Okay,I thought I was going to buy an AMD radeon 7970 GHz edition (the overclocked one) but then I read some stories about AMD's cards dying really fast. Is this true? Another option for me would be a GTX 670 SC, but its weaker than the 7970.

-UPDATE: Already bought and installed the Radeon 7970.

I have Nvidia, but AMD supports (it's easier for games to run on it) more and more games recently.

I think that's just your hate for NVIDIA speaking. It's not "easier" to run games on either brand of card...
I've never EVER run into a game that you can't play on either card.

I love how AMD and Nvidia is like the Playstation and Xbox fanboy war for PC gamers.

I'm currently using AMD, and I really like it better than Nvidia, which I use on my other computer.

However I will say the Nvidia update system is so much easier. It takes a lot of time to download AMD updates from what I've found.
You have to download the utility to detect the card or download them manually, then it has to download the install Catalyst, then update from Catalyst.

Nvidia's process is much shorter, but I do like AMD overall better.

Catalyst control center is horrendous. Nvidia has PhysX drivers, ATI/AMD has Eyefinity, 95% of people aren't going to be using eyefinity, go with nvidia.

Nvidia by far.

You get what you pay for... (Springs to mind)
Don't go for the cheaper option only to save a bit of money.. You WILL Regret it.

Don't put up with the fail that is catalyst control center/drivers. If you don't want to run a ton of monitors like a clown who loves monitor bezels up in his image then avoid that terrible marketing gimmick that is Eyefinity.

Buy the real deal! Don't substitute!

Enjoy the Premium experience that all Nvidia users take for granted. The ease of updates, quick bug-fixes and constant driver updates that increase performance in those games that matter.(The newest ones)
Enjoy the beauty that is Nvidia Phys-X. (instead of slowing down the core engine of a game by processing physics on your CPU)
Enjoy using the optimal game settings with minimal effort thanks to the new Geforce Experience utility. (which integrates flawlessly with the drivers and provides seamless auto updating functionality for the drivers too. that also includes beta drivers if you would like them)

All the kids on this forum are probably going to scream "fanboy" at my post.

I assure you I am only speaking from a vast experience with both companies. I used to do what the majority of gamers do and cheap out on the AMD alternative and then act like I wasn't suffering and missing out.

I have long since preferred my Nvidia cards due to the numerous issues my friends and I have experienced. Some of which still stand by AMD and then drool when they see my lesser Nvidia card cranking out better looking games due to the little things like Phys-X and Nvidia driver optimisations. (AMD users claim Phys-X isn't worth the money)

At the end of the day... Its your money. But believe me when I say what I say to all of my friends who are looking for an upgrade... "Buy an Nvidia card. You WON'T Regret IT!"

Peace to the AMD Fanboys, I mean no disrespect, Say what you want but I will still be happier with Nvidia's products than AMD could ever hope to achieve with the majority of its customers.

I was always in the AMD/ATI group since I thought, hey, its just as fast for a lower price! But, after going with an Intel i7 and Nvidia 670, I am now a convert. Much better drivers and compatibility. if you are on a budget, then AMD is fine, but if you afford a little bit more, go with NVIDIA.

Already bought the AMD card, but we'll see if your claims are true when it arrives.
Also, I don't really mind phys-X as it's only implented for a few games out there.
I'll reply on this when the radeon card arrives and let you see my experiences.

"I read some stories about AMD's cards dying really fast. Is this true?"

No.

Either brand is fine. Both are good. And both have had their problems. People making claims about such-and-such brand card having bad drivers or high failure rates or whatever other propaganda they have been spoon fed are either trolling or just ill-informed idiots regurgitating things they have read because they don't know any better. The only advice to give credit to are the people who aren't making blanket statements about how one brand is better than the other, because they are the only ones who actually know what they are talking about.

I agree with most of your statement, except that having an opinion on your preferred brand does not make one an idiot imo. If it's an opinion based on ones experiences with a product then I don't see that as propaganda, but as ones opinion based on their experience with said product..
If I misunderstood your implied intent then my apologies. :)

I have one NV card since 2001(no issues with it) and I have only NV cards because they have better drivers for linux; but if I will buy for M$ I will choose AMD :)

You should do poll about it to see the results easily, but from my experiences I am strongly recommending NVIDIA (3 cards without problems) over AMD (1 card with lots of problems).

Good good, now OC that 3570k? :) I'll run it on my 3570k@4.4 and 670FTW just because I want to see the comparison. Same mobo as me too I just noticed, nice choice :)

My results barely, barely better than yours lol, and that's only because of my CPU OC, so once you OC you'll beat me for sure.

I would pick Nvidia for sure. I had ATI before AMD took them over and was sorely dissapointed in their drivers.

I've had nvidias my whole life.
I've had my 9800gt sice it came out a long ago. I am still able to play all games on med/low (exept the ones with dx11 support only cough crysis3 cough bulls** cough*). But i had to make a oven reflow december 2012 and another one just yesterday but it's still going strong.
But i will be upgrading my pc soon, not to a top of the line but to a better config, and i will be buying a 7770 GHz Edition.

Like some people have said, go for the hardware with the best performance for you budget. Fanboys will be fanboys...

BTW, what do you guys think, going from my current PC:
Intel E5400 OC'ed @ 3.60GHz
2x 2gb ddr2 od'ed@ 900MHZ
Nvidia 9800gt 512mb

To my future PC:
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition
2x 4gb ddr3 1600
Ati HD 7770 GHz Edition

Have a look at the AMD (not ATI, AMD bought them some years ago) 7790. It's an improved 7770, so the price shouldn't increase too much and you'll get a performance boost.

Thanks for the info.
But overall, will i see and fell much difference between the 2 build?
Even the AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 2x 4gb ddr3 1600 Ati HD 7770 GHz Edition build be a big stretch in terms of money and i will be buying it in 2 parts: first gpu and psu to put in my current build, and then the cpu/mboard/ram (2 oven reflows 4/5 months apart is a sign that the card will really die very soon).

For another $30 you get some better performance, shown below. The 7770 is by all means a good card, but the 7790 was released a year afterwards, intending to bridge the gap between the 7770 and 7850, so if you can afford it, it could be a nice bonus. To help you along with your pc building, I've made a parts list of what you chose, with the cheapest retailers for each part listed. I'm assuming you're in america, but if you're not then I can make another one :) Link

  • Advantages compared to the 7770 GHz Edition
  • Higher effective memory clock speed 6,000 MHz vs 4,500 MHz
  • More than 30% higher effective memory clock speed
  • Better floating-point performance 1,792 GFLOPS vs 1,280 GFLOPS
  • 40% better floating-point performance
  • Slightly higher memory bandwidth 96 GB/s vs 72 GB/s
  • More than 30% higher memory bandwidth
  • Significantly higher memory clock speed 1,500 MHz vs 1,125 MHz
  • More than 30% higher memory clock speed
  • Higher texture rate 56 GTexel/s vs 40 GTexel/s
  • 40% higher texture rate
  • More shading units 896 vs 640
  • 256 more shading units
  • More texture mapping units 56 vs 40
  • 16 more texture mapping units
  • More compute units 14 vs 10

thanks dude. i only saw this now, lol.
i live in portugal, that list is almost identical to what i had in mind: 7770 instead of 7790 (musch cheaper here) and 8gb kingston instead of patriot (cheaper).
i don't mind playing in medium settings the latest game, and my monitor is only 1440x900, so this will be a big improvement in pc for me.

Darn, Pcpartpicker has an option for spain but not portugal :\ Well if the 7770 is much cheaper, then there's no point paying loads more for only a small performance gain, so go for the 7770, same with the ram and any other stuff. So yeah, looks like a good set of parts, have fun with it!
