This is a reboot of a prior thread because the OP is no longer active on SG. The Steam group Linux Users Exclusively is open to those who use Steam exclusively on GNU/Linux. If you would like to join this group, which includes group-only GAs, please leave a comment here and I will forward your request to the group admins.

EDIT: To clarify, I am not a group owner/admin/mod, however, I noted a demand for invite requests and am facilitating such demand here.

Also, SG recently implemented a feature to filter games by OS. This is really useful to those of us who game exclusively on GNU/Linux. Make sure you update from the defaults here

If you still dual boot or use WINE, I encourage you to join some of the other open linux groups out there, such as these two:

Myself and other linux-gifters do GAs for these groups sometimes too.

I think it's kind of funny how there are so many groups/communities based on an operating system, most of which seem to be mostly just there to say "look, I use Linux!" :P

Yes, you should make one to say "look, I use windows"...

I'm not sure if you are complaining or commenting ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There are many groups on Steam, many pointless ones too. Some groups are for self-promotion, some promote nationalism "hey, look what borders I was born between."

There are many linux groups, and I have joined a few to discuss gaming on linux and other linux and technology related topics.

A recent thread was complaining about Microsoft's practices. Some people choose to accept that, others don't. If enough of us don't, Microsoft with either have to change, or accept a market share loss. When linux users band together, we show developers they don't have to develop exclusively for Windows. Is anything going to change? Maybe not, but I don't mind trying :)

The prior thread wasn't being monitored and it looked like there was demand, so I thought I'd fill in that void.

Not a complaint, just something I noticed is that most Linux users tend to like to point out they use Linux a lot. Your profile picture being a proof of that. :P

But no - not a complaint in any way. I don't care/mind at all what others do.

when ppl say "look, I use Linux!" , is a important thing, Is like say to developers "hey, i will not buy your game cuz i not use windows".

I'm interested but I mainly wanna figure how to get more games working with my horrible setup. A pretty crappy computer but it surprisingly runs some of the recent games...but then doesn't run some really old games for some reason. Emulator slows my computer down way too much to game and I tried to partition a bit of my hard drive for windows but its locked for some reason. Just read the rules, why hate on wine? Wine is beautiful.
tl;dr Sounds cool but I use Wine.

Using WINE is still rewarding exclusive Windows development. It will never show developers there is demand for native linux titles.

If you aren't already, I encourage you to join some of the other open linux groups out there, such as these two:

Absolutely right in what you say. So when I buy a game from Steam it must have Linux support. Unfortunately, this is only a few games a year. It's a shame, I know but this is the reality for me in the moment (bundles are just cheaper, but also many older games will hardly ever see Linux support).
Good luck with the group cbones109:)

Thanks! I buy most of my games outside of Steam, but I am different from most users around here. I joined Steam less than 2 years ago but have been using Linux exclusively (at home) for 10+ years. My primary function's needs are met much better with Linux than any other OS. So for me, gaming is a secondary function of my main computer system.

I understand and I'm relatively new to Steam too, and for some time I had only a few games. Then I found this site and subsequently bundles and things got out of control.

I use Linux for many years now, but I'm just a user.:)

I'm not sure what standing I have on this - I exclusively use Linux and have done for years, I don't game with WINE, I don't buy non-Linux games (except to give away), but I do enter gibs for Windows games for a) the hope that there'll be Linux releases in the future, b) cards, and c) to spend points, unless the giveaway creator specifically says only to enter if you really want the game.

If I still fit the criteria, awesome please add me :) if not, thanks for supporting Linux gaming anyway

It all depends on total playtime. While I don't enter for games I don't intend to play, I do card-farm free games. I have then deleted many of those free games.

I have noted your invite request in the appropriate thread.

Thanks :)

The only "non-Linux" game with serious playtime on my account should be 60 Seconds! (Which btw is awesome, and has a Linux beta that's not visible on the Steam store) ;)

It feels like I'm resurrecting an old thread, but I only just found out about LUE - I'd be interested in an invite.

According to http://steam.bravehost.com my stats are:

Linux Windows Unknown
>5hrs Play 98% 0% 2%
Owned 83% 13%* 4%
  • The owned Windows 13% surprised me, until I saw that half of that is for Double Fine Adventure, which is a movie!

I don't dual boot, and haven't done for about 15 years.

thanks for the nice chart! I have posted a link to your profile and one of our mods should be scanning your profile shortly (he has his own script which he is actively improving).

I use Ubuntu all the time because long time ago rolling update killed Windows on 2 laptops for no reason, and I am too lazy to fix it.

I also use Wine occasionally. Can I join?

I posted a link to your profile in the group invite-request thread. You don't have a lot of playtime with many of your games, but I didn't do the math to see where that puts you.

For most of the games I bought but didn't play is that I have played them already, long time ago, just not counted on Steam. :P

I understand, there's just no easy way to tell actual linux users so that is a metric used by the group. This is because if you look at the public We Only Buy Linux Games Group it is filled with Windows users. Some users joined just for access to GAs here so measuring playtime is the best metric the Linux Users Exclusively Group has come up with so far.
