Do you like Spawn?
Thanks for the suggestion, I might pick this one up to read with the kids.

Thanks for recommending Cerebus, I love a good satire now and then!

Captain &#%@! from Nextwave, looks good. I can always find satire fun to get into.
Spiderman bothers me because he is too good. I like most of Spidey's villains and the punny sense of humor most writer's give Spidey enough.

Death of the Sandman series if I had to pick anything from the Big Two. Books of Magic, Books of Fairy, and Fables.
I liked Superman's electric blue phase in the late 90's. A minority I'm sure.
Mirage era Michelangelo for characters.
Beasts of Burden (DH), TMNT (Mirage series will probably always be my favorite), TMNT IDW, TMNT Adventures (IDW reprint them. huzzah!) Usagi Yojimbo (now with IDW), Monstress (Image), classic Vampirella, classic Witchblade along with the Tomb Raider series it crossed over with. And Dragon Age trades.
I realize the thread asked about characters, but I'm finicky and my fave can change with story, lore, and development,

So many suggestions!
I didn't know there are Dragon Age comics! I'm replaying the series in order so I might read that before my interest wanes.

I've been reading over 20 years now. Just the tip of the iceberg. Heh. And I've always enjoyed indie stuff over the Big Two. Though I also have a soft spot for...
Devil's Reign (90's publisher crossover Marvel/Top Cow/Image introduced me to Witchblade when the series was still new.
Marvel's Code of Honor mini series from the 90s. It's from the perspective of a black cop working in a city full of superheroes/villains.
Oh, and Dragon Age comics seem to be with Dark Horse, there's some Mass Effect ones too if you enjoy those games as well.

I don't read many comics nowadays, if any, but back in the day I was a pretty big fan of Mortadelo y Filemón, a comedy series about two failure secret agents which has been running for over 50 years now.
But nowadays I can't say I have a favorite character, I like a lot of them and couldn't just set for one. Judge Dredd, Wolverine, Spiderman, Gambit, Batman, just to name a few. The wonder of comics is that there's so many of them to choose from.

Miracleman.
Specifically Alan Moore's reboot/reimagination, and including Neil Gaiman's exploration of the character once the main story ended.
All my other mentions would also be Alan Moore's work. While his Swamp Thing might be somewhat uneven, it has great moments and such a huge great start as Miracleman's reboot. V would go before Swamp Thing, anyway.
I also agree the Spawn movie didn't do any justice or good to the character. It happens too often with comic to movie adaptations. And with book to movie, game to movie, etc. I think you all get the idea ^_^

Neil Gaiman is one amazing writer, I'll definitely look at Miracleman.

Hmm not sure I have just one, but a couple favourites are
Prince Robot IV from Saga who has more to him than first glance might suggest as a villain & hilarious moments.
Tony Chu from Chew, love these comics so much and all of the characters have their own personality quirks and humour is spot on. Highly recommend.

It's Calvin all the way for me - that combination of character, art and writing never failed to delight. "Reality continues to ruin my life" is my favourite quote and I keep finding new dimensions to it in different contexts ranging from gamer to idealist to inner child!
Obelix comes close - the original Asterix comics are another shining example of those 3 key aspects coming together. Homer Simpson as well, though I only watched the animated version.
Among the superheroes, I always had a soft corner for Spiderman thanks to his origin story and wisecracks.

My favorite comic character is Spawn.
He was a highly decorated killer for the US secret services before his return as a Hellspawn. The film released in 1997 didn't do his character any justice.
Spawn's story is my favorite because he hesitated to get involved in adventures. He seems the most human of all the comics that I read. I relate to his ambivalence.
I played the 1995 game for hours on end as a kiddo. The PS2 game Spawn: Armaggedon was good and I would love to see a new game using Spawn's story.
What's your favorite comic character and why? I'm looking for new comic series to start and maybe you can influence my next read.

A few more hours to go for those of you interested in solving the puzzle. Read the comments if you're looking for a hint.

Thanks all for the suggestions. There's a lot of content that I haven't read before that was mentioned. I'm looking forward to reading Sandman and Dragon Age comics next.
The giveaways have ended, but here is the sadistic puzzle I made if anyone wants to try it.
