Iirc some people said that you can get a Steam copy from your Origin copy.

No, its the other way around. EA game, so your CD Key from the Steam version can be used in their software.

Note that you don't actually have to download or run Origin to register it to your account; it's registered as soon as you hit the button and it prompts you to download.

(Obviously you will have to download and install Origin when you finally want to play it, but you don't have to download it now.)
