For all you computer experts this must be a silly, noob question but I need some help.

Lately some of my games don't look very nice. Playing De-Void today made that more clear than ever. First I thought it had to be the game but when I looked at some walkthrough videos they all had excellent graphics. I have a pretty decent pc with a Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti video card so that should not be the problem either I think.

Tbh I never understood how to choice resolutions. Sometimes my subtitles are barely readable on a 60" screen, next time my graphics are terrible compared to others. So I've tried a few different ones in this game all without succes.

So can someone explain the basics to me on how to choice resolution and how to improve graphics? Please understand that I really don't know much about computers so be very clear. Everything you think to be obvious is not obvious to me :).

Well if you don't know what resolution your monitor is, then right click on your desktop and click display settings. Depending on what Operating system you have, it might be worded slightly differently.

Check if there's a resolution here, or if not click "advanced display settings".
Is there a resolution anywhere that says (recommended) near it? Then that's your native resolution for your monitor, and you should select that for every single game you play :)

Yes I did that. (1920 x 1080) But than the subtitles are extremely small in almost every game. Tried these first on this game and got very bad graphics.

This sound interesting but what is UI? How can I find a config file and if I find it, how can I manipulate it?
Any suggestions on what lower resolution as there usually are a lot of lower resolutions?

UI means user interface.

Some you can manipulate easy, but many you cant unless you are prepared to fiddle around a lot, and even so its not guaranteed to give a good result.

I read plenty of stories about big tvs having hard to read text, I dont know if theres a easy solution to fix that unfortunately. Not something I have experienced so I cant really look around.

Theres way too many resolutions to list, but ideally you want one on the same ratio as the native one. So if your tv is 1920x1080, the ratio is 16:9. Theres 1280x720, 1600x900, 1366×768 and others like it.

That's something to remember. First try the 16:9 ones.

How can I find a config file and if I find it, how can I manipulate it?

Config file differs for every games, but most commonly located in C:\Users\ your-pc-user-name \Documents\My Games. Look for a .ini file, you can open and edit with notepad. But make sure to create a backup of said file first.

It would help if you screenshot the settings in-game too, I think.

There really isn't a standard location for game configs. It can be in the game's install directory, somewhere in your Documents or even buried in the appdada directory. The PC Gaming Wiki can help you find your games config files as well as other useful information (although the particular game you mention doesn't have that information).

Be sure your in-game resolution is set the same as your TV's native resolution as well.
Non-native resolutions can look blurry or smeared.

Happy cakeday, too :)

Thank you for your suggestion but I always choice 1920x1080 first. Maybe my graphics card is too old after all? But the requirements of this game say GTX460 minimum.
Sorry not reading well. You are talking about my TV resolution not my pc resolution. Have to figure out what my TV has.
Will do that tomorrow I have to go to bed now. It's 4.00 at night overhere.

Well subtitles for different games are different. If you're sitting at a desk near the monitor, most subtitle sizes should be pretty decent.

As for bad graphics, resolution isn't the only thing that determines graphic quality. If it's at 1920x1080 (like me) then it should be just fine.
Just move the other graphics options you have higher up or to the maximum to get best graphics. If the game starts to have a choppy frame rate then you can slowly move the graphics settings to lower ones and see what is best for you.

Yes I only play on my TV.

Big ass tv. That's definitely the culprit seeing as your game is upscaling massively to a point beyond what developers would expect for a PC gmae, so the font isn't prepared to upscale with it. You should try lowering the resolution of the actual tv itself, ignore the computer part of it.

That's not a big ass tv, that's a lazy ass girl :).
Connect pc to tv, place a very comfortable chair right in front of it and enjoy. To me that's how gaming is meant o be.
Than your tip. How would lowering the resolution of my tv help?

(Sorry for the slow ass responses, in a group call and completely forgot what else I was doing)

Hah, hard to argue with that. I can't live without at least two monitors though and having one dinky ass monitor next to a 60" tv might drive me crazy.

Changing your pc's resolution is a lot more complicated, there's more to it than simply adding or taking away more pixels all around, hence why the fonts don't behave. tv's are stupid though, so for them it's as simple as that. I had to deal with using a small tv as a monitor for my pc for a few years and it was all sorts of problematic, they just don't go hand in hand unfortunately. Hence why monitors exist in the first place when they're more expensive at an equivalent ratio of resolution, else we'd all just be using tv's. But decreasing tv resolution rather than increasing pc resolution should definitely bring a better outcome.

(Also oops, I may have totally thought you were a guy from our previous discussions. Not entirely sure why. I guess because I can't think of a single female friend of mine that lives alone, they all seem to need the company of other females. At least you know better.)

Have you tried this website to adjust the resolution?
http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/The_Void

If your computer resolution looks great except gaming, all you need is just to find a way to adjust the game resolution. It is usually in game "option --> video setting". Otherwise, you might need to find a setting file in the game folder for some old games. The typical resolution is 1920X1080. Do you know your TV model? It is rare that you have to change your desktop resolution. I am downloading the game to see if I could help you resolve the problem.

You are downloading the wrong game I'm afraid. I was talking about De-void not the void. This game lets you choice video settings easily, I've found that. I have a Samsung tv PS60E550. Never thought about the TV being the problem. Maybe that's it. But than again it plays other games beautiful.

Damn, you are right, I download the wrong game. Well, could you post some screen shot so that we will be easier to tell what's going on?

I will try that tomorrow as it is 4 o'clock at night here. Never expect to find so many responses so soon. I've made a few screenshots on steam so I have to figure out how to post them here. Must say the screen shots don't look that bad.
Someone mentioned the problem might be me playing it on a TV screen. Maybe that's the case but other games look very beautiful on that same TV.

You could just use "print screen" on your keyboard to catch a screenshot and upload the file to imgur. I think some screenshots from your desktop (to see the fonts) and games will be helpful.

edit: I had the same problem when I was using a TV instead of a monitor. I simply bought a monitor because of my eyes and also because I'm lazy AF to find a fix xD. About the subtitles, have you tried windows clear text? Idk.

Sounds like the TV causing the issue, but if other games look beautiful on it, there has to be something else. The screenshots should really help later on. Also the TV configuration would be useful.

I have De-Void but never played it so I don't really know anything about the game specifically.

Changing the resolution to anything other than the tv's native resolution will only make things worse so definitely keep it at 1920 x 1080.

From the manual: Optimal resolution is 1920 X 1080 @ 60 Hz.

Definitely look at the refresh rate; if the game sets it to 72 Hz or something that will be the cause of your problems.

If other games look fine than that might be the most likely problem. I'm assuming the texture quality isn't set to low or anything.

As to the subtitles; most games unfortunately won't let you change the size of them.

it's the tv. my wifes secondary "monitor" is actually a 24inch television. text takes a full extra 3-4 seconds to become clear and readable, it comes in blurry and takes a few moments to clear up -- it's bad enough i have to disable subtitles for netflix when we watch tv from it.
