Reading on your consoles and the type of battle system you'd like, I'd say go for FFIV (DS), FFIII (DS) or FFX (Re-master).

Of the main games the first three and X use turn based systems. The rest use various real time (some with pause) battle systems

Honestly? Skip 1 and 2, which were more prototypes for series' possible direction at the time, and any other game will do. As much as FF2 is lambasted by the community it laid down groundwork for Romancing SaGa series and that alone is an achievement but I can see why FF fans would dislike it as a core game entry.

I would say 10,11 or 13....Mainly because those are the better looking games(And good stories too)...So, if you had dated graphics....go with those...otherwise, yer pretty much free to play them in ANY order since each is self contained. My top 3 favorite FF games are 4(Which they have a remake of on the DS, haven't played it so dunno how well it is), 5(not available on PS4 or 3DS but IS available on steam..pretty sure most FF games are on steam), and 7(Available on PS4, or if graphics are important to you, you could just wait for the "Coming soon" remake)

I only played 7,8,9,10
I can recommend 7 and 8
9 didn't really catch me, it's a step back imo from 7 and 8.
10 is ok, easy game especially the final boss which took me 1 hit from Auron.
I believe that 4,5,6 are the highly recommended ones from FF die hard fans.
I would also like to recommend Last Remnant, it's not Final Fantasy but it's a great JRPG if you can actually learn to like it's combat style.

If you have played Bravely Default and enjoyed the heck out of it like I did, I would strongly recommend some of the PS1 and PS2 games because they are very similar other than the fact you cant change jobs but that's it really. I would strongly suggest Final Fantasy X and X-2 because those are super innovative in my opinion. Of course I would also suggest the PS1 games as well. (Not 12 though, we never speak of 12's existence).

Since this is FF thread I'll ask: Is there any package which would include some (or all) of the following FF games: III, IV, IV: After the Years, V & VI? I already own VII (non-Steam), VIII and XIII + sequels for it. Doesn't have to be Steam but would nice if it is (just PC versions since my PS2 isn't available atm) :)

Dang. Kind of late here but I've played FF4(Cecil the Dark Knight, whatever one that is) and FF9. FF9 is a pretty solid experience.

So, I've never played any of the Final Fantasy games before. I know, shame on me, so more and more people told me I finally need to get into the series, mainly because I love other JRPGs like Bravely Default and Fire Emblem. There are so many games though, I don't know where to start.
I'm not sure how good the games are on PC compared to console, but generally don't care either way. I own a PS4 and a 3Ds, which limits the FF games I can play. I usually prefer the classic turn-based combat over real-time and if the story of a game sucks I'm not going to bother with it long. Anyone got recommendations?
Oh yeah, here's a little giveaway as thanks: Stacking
Edit: I just found out that I still own my GBA.
