A lot devs don't think on the fact how greedy people are and that 95% of the people that took a Alpha or Beta Key don't start the game anyway and only hope that it will change to a full key/game, that brings +1 and maybe cards, later.

And that don't count only for crap games, it is the same with real indie gems that are much more worth as only one look.

Comment has been collapsed.

That sucks for them though because they were trying to get the word out about their game by giving keys away for free and now they'll probably be sold on the grey market or traded and nothing for the devs.

People suck. Bots suck even more.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

And the people that are bot owners suck as most :-D

Yes, CrownTrick was a good example for that.
Nice guys, nice game, alpha Keys were complete used a few minutes after the devs filled the bot, again and again and again.
I, and for sure not only i alone, brought them to the point to look a bit closer before giving keys out and what happens with them afterwards.
They embedded then a "you must be X minutes at the server/your discord account must be X days/weeks old" security and look if people really try the Alpha Version of the Game AND give a feedback about it. If not they don't get Beta Keys when they create them later.
I think such stuff is the right thing to get attention + responses that helps to develop a game. It can be critic about something or what the people like, both helps (if it name specific stuff).

Yeah it's always a double edged sword because you never know how people actually getting the keys will respond to the game and sooo many people just don't know how to review games objectively (as in "I don't like it" is not the same as "this games sucks") but they do have a better chance of getting a buzz going when the keys go to actual people and not just bots.

Now I'm going to get playing since I got a key from a generous soul and it would be hypocritical of me to just let it sit unplayed when they went to all this trouble.

Also I didn't know there was such a genre as "mafia/werewolf" or that it was a classic so I have to catch up!

There was a mafia/werewolf thing that was played using only text on forums. Wonder if it's a digital version of that kind of thing then.

Ah. I never got involved in it, but people were always trying to rope me in to play. Those games could go on for a month and I never really had the time or dedication. Guessing though, with a digital version, you could play a game in a few hours with all parties present. That could be fun.

It's a shame really that keys were given out this way. Would have been better to hit up the existing mafia/werewolf scene (they do still exist) and have them spread the word imo. As we have seen, there are people just grabbing up and making giveaways on SG. Sadly, many who enter giveaways do so for a +1. It's sad to see with new and interesting games. Would be better if they just gave them directly to people that wanted to play it. =(

Personally, I didn't want a key anyway because I'm on a mac. With games that have been out a while, I can use WINE... but meh. It is something I would play though if they did support it on my OS.

I think so too. I'm really hoping to find a game going this weekend. It's harder for small MP in early access or beta during the week but weekend games happen more often.
I saw the devs saying they'll be allowing for bots to be used on servers. I wouldn't even know where to start and it seems bots would be odd for a game of deduction and deception? but if it helps the game grow...

It's a shame really that keys were given out this way.

Especially since beta keys can't be given on SG so basically those keys are lost now and for an MP game, every player is important.

That's a great idea. I'll shoot the devs a message about that.

Ah damn. Maybe they'll reconsider supporting iOS if they want a larger user base. It still feels like an early version of the game.

Perhaps you should consider blacklisting me, too, then?
I grabbed an extra key for you. Would it have been any different if I'd let RNG choose someone to receive that key?

Think about it for a moment -- free keys are allowed to be given away here on SG, and the user won't get any CV for it. Perhaps the entrants would actually like to win the game but weren't able to get a key for themselves. It's not like the user is selling them on the grey market or trading them for something better. He's giving them away, same as I gave one to you.

Well I would be very hypocritical since I was the recipient of your generosity but that's very different from people who constantly make GAs by 4 or more copies of freebies. They do it because they hope they'll get CV for it. I don't blacklist people who make GAs with freebies.
Actually more often than not, I whitelist people who make no CV GAs because they're not getting anything from them and a lot of games are not being given away anymore because they went on the no CV list.

But there are users who give nothing but free games, when they are free, hoping to game the system. One copy is totally acceptable. 3, 5 or 10 copies... that's someone trying to get CV for nothing and forcing devs to give away more keys.
It honestly depends on the profile and the general pattern of behavior. The user we're talking about here has been doing that many many times.

It wasn't generosity. I got it for nothing. Would it have been different had I taken 4 keys, chosen 4 people in this thread who didn't get a key, and sent them one?

They do it because they hope they'll get CV for it.

Aren't you making an assumption? Granted, there probably are some who do that, but can you make that claim about them all? About this one in particular?

But there are users who give nothing but free games, when they are free, hoping to game the system.

Same response as above.

You've been around here a while. You don't believe there's a particular (unfair, in my opinion) amount of pressure put on users to create giveaways? I see people picked on and bullied all the time for not making giveaways or even for not making enough giveaways or even the right kind of giveaways (some people even going so far as to call them "leeches" and even "extreme leechers"). You don't believe this might have an effect on what's given away and why?

I'm not sure the motive matters here anyway. Perhaps someone who was unable to get a key will get one and enjoy the game. The most the giveaway creator comes out with is someone -- someone like you, in fact -- who was grateful someone else grabbed a key when they couldn't.

And no, I'm not intending to pick on you in particular here ... I am replying to you because I feel you might actually be more open to seeing things from another perspective than others to whom I may have replied.

You're right. There is a certain amount of pressure when it comes to GAs. Not sure why really because it's a free site and people can even pick levels if they want only people making GAs to access their own so yeah.

Still, I don't really like the behavior, on principle. I have, like you, picked an extra key here or there, for a friend, or my girlfriend, especially for multiplayer games. Multiple copies though, I still don't know. You're right, if they're given away to strangers or handed to strangers (like me, after all, it's not as if we really knew each other), there's no difference when the devs are concerned (even though the +1 is real but it's everywhere); but it leaves me uneasy.

In any case, I see the GA in question has been deleted so user if off my BL. Beta keys are not allowed for GAs, which I suspect is the reason, but regardless...

No worries. It's easy to get caught up in a particular mentality when it comes to certain things. I find myself doing it from time to time, though I am making a conscious effort to break the habit and attempt to see things from varying perspectives. That's really all we can do. :)

I found myself wondering how I'd feel on a site like this if I had no money (or very limited money) to make giveaways, and what I might do to try and "fit in" by giving something away. I've been around here a long time, and seen a lot of things, and it's caused me to vastly adjust my perspective into the entire site. Not always for the better, but I'm trying.

In the case of a multiplayer game like this one, what you did was exactly the right thing. You looked in the thread and you saw someone who genuinely wanted to play the game, and you gave them a key. That's helping the game, and I'm sure it is something that the developers would be pretty fine with. Say I was still active on the community that had a mafia section, I would probably grab a key or two to give to them, knowing they would love it. That kind of thing is totally fine in my book.

While I sympathise with what you're saying about people who have no money grabbing a key and giving it away here to fit in and grow their GA pool. I don't agree with them grabbing multiple copies and putting them up for random GAs. Lootbot or Chronogg could provide them with games to do GAs (at least a couple a month) if they took the time to visit every day. Enough to keep them off the venom radar. You know as well as I do that there are countless players who enter GAs for games they don't own, purely for the +1. So... those keys are then lost to the many players who might not have the money to buy a key, but would genuinely LOVE to play. There's two sides to it. =)

As if everyone who got a key in this thread (or anywhere else) is going to play the game, or be any more likely to play the game than someone who consciously enters a giveaway for the game here or anywhere else.

Believe it or not, not all gamers have the SG mentality of "must grab the free games, as many as possible." I have offered free keys for games that were NOT free to me in my discord on more than one occasion and there were no takers. Those guys only accept a key if they actually want it. It's an anime & gaming discord btw, so they do play games. None are members of SG. I feel that in some ways, people get corrupted by the whole giveaway thing here or something. It's kinda nuts.

And yet it was someone on SG for whom I got a key. Someone who hadn't even expressed a desire to actually play the game until after I sent him the key.

Apparently not all gamers on SG have this "SG mentality" of which you speak. ;)

Yes, but a lot of them have. If I offered a key for a decent game (say from Humble Monthly) in a Discord of 20-30 SG people, there is no way someone wouldn't request it from me. It is a very different culture. =)
