How has no one mentioned baccano yet?!?!? Watch baccano as soon as possible, it's a fcking masterpiece, then watch higurashi and then watch kara no kyoukai (all of the movies) these 3 anime are fcking GENIUS

Ghost in the Shell (not having seen that and calling yourself an anime fan makes you a criminal)

Elfen Lied (drama, fantasy, modern)

Katanagatari (fantasy, some action but based on originality and dialogues)

Puella Magi Madoka Magica (fantasy, magic girls but don't be deceived by that...)

Denshi Kokousei no Nichijou (comedy, modern)

Seitokai no Ichizon (comedy, to watch especially if you've watched a lot of other anime)

Time of Eve (movie, sci-fi, and quite deep too)

And currently playing is Psycho-PASS: it's quite decent and quite a surprise.
