Treasure Hunt

I first intended this to be for Skyrim, but since many (some) people have it already, the price will be one of your own choice (<50€ to be kind to my wallet). This is the first part of two. I allow you to discuss the key but don't help others too much, it lowers your own possibilities.

So, break this. Deadline is Friday at 20:00 GMT .

Well holy crap. Clearly you put a lot of work into this, so good on you. I think I'll wait until I have a few hours of free time to set aside before diving into this xD

And of course, thanks for the giveaway!

Well anyways. Since i am not going to buy the book and google books are missing the following pages i am going to try to hint you.

1) The person in the picture is Ulysses Simpson Grant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulysses_S._Grant) though not sure what J.V means lol

2) So as it said - J.V Ulysses Simpson Grant 1867 + google books (told you - google books do not let me to watch the following pages :/)

3) And the rest is easy. p78 means page 78, r1 means row 1, w7 means word 7 etc.

4) 1867 is volume 17 or volume 18 (volume January 1-September 30, 1867 and volume 18 October 1, 1867-June 30, 1868)

5) Here you can find the books http://library.msstate.edu/usgrant/the_papers.asp (though it does not open for me. Maybe America's libraries are blocking some EU countries? Lol. I just can't open the book :/)

Good luck to whoever wins this one. Was easy to find out :)

EDIT: Oh and thanks for the giveaway :P

Wanna know something? As a weird twist, the number 42 is easily accessible from the answer.

This is not a clue so pay no attention to it, it will only make it worse.

I've checked out the Papers of Ulysses S. Grant, but the ones from 1867 aren't on google books as others mentioned. I found "The Quest for Ulysses" by J.V. Luce, but it has too few pages and no connection to 1867. There was a scholar named John Heyl Vincent who was writing in 1867 and wrote a lot about Ulysses S. Grant, but the only thing he wrote in 1867 was too short, unrelated, and isn't available on google books.

I'm not sure if I'm trying way too hard or not nearly hard enough.

I think I have found the correct book for the key, but I don't know if I am reading the correct edition. I am trying the page/row/word suggestion of bambolis, but with the source text I am using, some pages don't have enough rows, or rows don't have enough words.

I've also found the correct book but I haven't got enough pages (for example 515). But I think there is something about letters - p78 r1 w7 - is really clear, but g515w8 r5 is more difficult ("g" is in word "p-a-g-e" as the rest of letters: "a" and "e", but anyway I don't know what could I do). To sum up - I have the key (great puzzle btw ;) ) but I still dont know how to get another words.

I finally found the right edition, and there were enough pages to find the answer. My problem was how many version of the book I had to look at to find the right one.

I sent my answer in, but I don't know how I will find out if I have succeeded at this round.
