It's just one of those weird things in the otaku subculture. I've seen a lot worse. As long as it doesn't involve children in the physical world I have no more problems with it than I have with people unleashing rampages in GTA.

I love anime, but theres some stuff I don't get, hentai being one of them. There's nothing wrong with liking an underage character, just like theres nothing wrong with liking an underage portrayal of a character from a real life actor/actress. The problem starts when you have sexual feelings towards said characters.

For example, I like some of the Nep Nep characters who are underage, but I hold no physical attraction towards them. I liked Hayley Joel's portrayal of his character in the Sixth Sense, but I hold no sexual attraction towards him.

So in short, theres absolutely nothing wrong with liking a child character, but theres a lot wrong with holding sexual feelings towards them. I try and steer clear of games/anime/media which sexualise children. Nep Nep is a tough one because they obviously "transform" into adults.

I'd like to add a further problem arises with the melting pot of nationalities we have, one countries legal definition of a "child" could be different from anothers. Therefore one person's paedophile would be another person's adult in an adult relationship. Personally anyone over 20 is about right for my personal tastes, but legally I can accept anyone above 16 as that's my countries legal definition.

As far as loli and shota goes, I think it's fine in an art form such as in anime. Shouldn't be real people.

I don't know enough about lolicons to make a fair judgement whether they're all pedophiles. But I don't think every pedophile is an awful person, since it not a choice (source), and not all of them act on their urges. I think there's this misguided notion that all pedophiles abuse children, because that's all you see in the media, but in reality you just never hear about those that don't. It's not because I'm attracted to women that I'm a rapist. The acts of rape and child abuse however are some of the worst things you can inflict on another human being and I couldn't condemn it highly enough.

I see no harm in being sexually attracted to anything fictitious, since they aren't hurting anyone, even if I don't comprehend it. I also don't believe that watching sexualized content of loli's will normalize or lead to child abuse since there's no evidence to back up these claims. It's not because I kill people and steal cars in GTA, that I have any desire to do so in real life. A normal brain can distinct between what is fantasy and what is reality.

The conclusion being that it doesn't matter to me what someone is attracted to or thinks about, it only matters how they act upon those feelings and whether they cause others significant harm.

Honestly, as weird as the content matter is... really, if there is no actual victim being made, (IE, drawings and artistic depictions rather than actual children).. it shouldn't matter who's into what. I'd put it right next to furries. Just because someone likes a form of art, a game, a video, etc, doesn't mean they are going out to date Mister Whiskers.

Paedophilia has a very specific definition in psychology and it is not the same thing as child abuse. A lot of child abuse is opportunistic and not perpetrated by paedophiles, who are defined as being exclusively sexually attracted to children. Likewise, many paedophiles do not commit child abuse. No, consuming lolicon doesn't mean you have a sexual attraction to actual children. I know a guy who is attracted to animated characters, including lolis. He's not very interested in human females.

Is a pedophile automatically a bad person? No. A person is bad because they cause harm. A pedophile who never acts upon his sexual interest in children (either with a real child or by consuming media of exploited real children), and never condones, permits, or encourages someone else to act in that fashion, is no more a bad person than anyone else. We've all felt urges that are wrong to act on. Most commonly, many of us here have wanted to physically hurt someone for something they have done, but have refrained.

We cannot and should not regulate thought crime. Our measure of harm does not begin with thought, but with action (including speech).

Of course, thinking things that are harmful to others often can lead to obsessing and the need to act on it.

This thread touches a broad subject. And a very touchy subject at that too. Everyone has strong feelings over these subjects and as strong beliefs that they are right in every way.
My personal view is that each person's sexuality isn't all in black and white spectrum. It is huge spectrum of things that a person likes. And they vary from person to person. Each person is individual after all and grows it's own way on top of it too. Everything isn't sexual either in end, lolicon is one example.

To argue whether someone is bad or not just cause it likes something is same kind of black and white thinking. Everyone is just a human in end. Ofcourse things should have consequences and some rules should be held up. Our current society sadly isn't equal to all though. Many will suffer for even basic personal needs.
However just cause one doesn't understand the interest in some niche fetishes such as bdsm, furries or something else, doesn't mean it is okey to discriminate. Nor is it okey to mark the person as bad. Everyone has something they like that is considered minority.

Won't tap into talking about pedophilia/hebebpholia/etc as talking about such requires open-mindedness to a certain degree and way deeper understanding than I think many in general discussion area can even comprehend. Also SG isn't really known for having civil discussions.
