Skyrim was never the best RPG. Best something else maybe, but not RPG.

it all comes to reference, I'm a massive skyrim fan, but can't ignore that Witcher 3 is pretty neat, visuals and quests and places seem much better than skyrim but still

Why are people making comparisons between modded skyrim and vanilla witcher 3?. It doesn't make sense, as of yet we can only compare vanilla versions of the game. There will be witcher 3 mods. Then such comparison a will make sense

Skyrim vanilla is not that great, the hype and longevity comes from the mod community. And there is no competitor in terms of writing since Witcher 2 on the triple A RPG market. Mass Effect was good but the third part was heavily flawed and it is more a shooter/action game with rpg elements and DA: Inquisition is way too repetitive with its MMO playstyle, the writing is great in some places but more mediocre in others.

Also - mods make a game better, but they do not make the game the best ever. If the game was the best ever, the mods would be nowhere near where they are for Skyrim.

Witcher 3

so far, i'd go with the witcher 3. quests aren't as linear, dialogues are extremely different from other games (almost no cliches) and the world is pretty brutal.
or maybe i have the "new game syndrome" which makes everything look awesome for the first weeks of playing it.

It all depends on preference.

If you want more customization then Skyrim is better.

If you like better characters and the better story then TW3 is better.

Skyrim has 1 big advantage, DRAGONS.

This poll is a LOL. No offense, I am just a huge fan of the witcher, novels and videogames :P For me will be always TW over TES.

Better quest design, better choice system, better characters but no sandbox and no open world (except, i guess, the witcher 3)

Customizing and roleplaying a custom character, modding the hell out of your game (and probably never play because you spent all the time modding), becoming the head of all guilds? Skyrim.

Playing an interesting preset character in a convincingly detailed dark world with a well-written story you can massively influence? The Witcher 3.

One important difference is that Skyrim's world scales with you, meaning you can always take on any quest whenever you like, and you'll meet challenges appropriate to your level. Makes things feel a bit generic but it gives you some freedom. Witcher 3 doesn't scale to you, so you can find weapons with level restrictions, and quests have a recommended level: you can try them anytime but might get crushed. It means each encounter is carefully crafted and unique, and the world feels more real.

Overall my personal preference goes strongly to Witcher 3. For the best experience you should watch The Witcher 1 story recap, and play or watch both Iorveth's and Roche's path in The Witcher 2.
