Dear SteamGifts Guys/Girls,

I know this isn't the right place. But, instead of making a new thread I thought I would modify my thread about web-hosts.

So, what domain should I choose since .com was taken? .NET or .ORG?

All of my friends on steam came out to be a even 50/50.. so they were no help. So, imma leave it up to you all :D

Oh, and I choosed DreamHost. anyone know anything about them?

Go Daddy is a terrible company run by terrible people.

Do you remember that Sopa/Pipa kerfuffle a while back? Did you know that Go Daddy was specifically excluded from all other hosts (the company, not the people who host there)? Did you know that that's because they helped write Sopa?

Don't let their marketing fool you. They're truly the worst people on the Internet, in more ways than one.

The domain providers typically don't have great hosting. I would go with HostGator in this case.

There are a number of alright hosts around that price range. Dreamhost is actually alright for a year. Try this deal.. You can hit up the deals during Thanksgiving week, after that. Host Gator goes much cheaper during that time.

Never used Dreamhost.

Do you have any reviews or anything I can look at about them?

Thanks AllRoCol :D

They are one of the big ones that are nothing special. Kind of cookie cutter type approach. Everything is the same. Surprisingly they work a bit better than most of the alternatives at that price range. They don't really limit things all that much, like the php memory or timeouts. So a new person or one with limited knowledge would probably have an easier time starting there. They have a lot of money, so they don't care as much if you want to use resources. Some of the other places are quite limiting, even at much higher prices.

I've gone up and down the hosting food chain over the years, with places like Media Temple, Vps.net, LiquidWeb, HostGator, Netfirms, Dreamhost, BlueHost, and others. I can say that without a doubt, for the first year price, Dreamhost is worth it. Maybe not in the past, but they have come a long ways. I wouldn't stay there past the first year, but I would use them for a year just to get the site up and running. It is easy enough to move later one, when better deals are around. They have some great deals around Thanksgiving. Some for Black Friday, some for Cyber Monday, and so on. I would go with a really cheap option now, then shop again in November.

Both are pretty good and well known, but HostGator would take the cake. They have much better support, up time, transfers, and overall better running. As for the domain name itself, I would recommend "Name.com".

For HostGator, try these coupons for 2013:

995OFF2DAY

This coupon saves you $9.95 on any hosting plan for April.

1CENTWORKS

With this coupon you get your hosting for one cent on the baby/hatchling plans.

25OFF4U2DAY

This Hostgator promo code slashes 25% of any hosting plan. Best used when purchasing hosting for a period of 6 months or more as this will increase your savings considerably.

That's great! If you have any issues that needs immediate remedy you could walk to their HQ straight away :D
I've had so many bad memories trying to get in contact with my past host(Frantech) over issues both technical and not that I just gave up on them and changed hosts after some time.

As for your next question: .NET or .ORG

It's best to get a .COM, short and easy to remember, not mis-spell, and something more brandable rather than just keywords. Be careful, if it's already taken, as your got strong completion which will probably over-run you... Google hates leechers of traffic.

Next best would be .NET, as .ORG is meant for non-profit organisations.

TPB.org is a bit ironic, even if they changed that - but it used to be .org!

Honestly, I would pick a different domain. People tend to only look for .Coms. It is a lot harder to use .Net or .Org. At least for me, there has always been this unnatural feeling about using them. It glitches me a bit. If I had to pick, I would say .Net, but at that point, pretty much picking any top level domain would be about the same. Wiki List

As for Dreamhost. They are pretty much the biggest entry level site host. They are great for starting out, then you advance elsewhere when the year deal is up or fake another account. I wouldn't stay there forever, but you can't really find a better deal to start with. Like I said before, wait for the November deals, then you can advance up. There is actually nothing wrong with Dreamhost right now. The customer service is good, the features are as well, and you shouldn't have any problems with a small site. The price is very much right. You can't get cheaper without problems and the features of even a little more expensive are unnecessary for your needs.

Depends on what the website is. If you are trying to sell a product, you do want to try and go with a .com and .net as a second choice. If the page is more to do something like display work and not sell anything, then either is fine, but .net is likely better.

Also, make sure to check what the site with the .com version of your name is about. People will usually type .com by habit and if you are doing a business and the .com version could be a competitor, that could be a huge problem for you.

They may also own rights to the name (copyright / trademark and whatnot), so you may want to clear things out between them before you actually purchase the domain name.

.net is more appropriate I think.

.org is traditionally for an organisation / group's website. If that's what you want to do, go with .org

Otherwise, for the sake of traditionality, go with .net as it's not .org

I've had a good few years with JustHost.com after a couple really shit hosts. As for TLD, I'm not sure why you'd want a .org unless you're an organization. Maybe that's an antiquated notion. /shrug.

as for providers, I recommend ixwebhosting or myhosting. I've used both and been very satisfied.

Well since you didn't say anything about what's going to be on your site, I'm going to make assumptions and say that .net is most likely to be the best reflection of what you're site is

Go for .net if it's a personal website.

Don't know anything about Dreamhost. I've been using a company called XILO for a while and they've been consistent and affordable throughout.

WHAT IS YOUR DOMAIN FOR?

Different extensions have different meanings. It's not just fluff, it has a purpose.

As for Dreamhost, my brother has been using them for his business for years and years and loves them. On the rare occasions that they mess up, they always own up to it. They don't try to hide their mistakes. I used to host on Hostgator myself, and it was the opposite. I would not recommend Hostgator, based on personal experience.
