This tends to happen with older games over the years a lot times the company gets sold several times and tracking down who really owns it and has rights after say the publisher loses its right to sell it can be hard to get it re-licensed.That is my only my guess as the only other reason i can come up with is soundtrack issues and cost vs sales is to much but i do not remember Mafia using licensed music but it has been a time since i played it i know it had a lot classical stuff.
Either way while it was a great game for back then and had a damn fine story and decent graphics the game play itself was a mess the driving, controls and such but the rest so made up for that.
Though if they brought it back i would so buy it at asking price and i would sit back and which steam game hoarders cry as the value of said game crashed.

Yeah. It's unfortunate when games disappear over such things. I'd love to get Steam copies of Mafia and Wolfenstein 2009. As far as I've found out Activision still maintains the rights to Wolfenstein and no one really knows why it was removed. The best guess is that since multiplayer has since shut down they decided to remove the game from sale. I've found both for sale, but it'd cost roughly $1,400.00 for the two games...

Well digital is nice but this is one of the downsides as think of the future with no physical games and they get removed they are gone forever or most likely gone forever.
Sometimes games are removed due to issues with newer OS so instead making it work it is far easier to just remove it.Sometimes games are removed from Steam only but can still be purchased on say Amazon as a steam key.
Also Bethesda last i knew owned the rights to Wolfenstien but maybe part of the deal did not include 2009 i know Activision was the publisher before Beth bough the rights.Beth has other Wolf games on Steam just not that one so it leads me to think either the game does not run well on modern system so and due to poor sales decided not to update it or for some reason that was not included in part of the deal.
I still would think being digital on steam you would think putting back up would not really be a big deal if it was removed just for poor sales since Steam gets a cut of every sale so even if it did not sell well it would not cost Beth anything since Steam handles the download and so forth.

None of them will work great on a modern pc unfortunately. I've tried the game on quite a few of mine, the only way to get shadows
working right is to be on an APG video interface. The game also has issues once you move past windows XP.
The best in my fleet to run this game as it was meant to be seen is a 2.8ghtz duel core with 2 gigs of DDR2 800
running XP Home 32 bit with a HIS 4350 512mb AGP card.

I've noticed the shadows are flickering or completely absent. The opening video works sometimes and not others. The sensitivity when looking around is outrageous at the moment. I'll have to keep playing around with it and see if I can make it controllable.
I remember playing it on my old PC running a Pentium 4 and Radeon 9800 Pro. It was beautiful! Unfortunately I never got to finish the game so I was hoping to be able to now. :(

If you still have that pc put away it may be time to resurrect it. I personally keep pc's dating back to Win 95 and play old games on the hardware its expecting. Saves alot of issues. Pain in the ass swappin pc's alot though. Haha

Surprisingly I do still have that PC. It's embarrassing to admit, but that was my computer until about 2.5 years ago. :/ I couldn't run anything but ancient games with it. :) But something mostly went out on it; I think the HDD (It's ~20 years old now). It still boots up but the mouse won't move. That's why I finally decided to upgrade desktops. :)

Sounds like a corrupt driver to me. You could do like I did with an old P4 I had laying around, replaced all the caps on the vr then
used a IDE to Sata bridge to hook in a older SSD. Install your XP fresh, and game like its 1999 :).
I did that for one of my 98's actually, boy does 98 scream on a ssd :P

Nice. Still got my own discs, but I lost the box and manual years ago. Best of luck getting it working.

I got my copy way back in the 90's on Steam... lol

Game released in 2002 and I think it was available on Steam only sometime between 2013 and 2015. Or is this a joke I don't get? :)

Hmmm, Steam says I got it in 2010. I must have had it somewhere else or on cd before that then and forgot all about it :/
I did think it was older than 2002 also... My minds slipping with age I guess.

Random person here... :)
I don't see Mafia 1 mentioned in my Steam licenses thing, but I do see a Mafia 2 preorder on 11 August 2010. Wonder if the original Mafia game was a pre-order bonus or something?

You had Steam in the 90's wow even Gaben is in awe of that.

I'm not bothered about lacking the stuff other than for completion.

you could try it yourself and see what runs better. just make a backup copy of the installation folder, then upgrade to one version and play for some time.
then you can restore the original folder and try another version. better than reading comments especially if they are mixed.

Last time I tried mafia 1 I had to use a crack...
(I have a retail copy too, but I have no idea which version I tried)

Get the latest patch. Especially since for some unknown reason players, especially younger ones find the racing mission impossible, and they first reduced its difficulty to zero in the first patch, then added back a difficulty selector. There are also a few possible script errors resulting in soft locks, and the patches addressed some of them.
As for modern compatibility, you need to mess around to reduce the shadow issues, but it can be done. I played it through on Win10, and it was doable. I don't remember where I found the guides to set it up properly though. :(
Oh, and if it is the CD version, patch it then crack it. Much easier to run this way, and luckily not even illegal.

I installed the 1.3 patch. It seems to run much better speeds now and is more manageable. Unfortunately the music sometimes stops playing entirely and the shadows are still flickering and glitch, but it runs and appears to be the speed of play and looking around that it should be.
That's an interesting idea to crack a game I own. I've never done that before. In fact, since the digital platform has become so massive I can't even think of the last time I've had to use my CD drive. It's a throwback just to have 3 CDs to install the game. :)

With the old disk versions, it is easier to just have the CD for the key, and use a downloaded ISO to install and play.
I really wish I could remember where I found a pretty good solution to help with the constant shadow flickering, although IIRC the shadows can be turned off as well.

Oho, the unpatched Mafia 1, what a great game! But devil take that one race mission... :) I still remember hunting for a save file to skip it since I just couldn't win that race... :)
I was going to say it looks like the 1.3 patch is available at the Patches Scrolls website, which is somehow still around, but since you already found a patch never mind... :) And if you haven't already, later play Mafia II for an interesting easter egg type thing in one mission... :)

I know exactly what you're talking about. That race is extremely difficult. Patch 1.3 allows a difficulty to be chosen, but I want to play it the way it was originally released. I have no idea who could beat that race on hard, very hard or extreme! I beat Mafia II for PS3 years ago but had never finished Mafia 1. After I finish this one I'll replay II on PC with the DLC and move on to III. This is one amazing junk <3 series. ^_^

Hello lovely users of SG. I've just purchased a retail copy of Mafia 1 and started to play it today. It's the original 1.0 release and I'm wondering if anyone knows which version works best with modern machines. It appears there's 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit. Naturally I thought the latest would be the best but online comments seem mixed. Thank you for any and all help.
