Seems like a pirated version was installed onto your computer or one from a disk set was installed.

That half life folder is for all old source games. It doesn't actually contain the game files for half life but contains Source Engine files.

Look on your hard drive and see what happens when you install "just" HL2EP2.

I think there's a bunch of games that use the hl2 engine, therefore hl2 must be present on your hdd. Gratz on actually finding it; Valve apparently doesn't give a damn one could play hl2 for free in that case... because how many people have ever explored the wildness of the windows exlporer past their private user folder (my documents/pictures/music/etc) and how many would actually be able to do so even if they were presented exact orders about how to do so? :D

I don't think so, since it's not just the source game files and the files required for mods, it was the full game. Story and all.

That's because you have HL2 EP2 installed.
Last time I checked whenever you run EP2 it actually runs regular HL2 with the command line flag -episodic 2 or something like that. By just clicking hl2.exe without running the flags you launch base HL2. I think that's how it works.

I have Half-Life 2: Lost Coast and Half-Life 2: Deathmatch installed and when I install Half-Life 2 it was less than 1kb. In other words,I already (indirectly) installed it. Do you have one of the 2 I mentioned?

Episode 2 is not even it's own game, both episodes use the Half Life 2 exe to run the game.

yes, but the whole of Half Life 2 was there. The entire story with all of the complete chapters. It was as if I had bought it.

Don't worry, it happens the same with CS 1.6 & Half Life, Condition Zero & Half life, and CZ: Delted Scenes & Half Life. When you install one of those games, you also install the Half Life files, and the Half Life game is added to your library with the "Buy" option. I think it happens the same with Half Life 2 and Episode 2. Episode 2 needs a good piece of the original game's models, textures, sprites, animations, etc... So, think of Ep 2 as a mod or expansion, it needs the original game data to work. That's why you have HL 2 files in your pc and you are able to play it.

Well this is bullshit, I didn't get HL2 even though I have bought and downloaded Half Life 2 Episode 3 Chapter 5 Page 34 Line 12 :C
However while looking for HL2 I found that in my Steam\SteamApps\Uncommon folder there is a "3 halves" folder and inside it I've found HL3.exe! Game looks fine and plays normal (I completed 2 chapters) but I only wish it had a better engine. The new Unreal Engine isn't really as good as the old and rusty Source engine. Still, fun game.

got the folder and stuff, but no .exe I dont own hl episode 2. But I did get half life 1 on summer sale.

You might want to try and get a friend who has got the .exe and put it in the game files, then run it. Maybe edit it to change the directory it looks in.

Ok, I was looking through the Steamappscommon folder and I found something strange, Half Life 2. Even though I do NOT own half life 2. So I launched the .exe and it worked and launched HL2 normally (I know it did it as normal because I played hl2 on a friend's laptop). I do own half life 2 episode 2, but not the regular half life 2.
Is this a glitch? Because it did put me to the store page as if I didn't have it on my steam account but tried to use the exe however when I use the exe but it also launched HL2. Do I need to let Valve know about this?
EDIT: I have found a folder inside the Half Life 2 folder that is called "ep2", although this is still strange. I'll try playing through the mysteriously appearing game. I'll post edits later.
EDIT 2: Played through the first 2 chapters. Completely normal game.
EDIT 3: I tried launching it again, but it didn't launch as normal. It looks like there's a faint red filter on my screen.
EDIT 4: I don't have much time. They are coming for me. The slender-pewdiepie-swat-ST6-killerwhales have arrived do take back my ill gotten gains. If you're reading this, look behind you, illomenati might get you.
