Windows 8 isn't as bad as people make it out to be, once you get over the new design, I've actually found it to be quicker than Windows 7 was.

i'm with xp too. what is the real reason to pass to 8? can 8 be faster than xp? i don't think so and speed is the single most important feature to me

I like Windows 8 more, due to a handful of efficiency tweaks. I hate the Metro UI, so I never use it. I just select the desktop icon and bam, never come across it again until I restart.

Windows 8 upgrade will only upgrade from Windows 7. It won't upgrade earlier versions of windows. (or at least that's what is says on the box)

EDIT: nevermind, I read it wrong. It just said you will have to reinstall all your programs if you're upgrading from XP or Vista.

Checking Amazon.com, Windows 8 is cheaper than 7 even for upgrades. I think that it would be a good deal, especially considering the next update that's supposed to solve some usability issues, but you will likely still have a harder time adjusting to it.

Apparently Windows 8 is faster and more efficient than Windows 7. It's similar in compatibility to Windows 7. As for the Metro UI, you can use add ons to swap out the Start screen for the traditional Start Menu.

Windows 8 first-install configuration was a pain in the ass because I have to tweak several policy configs to get full admin access. In Win 7 you can easily do this with turning off UAC, but in Win 8 I still can't mess up with my program files folder with UAC turned off. Also I did several tweaks to get rid of ribbon, lock screen etc.

Afterwards, I loved it. No much difference than Win 7 except the new Start menu (which I found more easier to navigate apps, really) and fast booting time.

If you have touchscreen, go for Win8. Otherwise, stay with 7, at least until 8.1 is out - 8 is borderline unusable with keyboard+mouse, and being a few percent faster doesn't help much.

Dafuq are you talking about? Borderline unusable? Have you even tried it? The Desktop part of win 8 is superior to win 7 in every way. Live tiles in metro are quite nice too, the biggest problem in win8 is the transition from desktop to metro and back. It's essentially 2 OS'es fighting for the control, which sucks. But once you learn to deal with it, it's better than Windows 7. Faster and nicer tools.

I would go Windows 8. It is better than Windows 7, one you take out the Metro interface and bring back the Start Menu. There are a number of programs that do both for you, even leaving you with a better Start Menu than what you would have on 7. It is a little faster than 7 and it has a number of upgraded/tweaked features that make it work a little better, once you get going with it.

With 8 you would get a longer life cycle and more focused updates, since it is the newer operating system. Also, 8.1 is supposed to end up eliminating most of the few complaints that are left with 8.

I used 7 since it came out, but I wouldn't go back from 8, which I also used since it came out. 8 is better. The original complaints were from people that never used it, that didn't know what they were doing, or that had really early builds. You barely hear anything now that it is out and most things have caught up with it.

Windows 8 improves Windows 7 in almost every way except the interface, which some people don't like, but is customizable. Unless you expect to have driver issues with old hardware, go for Win 8 and spend the extra money on something else.

Win7... I just have enough of Win8 on my brother's laptop and its problems - I haven't seen a Windows so fragile since Windows Me. Only a minor element conflicting and this stupid OS throws BSOD, after BSOD, after BSOD. And it isn't like it should have such problems - programs and codecs, I was installing were suppose to support Windows 8 (and for the most part they are) and yet... Win8 really loves to make sure that on some configurations they don't. If you really count on Win8 being faster - then yes, go for it. But with an amount of problems, I've experienced with this system and some programs and games not even working (at all) - hell no.

The only BSOD I got was from Avast right at the start because one service wasn't made for Windows 8. Windows 8 alone doesn't really just throw out BSODs, programs that aren't optimised for it do and you can't blame Microsoft or Windows for that...

Yes, but then... don't complain if an older game that would normally work on Windows 7 won't work... there are plenty of them.

Writing for PCGW how to run older games and then seeing them not working right on Windows 8 is almost a guilty pleasure of mine :D

Windows 8 is practically windows 7, with new "touch" designed UI

Never used Windows 8, I'm on Win7 and see no really reason to change.

I never said it was windows 7, I said "practically", plus, clearly you're retarded, since I said I never used it, but If you look into it, windows 8 was built on the foundation of windows 7, with some things changed here and there, but windows 8 was designed for a touch purpose in mind.

The difference between 7 and 8 is Metro. You still have a desktop which looks the same as the Windows 7 one and Metro and desktop apps are totally separated so there's no issue there. All games and programs that run on 7 run on 8 too. You won't really regret buying it as it's really cheap for an OS this good ;)
