So, to celebrate getting over being horribly sick the last few days and to do the right thing with the extra copy of a two-pack I won, here's a puzzle giveaway. It's for The Ship and ends in roughly 48 hours. The answer will go on the standard http://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/xxxxx and it's really less of a puzzle then a bunch of questions. If the question doesn't make much sense, I appologize and I'll try to clarify. It's a lot harder coming up with these then I'd hoped.

  1. (42+23*(6/3)-24+(11*(-2)))/6=?
  2. 01101011
  3. The first letter of a name of one of the heroes in the upcoming Avengers movie. Hint: You won't like him when he's angry. (uppercase)
  4. What does the World Wide Web and World War 2 have in common?
  5. In math, this letter acts like the law when dealing with functions. It always locks up (x) then stands next to it to gloat.

"In math, this letter acts like the law when dealing with functions. It always locks up (x) then stands next to it to gloat."

... what. the. hell. I'm pretty good with maths, but I don't even have the slightest clue what that meant.

I just got it. Don't think of it as a letter, and more of a word. Think about how math works and how it's applied.

Consider what a function is, or more accurately how you would go about writing a function down. That might make it a bit easier.

Yep, got it. Thanks for jogging my memory. In my school, we only very rarely wrote it like that, so that's why I was having difficulty! Thank you very much!

Solved the puzzle, not interested in the game, but thanks anyway!

Some of the answers were a bit obscure (particularly 2), but I got there in the end!

Thanks for the entertainment and the giveaway!

I actually figured 2 would be the easiest.

It's possible that the issue is capitilization for a certain letter, or you may have one of the answers wrong. It's hard to tell.

Keep in mind the order of operations when doing math problems.

Just saying, #1 is not written following "proper" math rules. If you wanted less ambiguity, you should use * instead of 'x', and add more parentheses around negative numbers to differentiate the negative from a subtraction sign.

... there's ambiguity? It's obvious it's not an algebra question, therefore the x can stay as is, and if that can, then the - can stay as is too.

I wasn't sure which symbol was used for multiplication online. It was a simple dot, so I suppose an astrisk would work alright. Still, I do think the x is clear enough.

As for the parentheses around negitive numbers issue, I do understand where your coming from. It's been a long time since my last math course, and that's likely the way it's normally done. But I don't think it's anything that would confuse most people since I never used x to mean an unspecified value. So I would say it is clear, even if technically not written correctly.

Still, might as well edit it. Doesn't hurt anything and takes about ten seconds.

EDIT: As it turns out, using astrisks won't work. Anything between two astrisks becomes italicized, so they'll have to stay x symbols.

Thats cause its markdown. Do \ and you will be fine like this \.

There's something wrong with the last question. No letter on the keyboard, upper or lower case, works. I really doubt I got any of the others wrong, either, unless I don't see what WWII and the WWW have in common.

Ah, capitals. Also, I'm SURE that letter didn't work a second ago.
