I have money to buy a violin and I want to start practicing. The problem is that in my city, there are no teachers to make classes and the only thing I can think of is to start watching videos on Youtube. To those skilled in the art, do you think that watching videos is really useful?

If you watch the right videos... But you probably need someone to correct your mistakes. Some people can correct themselves and copy the techniques taught in videos just fine... while others are oblivious to their mistakes. It really depends both on video and the person.

She taught herself to sing by watching videos so it can be useful but like Sinovera said, you'll want someone who can provide you with feedback. Maybe you could upload vids of yourself playing and share them with people who can critique your performances.

I'm not a violin player so I can't help you with your question, but if you do decide to teach yourself through videos, it'd be neat if you posted your progress on here. :P

  • It'd be great for the basics, though you'd have to find someone to correct your posture, maybe after a month or two see if someone you know in rl or someone willing to check your posture via Skype or video can help you? When I learned the violin when I was younger there were certain little things like how to hold the bow and where your pinky goes etc. that I was always getting corrected for, but I'm sure there's videos that explain those in detail! Anyhow, good luck to ya!!

Places like Bandhappy.com will be able to help you out. A lot of the tutors are actual touring musicians who do it. Really great site if you can find the right person.

I really think that you should do anything you can to find someone to be teach you all the basics, because if you get them wrong it's very hard to fix later. Once you can play a few songs perfectly(and given a score and some time, you could play it) you can use youtube to learn new chords, songs, etc.
