Do you buy gaming keyboards, headsets or gaming mice?

if yes,

what brands

how long do they usually last for you

how much did you spend on them

if not,

why not?

EDIT: I am currently using a Roccat Isku Illuminated Keyboard and a Razer Taipan (8200 dpi --> mostly plat at 3500-5600 though)

I don't, because they're usually horrendously overpriced.

what do you consider too much for let's say a keyboard?

Anything over ~£25. I am pretty cheap mind.

I don't either. As DackXYZ mentioned, they tend to be quite a bit more expensive than "regular" ones, and I really don't feel a need for it, the difference isn't that huge if you're not into competitive gaming and going to LANs or other tournaments.
I might get some budget gaming headphones though, when I get my desktop PC back, as a reward for making my £8ish headphones last nearly 3 years.

same question, what do you consider too much?

as for headsets, there are some pretty good ones that aren't too expensive I think.
how much would you pay for that?

Not everyone has the same amount of money to spare. Being a student I can't earn as much either, and I don't see a point in saving for something literally 10 times more expensive than what I already have, which works just fine.

You are right, there are some good, budget headsets. Also, the difference between using a £5 headset from some convenience store and using a £20-30 gaming headset is extremely significant. If I were to buy a gaming headset I'd probably spend £25-35. I've seen some good ones in that price range, anything below that can't really be expected to be good quality and anything above that I consider somewhat useless. I'm sure 5.1 surround sound will blow my mind after using stereo most of the time, there's no need for 7.1

5.1 is more then enough IMO
I also would suggest for a decent cable
bought a few headsets which broke due to a low quality cable.

Hmm, never had any problems with cables, even in cheap headsets. Mine would usually break because they were meant to be used for voice communication, not blasting music at 100% volume, so their sound became messed up after a while. No such problem with the ones I have now.

My headsets mostly fail ecause the mic won't work anymore.
I am very dissapointed in my steelseries headset (€35)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Ah, the plastic bit which holds mic onto the headphones broke off, for me. However, the cable wasn't damaged so it still works the same, I just had to use some selotape to hold it in place. This is my headset, to give you an idea. The background noise cancelling bit on the mic is also long gone, but afaik the mic became better quality when I got rid of it.

What's the difference between USB and audio jack headsets anyway? I remember seeing some cheap £20 steelseries headsets. 3H VR or something of that sort, and the USB version was £15-20 more expensive, while specs didn't seem different.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I have the 3H but with the jacks
don't know what there's different or why they are different in price.
I think the fact about this headset is that the mic is able to be retracted and that has a crappy quality cable...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, I saw the part about mic being retractable on Amazon. I personally don't see that as an advantage. I rather have one that can be pushed up so it's out of the way, but can be quickly pushed back if needed.

I use gamepads, and I do own both a flight stick and steering wheel that work on PC, but I use a standard keyboard and mouse.

Then again, I rarely use a KB/M when gaming anyway.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

so you mostly play flight sims and driving sims?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Nope. I don't actually have any flight sims installed (I suck arse at them) and only a handful of racing games. I mostly play FPS games lately, with the occasional title in other genre.

Yes, I'm using a gamepad for FPS games. I don't care if I can have a pixel perfect aim with a mouse, when I find a keyboard itself awful to use when gaming. My aim is fine with a gamepad, and I have no problems doing everything else, so I'll stick with the pad.

Sorry if it feels like I want to start an argument, but I know if I didn't say this, people with other opinions will, and I'm going to bed so this gives my opinion on it before I leave.

I never used a gamepad before so I wouldn't know...

I got it free, same with the steering wheel. And even if I don't use it now, no reason I might decide to try and improve in the future. I might not be good with what I have, but I still own a few for when I feel like trying.

pretty decent life for a mouse.
notice any wear or tear?
buttons that don't respond anymore sometimes?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Decent life? 2 years is not much, unless someone is playing on high brackets in ultra competetive twitch based games - but high bracket users that wear everyting very fast will always be in miniority.

For normal gamer / PC user usage I personally expect at least 3-4 years live from my peripherals. In example if products of certain company would start malfunctioning earlier then I would not be satisfied and it would affect my future purcharses from this company negatively.

Not really, there is a button that doesn't respond sometimes. Its to switch between "profiles" so you can adjust your mouse settings quickly, pretty useless.

I have Logitech G400 mouse ($35) and SteelSeries QcK mousepad ($10) and it makes a significant difference in FPS games. That's only gaming peripherals that I have because I don't find gaming keyboard and headset a necessity.

I have a Razer Naga and a Logitech G19 Keyboard because of all the extras these 2 products have. They're expensive but for me it's worth it. But I wouldn't buy gaming gear if they have no useful "extras" like some of the headsets and keyboards.

most people think razer gear is crappy quality.
I still have a functional Taipan after aprox 5-6 months.

I've owned a Razer mouse, keyboard and headset. The mouse and headset didn't even last a year. The keyboard has held up a bit better, nearly 3 years, but the backlighting on the keys goes out sometimes. I personally won't buy anything from Razer again, from my own experience and many others saying how poor the quality is, it's just not worth it.

I've got the Naga now for about... 1,5 years? and its still in perfect condition. Before that, I had a Razer Copperhead for about 2 years. Even the Copperhead is in good condition. So yeah... I've got no problems with Razer gear.

I'm currently using:

Mouse -Steelseries Warcraft Cataclysm mouse. 15 buttons and it's really large, so for people like me with big hands it's nice. Had it probably 2 years and it still works like new

Keyboard - Razer Lycosa. Had it for a few years, and is holding up okay. Nothing fancy other than the backlighting. Not sure how much it costs now, but I probably payed way too much for it, for the limited features.

Headset - Corsair Vengeance 1500. The nicest headset I've ever owned. Really great sound and mic quality, pretty comfortable. Only purchased it about a month ago.

I use this mouse. It's better than any "regular" mouse I ever had. It's feels good to use, it's more precise (tested with both mice connected at the same time), has enough buttons and configurations for any use.

I have an illuminated (but not "gaming") keyboard. I only needed the light. The regular buttons are also great for lots of games, where I prefere the possibility of sliding from a button to the next one, rather than lifting the finger.

I usually use my external speakers, but when I need a mic I have a pair of earphones with mic. No headphones, I find them annoying to carry on my head.

I tend to follow the logic of - The simpler, the better. Can't imagine who would be stupid enough to buy a 70 dollar/euro mouse with silly bells and whistles that functions the same or worse as a 20 dollar/euro one.

Headsets are useless to me, I'm playing on speakers (some Logitech 2.1 set). Mice: Logitech g9x. Keyboard: default one from laptop. Additionally I'm using Xbox controller. I'm not Logitech fanboy or something, they just create stuff that suits my needs and have nice quality. Also I prefer to spend a little bit more to get stuff that won't break after using it for few months.

My skills at playing are not that great so I don't think the peripherals are the limit. No point investing in more expensive stuff for me.

But I do use a MS gamepad for FPSs, because it changes the game experience and it saves the poor keys of my laptop some hard hit. Hopefully that'll help it live longer:)

I have been using a Logitech G500 mouse for the last 2 years, planning to get a Logitech G19 keyboard at some point (so pricey) to replace my 10 years old Microsoft Internet Keyboard Pro.

I also have a Logitech F510 gamepad since Christmas. Had been using a Thrustmaster Dual Trigger 3-in-1 Rumble Force for a few years but no Xinput support can be a pain sometimes.) I've also got a Thrustmaster T.Flight Stick X on my birthday last week, and plan to finally play some of my flight sims that are simply a pain to play without a decent stick. (Didn't have one since the days of Vista when my Microsoft Force Feedback Pro stopped being supported)

Recently bought a Genius Maurus GX mouse and love it.
Still using the keyboard that game with the PC... but once that breaks, I might get a gaming keyboard as well.

I avoid the 'awesome must have for gaming' expensive stuff with lots of bells and whistles, but I do like the mid-range priced once, as they feel a lot sturdier and more responsive, and don't break the bank for useless lights.
