I made a few UFC prediction events in the past where users guessed the result of fights. The most accurate pickers won a Steam game. The last event was years ago, but I've brought it back with a few changes.

This is more for fun and to add something extra to watching the events rather than a group to win hundreds of games or AAA titles, so keep that in mind.

How it works:

  • I will invite interested users who meet the requirements and follow the instructions below to a private Steam group called MMAPredictions. There will be a limit to the number of users to make calculating and posting the scores manageable
  • I will only reply/invite successful users. There will be no explanation for users who aren't added to avoid possible 'calling out' or negative interactions about individual users or their past/current actions.
  • This post will be closed if the cap of (25) group members is reached
  • MMA events will be chosen 1-2 times a month and the fights listed in the Steam group.
  • Predictions will start in the Steam Group a few days before the event.
  • Users can edit predictions until the event starts. Any changes after that time will not be counted.
  • Users will get points for accurate predictions and the winner will get the respect and admiration of their peers.
  • There will be Steamgifts group giveaways for group members participating in the events.

User entry requirements:

  • A slight interest in MMA (you don't need to be a die-hard fan)
  • Minimum level 3 on Steamgifts
  • At least level 15 on Steam
  • No private profiles

How to apply:

  • Interested users comment on this thread answering the 3 questions below to join the group (There is no single 'correct' answer for some and you can google, they are just to help ensure that you've read the post properly and aren't just posting in every single 'group recruitment' post).
Edit: April 8 2024 - Questions were revised to keep things interesting
  • The tasks / questions:
    1. Name one MMA organization other than the UFC.
    2. Which commentator do you like best?
    3. Which fighter has the best nickname/ring name, in your opinion?

Q&A

  • Q. Do I need to make giveaways?
    A. No. You can make some for the group if you like, but it's not a requirement. If you do make them then no Hentai/Adult Only games, DailyIndieGame(DIG) games, or overpriced russian store games, please.
  • Q. Do I need to know anything about the sport?
    A. You don't need to know a lot but should have some interest rather than just joining to win games. Users who appear to have an interest are more likely to be chosen.
  • Q. Do I need to watch the events?
    A. No. They can be expensive, on at inconvenient times, and run for hours, so there's no need to watch them. It will make the events more interesting if you at least follow the build-up before the event or watch the highlights after the event though. It will also mean you can chat with the other members about the event.
  • Q. Will they all be UFC events?
    A. Not sure. Generally, the quality of fights is better than other organizations, but if it's easier for people to watch other streaming/televised events we can mix them in too.
  • Q. I'm on your blacklist, can I still join the group?
    A. If you are admitted to the group, I'll remove you from the list.
  • Q. I'm not interested in the group but I'm nice, why am I on your blacklist?
    A. It's probably not personal. I'm sure you're great. Maybe you collect games rather than playing them, maybe I think you won too many games, or maybe our star signs don't go well together, there are many possible reasons. Don't fret, I don't make many giveaways anyway so you're not missing much.

I've watched every UFC event (+ prelims, since UFC 100), but the bloated roster, stagnant top 10s, ocean of unnecessary rematches, and constantly dwindling amount of fighters I feel good rooting for has made me teeter on the edge of reconsidering my UFC-specific fandom for a minute. ... But I sure do like thinking about/picking fights, so I think I'm permanently stuck paying some level of attention to everything in the sport.

I hear you about the bloated roster, I've been watching for a little longer and those earlier events were filled with names you'd recognize. These days, especially with the Fight Night events, it's usually only names in the top few fights that I recognize. Also feels like what was once a sporting organization has moved more towards entertainment, a 'BMF' belt, rematches so that more marketable fighters can win, and what look like favorable matchups or fast title fights for Dana's favourites.

Predicting adds an extra level of interest to fights you wouldn't normally be invested in. Although, I often just guess based on the written record or make a snap judgment based on how bad their tattoos are!

Awesome; thanks! (Also, of all the random names to pull in that meme, you picked one of the very few fighters I've actually shared an MMA gym with. Extremely nice and welcoming guy whose late-career run has been one of the few heart-warming things in the sport for me as of late.)
