You can join the beta here.

Not having to automatically update and being able to rollback to the previous version are great features that Steam should also have.

Got the alpha, installed Lionheart and the game flickers between the Galaxy window and the ingame FMV and on every screen change. Can't update to the beta and the feature list is very limited right now. I'm not very impressed so far, but I keep looking forward to the next version(s).
