Or he could use the actually free Classic Shell that does the exact same thing, and then some, instead of resorting to piracy.

Why don't you use Windows 8 for a while and adapt to the lack of a Start Menu? The taskbar being how it was in Windows 7 is very handy, and once you pin just a couple items on that taskbar, you really find no need for a start menu. You can pin your most used programs there, so you'd never would have to open a start menu, and you can also pin things like windows explorer, control panel, and so on. They really make it so the start menu isn't necessary, and honestly, if you just refuse to change away from Start Menus, then you're just forcing yourself to go off and get 3rd party software to cover it every time you get a new Windows.
There's really no reason not to get used to having no start menu in Win8, chances of them bringing it back? Seem very small, because people are happy with Win8 once they adapt to the lack of the start menu being the way it was. You still do have a start menu, but it's not very helpful I agree with that, but Microsoft will adapt and make changes to that big start menu, before they bring back the start menu you knew before.

Yeah, let's pin everything on the taskbar so we have a clutter of unopened applications along with the 10-20 open windows we're currently using. The first thing I did in Win7 was unpin everything so I wouldn't have the applications that aren't running cluttering the taskbar.

That was very amateur of you. Taskbar gives an easy access to frequently used applications, allows you to group their windows and access jump-lists.

Maybe if you have very little applications opened it can be useful. Having about 20 different things opened at once tend to clutter the taskbar a lot. Last thing I need is the icons of non-running applications mixed with the running ones. I added a launch bar (similar to the one in XP) for applications that I really need often, for the rest there's the start menu.

That's pretty much the thing. You're talking as if you are obligated to pin some obscure applications on your taskbar rather than the ones you use frequently.

No, I'm just saying that I don't want running and non-running application cluttering the same area of my taskbar. Just because I use it often doesn't mean it's always running.

Non-running being there is kind of the point. So that you have quick access to them. If your issue is that they're large, you can use the small icons in properties, makes them no bigger than the xp quick launch icons were, which for that matter needed to be small back then because very low resolutions were still common. In fact I think through the majority of the time that I used Windows XP, I was only in 1024x768, now at 1920x1080, having icons of decent size aren't an issue. In fact as well, is that if you do pin a ton of things to your taskbar (25+) the icons auto-scale to fit them all. Oh, and on top of everything. Best feature in my opinion of Windows 8 is WinKey + Print Screen. Automatic .jpg screenshots are very time saving and eliminate the typical hassle of previous methods. At least, surely made me love it. :p

I've made it my goal to just buy every other OS Microsoft makes.
XP great, vista skip, 7 great, 8 skip

As some of you might remember I created a thread about buying new computer a few weeks ago. I've made up my mind and now I have superb gaming PC which runs win8. And while I actually enjoy the system I miss the start menu a lot. I googled "start menu for win8" but all I found was a bunch of really shady sites which suggested me buying some weird stuff from them. So I'd like to ask you guys , is there an actual safe way to bring the start menu back without screwing up the whole system?
Thanks in advance!
