Looks like another version of Steam.

From what I can tell it seems primarily made up of indie games and what's nice is that the site is in English but the currency is for the country you are in.

Interested to see if anyone knows of or uses this, as opposed to or together with Steam?

If so, how is it and what makes it better or worse than Steam?

Here's a link if you want to know what I am talking about: http://www.desura.com/

Thanks for the feedback, I personally didn't even know that this existed.

I do use it, of course. They own the Indie Royale Bundle together with indiegames.com. Best thing about them is that their application is mostly optional and they nowadays also offer many games DRM-free with direct download options. This also means that there are almost no problems with "Offline mode".

I dont like the Desura Client...it is not so good like the Steam Client...the UI from the Desura Client is bad too...hope they improve much things!...

But i like Desura in its own way because it supports many Indie Devs and they release alpha/beta/crowd funding games too(like Zomboid, the first and only game i bought at desura, rest of my list is from humble bundle and royale and such sites)...

Desura is better as Steam because of its fokus for Indie Devs...Steam is better because...its from Valve and since near 10 Years on the market ;) ...and my gamelist is fukkking huge >.< cant change, and desura offers no AAA Games :D

Yeah I also have way too many games on Steam and the thought of having two clients for gaming bane's my soul, but on that note Desura offers mostly indie games I have never heard of, which Steam doesn't offer, and a lot of them are free! But yeah their AAA list isn't really what I would call AAA haha.

It's basically a non-DRM version of Steam* and, therefore, better than Steam. Unfortunately, it's not as mainstream yet but, then again, that's what also gives it its charm. It's more popular with people into indie games and mods and it's a lot easier for developers to get their games listed there than Steam. In fact, alpha and beta versions of games are listed so that people can help developers fund and release their games.

*Officially it calls itself "DRM agnostic".

I use Desura on my second computer since it already supports Linux. They used to put Desura keys in the Humble Bundle until Desura decided to create the IndieRoyale. According to the Humble Bundle support, it was Desura that stopped supporting the HB (not the other way around), which seems to have been a very bad decision.

I didn't buy anything directly on Desura - just the HBs and 1-2 IndieRoyales. The Linux client runs pretty stable on ubuntu. However I think I will abandon it completely when Steam hits Linux.

I love Desura; I far prefer it to Steam.

One of the main differences between the two is Desura's origin from ModDB means it is designed to find and manage mods very well. It also helps you to interact with game developers whereas Steam takes the approach of abstracting the developers away. Aside from that, here are some points for comparison:

Advantages of Steam

  • More high-profile games in their catelogue
  • Cloud support ready out-of-the-box

Advantages of Desura

  • Has all sorts of good games that couldn't get accepted on Steam for some reason or another (Unepic springs to mind).
  • Prices are shown in your own currency (without that $1=£1=€1 nonsense).
  • The client is optional. You can start games directly without needing the client to start up.
  • Client is much more responsive than Steam.
  • Games start instantly - by contrast Steam makes me wait 3-12 minutes while it is "Preparing to launch" my game.
  • Offline mode works every time.

Disadvantages of Desura

  • The default client theme is very nice in places, but needs work in others.
  • If you like achievements, you might find many games on Desura don't use its achievement API.
