Okay,I thought I was going to buy an AMD radeon 7970 GHz edition (the overclocked one) but then I read some stories about AMD's cards dying really fast. Is this true? Another option for me would be a GTX 670 SC, but its weaker than the 7970.

-UPDATE: Already bought and installed the Radeon 7970.

Just go for a normal 7970 with good cooling. Its cheaper and performs the same.

No it doesn't. I'd like to see you run a 7970 non ghz at 1200/1700 on stock voltage like I can. that's a 25-30% inc in performance vs stock 7970

My bad I'm guessing you meant performs the same as the gtx 670 SC xD

Maybe not, but overvolting is fine. I use a water block anyways.

Matrox or Intel! :D

Nah, I'd go with nvidia, a bit pricier but often worth it due to PhysX support

I would get an AMidia card I hear those are good.

Thats like an AMD card running next to a Nvidia card for Physx.

Nvidia FTW -
1) Brought out and uses real PhysX, AMD just fakes it.
2) Friendly game development tools to produce better higher performance games quicker by developers. AMD adds confusion for developers and they normally end up bug/glitch ridden for the first releases.
3) Drivers updated regularly to improve latest games performance. AMD just releases bug fixes.
4) Might cost a bit more, but best performance, currently top of market.
5) Better support/tools/services.

You get what you pay for...

Look at the Nvidfanboys, the 7970ghz edition is the best bang for your buck on the market currently stop trying to lie to people because you're fanboying.

Try to calculate PhysX in, and you get an even bang for your buck imho. And with that, nVidia is just more reliable based on my experiences.

If you have a decent CPU, you can always have PhysX on to low/medium and make it render via CPU. Also, I don't really see that big of a benefit in PhysX personally. As for reliability, the newer drivers are really a turning point for AMD. The drivers are just as stable as nvidia's.

It's not just about drivers. I used to have an X1950Pro, and it died after a month with overheating, paid some extra to get a 9600GT replacement and it's happily singing in my rig after like 5 years.

Once again, thats something that changed in recent years. The 9600GT is an very old card. With the newer GPUs, reliability and life are pretty much equal.

Thats actually really good to hear, good on them for getting the drivers up to snuff, thats always something that bugged me and people I know that had AMD cards, very often when games were first released AMD cards had issues based on driver faults(I assume thats why), I do hear that its a non issue lately which is great since I would hate AMD to fall down....competition is a good thing in this market, we don't want to pay 1 grand for a card because of a monopoly lol.

Indeed. I've ran AMD cards alongside nvidia cards (in two separate machines ,of course, for the last two gens) for mining and BOINC. I use that machine for gaming sometimes and the drivers really have improved quite a bit. Compared to the nvidia setup I have, both are equally stable (and equally terrible on Linux but thats a whole different story), and with the performance increase of AMD cards, I've switched to mainly gaming with AMD GPU setup (especially since ASICs are replacing GPU mining too).

I see, well I probably wont buy a card for a while, hope they keep up the good job honestly, maybe my next will be a AMD card, never thought I would even think about doing that but good to hear.

Oh come on, everyone has preference and if that preference costs them a bit more money that does not make them a fanboy....saying what you said sounds more like fanboy talk to me actually.

AMD isn't garbage, some people just prefer Nvidia based on experiences, I for one always had less issues with Nvidia cards, maybe someone has had the opposite experience that I have had, some people like the boost they get with Physx performance wise when turned on with an Nvidia card, some could care less for it and think its not important at all.

Preference, thats really it.

Amd kinda gets in the market because of its price as i see it.

If the money is not a problem people usually go with nvidia, intel, etc. It's always better to benchmark and picking up the best performance instead buying it because of the brand.

So by that standard, AMD.

I fully agree with you that AMD CPUs are not up to par with Intel CPUs
However, when you compare equivalent AMD and nVidia cards, there really isn't any (significant) difference

I really dont think there is much in it tbh when comparing equivalent amd and nvidia models, just comes down to performance through driver support and extra stuff like amd's new tress fx which runs like crap on nvidia cards and I presume vice versa with nvidias physx on amd cards (dont quote me)

I know a lot of people bash AMD but from personal experience I would choose AMD over Nvidia. I've owned around 6 different AMD cards over the last 10+ years between 3 different PC's and I have never had a card die or malfunction in any way. Even if a card dies most of them come with a double lifetime warranty so you'll get a factory new one for no charge, you can't really beat that.

I've had nothing but trouble with Catalyst drivers. I use Nvidia simply because of great driver support. And, well, EVGA.

  1. 670 (+- In many tests) = 6970
  2. Nvidia physx + optimized driver
  3. 670 nice overclocked
  4. 670 - 170 WATTs (80 watts consumes less.)
    6970- 250 Watts
  5. Most games are better on Nvidia(AMD drivers are always delays and they wet).

I got an Asus Ati 7970 (4 -5 months) no driver problems or anything like that for the moment. On the top of all they say Nvidia is better (who knows). But in your case it seems AMD is the way to go, unless you hae money for an Nvidia Titan.

I have a Nvidia card and never had any problems with it (its going close to 5 years now). amd cards i previously owned died or had malfunctions in them. I got refunded or got a new card from AMD when the card died within a year so that is nice on their part. But if you do not want all that running around to get a refund or a new card i suggest go with Nvidia.
