There is always a risk when trading. both inside and outside of steams own Trading system.
Shame really

Yes, please elaborate. The point of a controlled system is to minimize such risks.

ah, I remember the MoneyHypeMike incident ... let me google for the pastebin
Edit: there you go

well I see that I have lost a couple of items from my tf2 inventory, so I guess the reason is that I traded with hijacker. There was no reason to ban me for that, but if the ban is temporary, I can live with that.
Comment has been collapsed.
Holy shit... Getting trade banned for something that isn't even his fault.
So before we trade with anyone do we ask the other party if he is a scammer or a an account hijacker?
Comment has been collapsed.
Yup. And better bend and ask nicely for double, because soon every monopolist providing vital service, no matter if Valve, Google, Sony or Facebook can erase you from the net with one click.
Oh, and pray they never create comprehensive database of 'offenders' for crossbans.

Lets say, i purchase a game (on my fresh new fake account). trade off the game. then reverse the purchase. The person who i traded with will have their game revoked. The person you trade with can revoke the game they purchased etc. But when they do, their account will be disabled pending investigation. As will your fake account. but by then, you can already trade off the game you gained for something else.
Keep on trading and trading... yeah.. you see where it goes

This sucks, but have you done anything wrong? The cd-keys were not good?
Comment has been collapsed.
they were fine, you simply aren't allowed to trade with anything that you can't put in trading window.
Comment has been collapsed.
Because their anti-hacker software sees one side giving big item, and the other nothing (because you say gave him CD key in chat) and alerts mod which can give you blanket ban if he finds the transaction suspicious (especially if he sees multiple such transactions).
Comment has been collapsed.
Except, yes it can. Valve has bots monitoring everything, if they see suspicious one-sided activity (because you gave key in chat) they flag you, or if it's serious, they can even give you short term ban. Thing being legally purchased or not doesn't matter, Steam TOS gives Valve (at least in USA) ability to do whatever they want at the moment. One bad appearance and you can say goodbye to your trading rights or even whole account.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'm sorry but I find this hard to believe. If I buy my friend a key LEGALLY and send it over Steam Chat (which I am fairly certain isn't monitored just like Hotmail do not have the right to read your emails unless circumstances permit it) they cannot ban me. It is a legally acquired key and i am merely using their chat service to give it to someone else.
Steam can only see what you ACTIVATE or TRADE using their system.
Comment has been collapsed.
By 'one sided' I meant, say, your friend giving you giftable copy of the game, while you get key in chat. What Valve sees is one sided transaction, and while one won't raise suspicion, repeated trading for keys or paypal money might result in a flag or even ban. And while such ban could be probably easily lifted, once, the Valve has all the rights to ban you on their whim. Seriously, have you read the TOS?

Wow my last two trades could have easily gotten me banned...
1) U-Play Assassin's Creed 3 key (received with gfx card) for Alan Wake Franchise (heh it's still in my inventory because I haven't had time to game much), with a Chinese user no doubt (which isn't an issue for me but I know US gaming services aren't always the most trusting of Chinese IP addresses)
2) DotA 2 Pass (it was one I kept because it didn't have the Chinese restriction on it, those I gave to the DotA bot) for 3 good TF2 items (one of them being a crate key). I was able to get rid of 3x copies of "The Ship - 2 Pack Gift" too, but that wasn't part of trade.
I guess the 2nd was against the rules, but it should have throw up some flags =p.

I did, but it will take a while for them to answer.

I am confident we are not getting the whole story. Steam has no way of knowing if you are trading keys or not unless someone you trade with reports you and even then I am doubtful about whether the mere fact that you traded a key would be a banable offense. If a person knowingly traded keys with you and had a good experience, why would they then report you? They could end up with a trade-ban themselves (assuming Steam bans people for this), plus why would they have ill will towards you?
My guess is that either you have received or given out stolen keys (maybe you bought from a third party scam cd-key seller, maybe you traded for them).
Comment has been collapsed.
I really don't know what else would be the reason, we'll see when support answers.
Comment has been collapsed.
For trading keys you say http://www.steamtrades.com/user/SexyFelga. Who was that guy with who you talked? I made over 200 trades, mostly for keys and I never had problems. Also it's not against Steam rules to trade keys, you can't only do that on Steam forums.

Why did you link his SG profile, what am i supposed to see here?

Because it never happened to me it can't happen logic.

Same thing happened here, except no keys were involved. I was trade banned after trading Dead Space Pack (gift) for TF2 items.
The account I traded with was allegedly hijacked and once the original owner retrieved it and noticed the items were missing they contacted support. Support being very intelligent people tracked the items down to me and gave me a trade ban. After receiving the ban and looking my account over I noticed that I was missing TF2 items as well and using trade history, verified that it was all the items I had received in that trade.
I contacted Steam support, explained it to them, after a few messages they removed the trade ban and gave me the "don't trade with people you don't know". Unfortunately I never received Dead Space Pack, despite the fact that their FAQ states I should have. I was more concerned about the trade ban though, so I never bothered pursuing the gift.

Well all the hate...but still it's pretty clear that as soon as they realize there has been fraud all accounts involved get a tradeban,so the stuff doesnt get spread all over the world. They gotta sort things out. Nothing else in real life.
That said, the Mike stuff was still horribly solved.
Peroxide, what did support say why you didnt get your DSpack back?
Also,yeah..I know the "dont trade with unknown ppl" is unrealistic, but random accounts adding me offering stuff is still different to communicating with ppl on forums before doing a trade.
Comment has been collapsed.
Hell, it still could happen if the guy you're dealing with didn't know about the true origin of stuff he's trading... Heck, I don't even remember what I traded with who, I always tell myself I should start to write down this shit somewhere but I'm too lazy. So far I didn't have any problems but a week ago when I noticed one thing is missing from my library and I couldn't find out what was it, I thought that's it, I traded with some fishy guy. After longer consideration (and checking all of my wins if they are still there), I figured it was probably free weekend game, not something I actually won or traded for. But for like 15 minutes or more I was really concerned.
Comment has been collapsed.
When I contacted Steam Support, I only stated that I believed my account was banned in error and I'd like them to investigate. I expected them to reverse the trade and that I would automatically get the gift, but that was not the case and I did not bother questioning why it wasn't returned as it took two weeks to get it all straightened out.
I can attest to the fact that they ban anyone and everyone involved without doing research as two of my spare accounts were also banned at the same time and I had to specifically ask for each to be unbanned. In case anyone is curious, they're idle accounts that I use to store crates and dirty weapons/hats.

what happened with MoneyHypeMike? if you can plz provide a link, i want to know abt it. THanks

Christ, Steam have no clue how to advise. I work for a bank as a techie, but tend to see our share of fraud and advising someone to avoid a certain type of activity is the most ridiculous and self-damaging thing a company can do. Why? Because once a fraudster/fraud gang has identified a companies/individuals controls they will do something out of character and the hapless victim will then blame the company for advising him this new method was safe. In this case, the fraudster only needs to give some items from their inventory, Mike (assuming he takes Steam's advice) would accept - as it is not the full TF2 inventory - and end up in exactly the same situation.
Unfortunately, by acting as a middleman, Mike has inadvertently helped to facilitate the fraud and, although I disagree with it wholeheartedly both in this instance and in banking, all facilitators will be judged as a guilty party. Fortunately my bank now fully investigates the matter and uses common sense to identify an "unwitting beneficiary" of fraud and the matter gets overturned (but those black marks stay on file in case you're not so unwitting afterall).

Yup, Steam Support is awful, incompetent, and slow. Submitted a fairly simple request 3 weeks ago. We've been going back and forth on it, but they won't help. I won't mention what the issue is, but suffice it to say, they could have fixed it in a few hours. And today is day 21. I used to defend Steam Support as being "not that bad", but to hell with that. My personal story and all the BS stories that everyone else tells have convinced me that they ARE "that bad"
Comment has been collapsed.
Man, that sucks :/
Though everyone keeps bashing Origin support, after I read MoneyHypeMikes paste I think Origin does a better job with handling this kinda issue
Comment has been collapsed.
At the very least, Origin will offer up free games if you push them hard enough on an unresolved ticket. Valve's rules are so rigid that even bringing up the topic of refunds or replacements can often cause a ticket to be closed by their support staff.
Comment has been collapsed.
Origin also has over the phone support which Steam/Valve seems to lack according to MoneyHypeMikes replies
EDIT : No, Not an EA rep xD Just sad that this happened to SexyFelga and MoneyHypeMike though it's no fault of their own

I did, I miss those days. Wish there were a system though that allowed a downloadable copy like Steam, but only for recovery purposes should your discs kick the bucket. I have somewhere around 20 titles I can no longer play thanks to that. >.<

Wait, wut? You know that steam has drm-free games, right?
Comment has been collapsed.
Hmm, nope, it isnt. Steam is a digital distribution software. Steamworks is DRM. Not every games uses it and quite a bit of them are drm-free and can be run without steam, copy and pasted to a pen and played in any PC, etc.

seems that you are right, I just tried to run ssfiv with normal exe and it didn't run steam first.

Yeah, I started Steam few minutes ago, and I got greeted by this nice red Steam alert message. Beautiful. I still don't know the reason, but, after reading about that MoneyHypeMike incident, I think I know the reason. I realised I miss a couple of items in my tf2 inventory, so the reason is probably similar to the one that MoneyHypeMike had when he got trade ban. This is bullshit, there is no way to know if the items were stolen, it shouldn't affect me at all, but what can you do. I just hope this is temporary ban.
EDIT: They unbanned me, the reason was, as I said, because I traded with hijacker. Lost a couple of items, no big harm though.
