Oh, would you die in a Las Vegas in 11PM tomorow? For me? Pls.

So many variables to consider. Do I know them? Do I like/love them? Do I have to kill them? Etc, etc, etc....

Is your Fallout 3/New Vegas character a cannibal or ghastly scavenger??? XD
Just wondering what provoked this line of thought!

If I said I'm not comfortable talking about it,would you understand?
Joking aside,my personal experience with hunger didn't reach that level, fortunately. I think the most I've went without any water or food is about 30 hours or so,and with minimal food and water(~2 glasses of water a day) for about 4 days. I stumbled upon some interesting book dealing with the subject a while ago,and for some reason it jumped to my mind now.

I already answered your question in a reply above, I just find your question has way too many holes, and is probably a situation that cant possibly happen. its really an impossible question to answer without some semblance of the actual situation. in fact you already gave a small tidbit of the situation in your OP, you are stranded and you will get help.
Help from who? aliens that want to probe me from the rest of my life? wild animals that will eat me when they pull me out of the cave? a crazed madman who will flay me? is there an alternative route that I could take rather than eat this person? what is the thing I need that I would get by eating this person? really it is a question that IS all about the setting and the situation. you can't make a judgement based on nothing and you sure as hell cant make a judgement based on an impossibility.

I did realise that you already gave your response. A bit too ltae though.
Fine. You and your friend decided to go out for a stroll in a nearby forest. You saw that cave and decide to rest inside for a bit, when an earthquake happened. You agreed that the cave, looking pretty solid, would protect you from falling trees and the such and decided to go a bit more in when the entrance collapsed. The cave is very not big and you find after a short while that there is no exit, but there is a small stream of water enough to last you for however long you may need. Said rescue is from the town you both live in.

I'd go Hannibal Lector on them in a heartbeat. Too bad I don't have a nice Chianti.

As a last resort, yes. Though I wouldn't kill them to do so, they would have needed to die not of my hand. Though just as I wouldn't eat a human being unless it was absolutely necessary, I would also eat as little as was necessary. There are medical complications that come with eating other humans, though while that typically happens over generations, the possible detriment to my potential future children would be a factor too.

What ever happened to hunting? Or fishing? Gathering? use your brain a little..

Why are we in the cave in the first place? Expand a little on why we are here without food?
Comment has been collapsed.
so we are talking about a month? if the cave is small enough to not have some sort of animal, insect, creature, or mushroom growing in it, or a underground river or lake, we would run out of oxygen. if there is a small gap somewhere that lets air in, its likely that rainfall could get in. if there is little rain, the airflow would cause fluctuation in temperature and moisture content of the air, so it is somewhat likely we would be able to collect dew for water.
if we had a month in a cave, it would be plausible to haul enough of the rocks out of the way to escape ourselves.

I told that to my math teacher when he asked me what was the root of a negative one. Didn't work.
Look,I'm not an expert about how many days the average human can survive without food or water, but just assume that the only thing being the difference between a living you and a dead you is the guy next to you. the chances of this happening may not be high but I want to know what would you do if it did happen.

How about this then: you were on helicopter/plane trip and the engines failed, heli/plane crashes in a place were no one lives. after loong looong time you are close to starving to death. a person that was on plane/heli dies of starvation or something. would you or would you not eat him/her to survive.

But we wouldnt crash into a place where there is no food. Unless say the arctic, but even then, all we have to do is adapt. Kill other small animals, go icefishing, build an igloo.

Sure it is. If we had no setting, then how do we give an accurate answer?

How come we brought water but not food with us? O.o

This reminds me To Save a Squirrel episode from SpongeBob Squarepants(won't share the link but you will find the answer there)Watch it ^^
As for my reaction I would say I wouldn't eat it due to religional and moral issues.I would rather be dead to eat a human and survive, but of course easier said than done.So who knows what I will actually do in that situation.

Honestly if you were both going to die within a day or two, eating the other person would probably have little to no nutritional value, and you would die anyway from vitamin deficiency or something of the like. being that starved for nutrition would ensure that you had a supply of water available. now if you were going to die from dehydration, I could see that being a problem, but it would be very unlikely that two people wouldn't be able to get some source of water. you would have to be stranded in the middle of the desert with no tools to collect dew or anything...
if you're in a mountain, it would be much more likely to die of hypothermia before you die of dehydration, and eating the person wouldn't really help you much at that point also if you're on a mountain you gotta have some sort of tools...
that's not answering your question though, it just makes it hard to answer because it is an incredibly unlikely situation. I would say yes, in fact if you have some cloth or something you could tourniquet some part of their body or your own and then you could both eat it, that would probably save both of you in that time-span...

i'm a vegetarian and just like all vegetarians only animal i hate is homo sapiens sapiens. so why not? i heard between cheek and temple is delicious.
Comment has been collapsed.
well, you should. otherwise why would you become a vegetarian? health issues or something? if you don't belive the "all animals were created for humans" bullsh*t, and if you are not blind to see that humans f#ck whole planet up, then you should hate humans.

then why should i eat the other guy if i am about to die anyway after that? My question it's nope...i have a military family and i learned never to do that kind of things in any bad situations, it's about a mental thing and depends on how a man/woman was/had in real life (like job, family, culture, friends etc.).

I suppose one's answer depends on whether one believes in a God or an afterlife where our choices affect a kind of judgement. It would also depend on whether you want to ever be invited to dinner again as everyone would likely find out what happened and they would all wonder which you prefer, the roast beef or your buddy's arm.

True. I would not eat another person. I feel it would be a self-betrayal of my own character. The best qualities of human kind only have meaning when the stakes cost you everything - like when the price is a cherished friendship, a job, or whatever. Bravery, honor, integrity, etc. don't mean anything when life is easy and mean the most when death is a possibility.

If you both will die that day without eating, then you only have to fight the other guy off for that day to NOT be eaten. I also feel that most people would have long term psychological problems if they actually did eat their traveling companion. The rest of their life would likely result in feelings of guilt and shame, and they would likely tend to distance themselves from others. Living with some traumas is worse than dying because you never really live after that. I think a lot of people would wind up killing themselves within a few years. I say this because I know more than one person who has done so after suffering a tremendous trauma - one which was not that person's fault, the other was that person's fault. I also have several friends which are professionals in the field of psychology and they tell me that people whose morality is 'fluid' depending on the situation end up having greater problems dealing with issues in their lives in general.

"I say this because I know more than one person who has done so..."
This freaked me out for a moment before I realized you weren't talking about eating people...
Well, at least I hope you weren't... <_<

You did what you had to, no need to look for other's opinion to reasure you. If they disagree, you can eat them too.

Humans don't taste bad at all. I recommend a 18yo brunette girl with some fava beans and a nice chianti

You can do whatever you want with her before eating her. Just avoid making the same mistake I made once. double check your basement for possible escape routes

I'd just ate all her legs and arms before, she's an easy prey then for all that people desire ^^

I'll try to resist as much as i can and only when he attack to eat me, i'll try to kill him. I suppose i don't have a knife to cut flesh and eat, i have to bite right? I'll do only if anything else goes wrong. But eating people can cause mad cow desease and it's bad, really bad...

don't eat the brain dummy
besides you can only catch it from them if they had it first. don't eat subsistence hunters from the general wyoming nebraska region(chronic wasting) and don't eat native islanders(human brain) and you should be fine.

If you can only get it from something that already had it, then where did it come from?

It was sarcasm, I was saying it would be disgusting to eat raw human flesh. In all honesty, it depends on the person I was with. If it was someone who I respected and believed would be more beneficial to society than me, I'd sacrifice myself. If not, I'd eat them.

It'd be too much work to convince him, especially while we're both starving to death. I'd eat him.
Also, an afterthought on this question as a whole. The majority of the people who hypothetically would eat someone probably wouldn't. In reality, it's rather gory and most people would probably have trouble murdering someone, butchering their body, and eating them. Though it is indeed true that hunger can greatly twist the mind's ability to think clearly, so maybe not.

Assuming help is likely to arrive in a day or two and that you'll both die today if no one eats.
Edit: Consider that there is a chance of being eaten yourself if you don't eat first..
Edit 2: For all of you saying no,have you actually experienced hunger for more than a few hours? I assure you it is immensely painful and that it twists your ability to think clearly.
