What is shady? Test out the flow of the game, if you don't like it it cost you nothing. If you do purchase it all like any other retail game. It even advertises on the store page you get one character but access to all the modes so it's not they are trying to hide it.

sorry mate, but it sounds appealing, I am going to try it, so what if you play one character? most games are based on playing only one character. You try it, you like it you buy it, you do not you have not lost any money except if you pay your internet with how much you download and not by month, hopefully most developers and companies did that so we did not have to buy them before we try them, or have to download them pirated to see if we want to buy them.

From what I understand you play the whole game (almost) with one single character, so it is free to play with ingame purchases. That's what I understood at least which in my book is pretty good, you want more you pay you do not you enjoy the game or not as is. Nobody loses.

The fact that you are butthurt about them offering a free demo to the game that let you try before you buy doesn't mean it's not appealing to anybody. It means it's not appealing to YOU personally.
It's so funny the number of people who complain about most game company no longer offering demos nowadays, and uses that to justify piracy. But when someone do offer the demo, then it's the other entitled kids who come out and complain that the entire thing is not free.

I doubt people are asking for the game to be free, but one out of like 25 characters that the game has is a bit stingy.
There's a plethora of ways they could have made it more appealing like 2-3 more free characters, the free character changing every week.

The free character WILL switch, just like SMITE does it. And the same strategy was used for the Xbox One version too. If you like the game, by all means, buy the season and get all the characters in it. Killer Instinct is an age old franchise, and this entry was one of the best fighting games I've ever seen. (Not to mention the first one I would love to own, thanks to C-C-C-COMBO BREAAKEEEEEEEEEEEEERRR!!!!!!) Its a miracle they didn't put a price tag on this considering it was such a hit and frankly one of the many reasons people even bought an Xbox One in the first place.

Just checked the game rotates the free character each month apparently.
And well that's the thing, people who were into KI before surely would've bought the game anyway, so the F2P version is for people unfamiliar with the game/franchise. And having such a limited choice of characters will turn most of them away once they get bored with the one free character, or if the one character isn't enjoyable to play as.
And I'm sure the game is fun, I was just commenting that the F2P model of the game is very lackluster. Plus combine that with it only being on the windows store and being win10 exclusive and a lot of people will be put off by that.

It's a smart move honestly. They have two black marks they had to overcome -- Windows 10 Store only and the fact that it's Iron Galaxy who released that lovely Arkham Knight port. They'll get a lot more people trying out the game this way.

it's pretty much a demo disguised as being a free game. with that said, I notice a trend with F2P games, it's gamers feeling entitled, like oh it only has this much free content, the reality remains the developers and publishers need to make money, even on F2P games.
Although in KI's case it's more of a demo, to give you the chance to play the game and see if you enjoy it enough to plunk down cash for the rest of the game. Nothing wrong with that I suppose, although MS should have just called it a demo..

Everything seems to have gone pretty smooth on my end so far. I have experienced some weird speed up once so far. At first I thought it was just a mutator but apparently it is a bug. It also instantly shut off once after a VS CPU match. Both of those though happened after tweaking the settings a bit. I haven't seen anything strange since not messing around with graphics options again.
