. Buy a great TV and you don't have to care about the smart features so much if you drive everything on the Xbox. :)

So, I am super religious about my Microsoft Awards account. I check it daily. There are always 3 little activities that take about 1-3 minutes to do daily that get you points. There are also always a few other things (usually just clicking on a topic, but sometimes another quiz or something) and you can do these for additional points. Keeping up a streak with your daily activities gets you streak bonuses. And then the Xbox reward stuff (used to be more challenging, but super easy to do these days) actually ties into the same program. It has its own streak bonuses too. Also, searching on bing (as opposed to google, which is fine by me because I like bing better anyway) will get you more points (up to 60 bing searches per day count -- I have a script to ensure that I maximize this :) ).

That all goes into an account. You can use the points for all sort of stuff, but the best dollar value per point ratio is to trade these in for xbox/Microsoft points. So I buy xbox gift cards for my own account when they're on sale. And then I never buy games at full price...I wait until they're on sale, usually at least 50%, but I shop the 70%-90% sales hard.

So I'm converting points that I got for free into real dollar credits that I use to buy games at significant discount. I probably get roughly $80 worth of games for about $10-$20 on a regular basis, and those $10-$20 were free for me because I just converted points to earn them.

Takes me 2-5 minutes per day, and I've probably purchased almost $1000 worth of free games that way on Xbox.

I don't have nearly enough dedication for this. That's insane it's possible to get stuff this way.

Lol, I know, it seems like a lot. But I seriously do my daily stuff basically while I have my coffee in the morning. Helps me wake up. And then I might do the xbox tasks in the evening, but they're largely tied to searches and stuff, and since I already did those on the PC in the morning, it takes like 20 seconds to acknowledge this on the xbox and POOF! You have your points. :) [Also, Game Pass will get you a few more points just by playing games and earning achievements]

I literally turned in points for $25 last night. Didn't even fully drain the $25 (there's about a buck left), and I bought:

  • Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number
  • Observation
  • The Longest Road On Earth
  • The Mosaic 1% Edition
  • Night Call
  • Gato Roboto

These games at full price would be $100. I got them for $24 (after tax, so really like $22), but that $24 didn't cost me any actual cash out of my pocket.

I'm quite conflicted about doing that. πŸ˜† I kind of like top-down shooters (I liked Police Stories), but I don't love them either, and I'm not sure I'd like Hotline Miami's graphics on the long run...

I personally don't like top-down games all that much but Hotline Miami 2 was good, it's a bit hard and actually has a lot of thinking involved. I mainly still got it because of the Payday 2 character and heist, nothing else.

What are you conflicted about? Just not sure it's worth the time investment? There's 0% of anything shady there, and it's not like you have to go subscribe to stuff on Twitter/X or FB or Youtube like everyone does for some of the freebie crap game GAs. πŸ˜†

This is literally just participating in an on-the-up-and-up program sponsored by Microsoft, and then taking advantage of that point system in the most efficient way possible. You can get target cards and stuff, too, but the points-per-dollar ratio doesn't work out as well. Best value is to use the dollars for MS stuff, which makes sense, because that's in their best interest too. Everyone kind of wins.

The world is full of systems. IMO, it's important to understand how to take advantage of them without abusing them or becoming a shady-ass criminal. This is a great example of simply participating consistently and getting a good return for the effort.

brother! this is about the only rewards program i've stuck with over the years. easily making enough points to have game pass whenever i want it is awesome, or buying an amazon gift card to save some money on there. i hate the recent changes they made with searching though.

Yeah, what's up with that? All of the searches want to pre-filter things by gamepass discounted games or a specific developer's discounted games or whatever. I want just a store page with everything where I can apply whatever filters I want and can sort by whatever's most important to me.

When I was crusinging through and figuring out what I wanted to do with my $25, I literally did like three separate searches, opened a bunch of tabs in a new window, and then parsed through them to narrow things down to what I wanted on my little shopping list. Ridiculous.

But hey, it's still a pretty good point program that has real world results, so I hang in there even when there's functional or UI stuff that makes me a little crazy.

some items have manipulated prices on steam market, you will see this more often on normal badges where a group will flood the market will all the other cards they will get except 1, and they hold on to those cards as price increases, then sell them for profit

Comment has been collapsed.

Interesting, makes sense, just never thought about that. I mean, how many games are there they can grind for cards if they even after price jacking are like 25-50 cents.
It's hard enough to get 1 full set, yet alone that many. My highest badge by far is summer sale 2023, I got it up to 9, but that's not a game. Besides that, 4 games at badge level 2, all other game badges level 1

The first foil I can remember getting was: Garry's Mod Foil Trading Card - Spammer (Foil)
Surprisingly, still worth 170 gems to scrap, or 12 cents. I have one foil that only scraps for 40 gems, but market is 37 cents but another foil for another game also scraps for 40 and market is 12 cents. The worst foil I have is 30 gems or 9 cents.
My 2nd most expensive, $1.07 but only scraps for 20 gems

I really don't understand how scrap for gems value is figured out, doesn't seem tied to market..
