Shouldn't "The Legend of Dragoon" get a sequel? Hell, even just a remaster?
I never played The Legend of Dragoon, but have always heard about it.
I always had a soft spot for JRPGs, thanks to Chrono Trigger and Mario RPG. After playing them on my SNES, I started looking for this genre and never stopped.
Nowadays, however, I think is hard to come by a JRPG as good as the old ones, and I'm not sure why. I just can't put my finger on it. I just miss a very good turn based RPG with charismatic characters and good story.

They're few and far between now for sure, but Steam happens to have a nice selection of "decent" titles that keep me happy enough. I've got too many games to keep me occupied to notice quality anymore, I just accept what I can get. :T
The golden age is long gone but we've got a nice bronze age going for us.

I really think Nino Kuni II looked fantastic on Steam, I had a blast with Dragon Quest Heroes 2, Final Fantasy 15 was a recent enough play for me to still fully recommend it, I find myself playing what I've got in the back catalog a lot so I've been recently blasting through Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed (a hack n slash version of their usual strategy RPG style) and Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet (a JRPG with guns as opposed to melee weaponry) and they're mostly just "okay."
I've also just been more preoccupied with speedrunning lately and have been focusing more on certain games outside of the RPG genre because of it... stupid blue hedgehog...

I actually played FF15 when it launched on PS4, but it had a lot of problems. I heard Square fixed a lot of stuff, so I've been meaning to try it again.
Ni No Kuni II really looks amazing! I have the first one and it's amazing. Heard some good things about the latest Dragon Quest too.
Guess now I just need time to try all that, LOL!

It's an experience, that's for sure. Make sure to take it for what it is and frame it in the era it came out in because at the time it was a bit of a marvel. I'd argue there's a lot of unspoken reason as to why SquareEnix has given it so much love over the years. I suggest playing it then 15 right after to get a sense of the leaps and bounds they've made.
Also, don't play 13.

At least the characters have personality, the battles are worth fighting, the story is passable.....
VII the characters were generic and boring, the story was barely there and the battles were so easy that In the several times I beat the game back then, only once did I have a character actually die in battle.
XIII is somewhat fun while VII was way too easy.
Maybe it's because I started with the original on my NES and loved all until VI (still the greatest one yet). Even liked IX better than them.
But, to each their own.

It's a great game. If you're going to play it though do it the way it was meant to be played, either on a CRT or with CRT shaders (Retroarch is great for this). Any other method of playing it is NOT authentic to how it was meant to be experienced.

I think my sister had the disks for The Legend of Dragoon but it was so long ago and we moved so it's forever gone now. I'm a huge fan of RPGs especially JRPGs, the first game me and my sisters played on the computer was the emulation of Final Fantasy VIII, I remember watching them play and wishing I could too. Unfortunately our time with computer was limited back then and our computer was so old I never got the chance to. I got to play FFIX later though and that became my favourite game of all time. I also played Chrono Cross and while it was beautiful the story was hard to understand and there was too many characters, it's still one of my favourite games though. I played Chrono Trigger much later and never finished it.
Then my sister got the PS2 as her graduation gift and she played the hell out of FFX, I was the youngest sibling so unfortunately I didn't get to play much. We were so in awe of the graphic, I remember staring at the Yuna dance scene and loving it so much. When my sisters got busy with university I got to play more and blew through Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, it was colorful and so fun to play. Unfortunately I can't afford consoles so I have yet to play other KH games, but I'm pretty sure that Square Enix will continue to release all the games as compilation in later Playstation generations too so I won't worry about missing it.
I'm pretty glad that JRPGs are getting released on Steam more nowadays, I actually played FFVII for the first time recently and really loved it, I can understand why the internet loves it so much. Thank you for giving away a copy, it's a really great game. I hope whoever win it will enjoy it.

The early Playstations had such great RPG games, I'm glad you got to experience some. A lot of folks love IX as it was a return to form from the sci-fi elements introduced by VII and VIII. There's a ton of Kingdom Hearts mobile spin offs that I'd argue are worth playing and emulation is so much better now than it's ever been. I've been able to scoop up Final Fantasy 3, 7, 13, and 13-2 recently from Dell.com thanks to Alienware Arena and my RNG.

I've enjoyed it since the first time I got to try it. I agree that it is lengthy but plenty of the RPGs of the day were long and story heavy. I really love the combat's timing system as it's just that much more interactive and the overall story resonates with me.
Plus it seems a lot less janky than say FF7 is. :T

I really, really miss Paper Mario, man. The first one especially. Such a perfectly paced and imaginative adventure.
Please let Bug Fables turn out to be everything I hope for...

Oh yeah, Paper Mario on the N64 is the shit and ooh, nice new wishlist add for me. Big thankies for that.
The Legend of Dragoon has nice a nice timing based mechanic on attacks called "additions" which many compare to the mini-game styled mechanics to attacks in the Paper Mario games. I'd absolutely recommend playing it if you haven't. :D

IT'S PAPER MARIO! WITH BUGS! I'm so glad you mentioned this! As much as I liked Super Paper Mario, it just wasn't the same; then, Sticker Star came out, and the series just up and died.
But yes, the original Paper Mario is a really neat animal; everything is wrapped up in such a tight little package, that you can collect literally every thing, and there's something charming about that. The sequel has more content, but it's more like a traditional RPG, so while also good, it's not quite the same.

I don't mind The Legend of Dragoon getting a sequel and/or a remaster (because why not), but, frankly, I haven't got the slightest idea what that is.

It's one of the best RPG games for the Playstation and happens to top the sales charts for ages every time it gets ported to a new system. If I remember correctly it held the top spot when ported to the PS3 for 4 months... maybe PS4, maybe weeks, I can't seem to find that article anymore with a rudimentary keyword search.

I never really liked JRPGs, although I loved the old dungeon-crawlers they were based off (Wizardry, Might and Magic, and though I never played them, Ultima and Bard's Tale).
At the time, I thought the Gold Box games were awesome, but they're nigh-unplayable today. But if someone wants to try a different take on old-school RPGs, and one that, despite hideous graphics, is still playable, I highly recommend Xyphus, which was a true hidden gem

Generally speaking, I don't care about graphics. UX, on the other hand, has improved by leaps and bounds. That's why rereleases are often better than dosbox emulation - they usually contain a lot of minor, but major, quality-of-life improvements. and/or, more importantly, getting rid of horrendous copy-protection schemes

I love games that get quality of life fixes in ports later on. Even just general bug fixes that the original releases had is enough for me. I found out about all the issues with the first Final Fantasy on the NES, how they were all fixed in the GBA port with extra content on top of it all, then found out even later that the 20th anniversary edition ported to the PSP has all those fixes, extra content, and more... and of course that's the version I still have around despite owning all 3. :T

Fairy Fencer F has a cimilar mechanic to the one you mentioned where you take these giant swords and plop them over dungeons to effect the stats of the monsters. I've always had a soft spot for Shining Force on the Genesis/Master Drive as I had it on PC for a good while.
