I know exactly how it feels. You play the game for 50 hours, you love the story, then you got distracted by something else and when you return to the first game you're all like: "Who are these guys? Where do I need to go? What's the plot again?.. What sidequests am I on?" "I have no memory of this place" © And then you either start all over or just dump the game. Happened to me a lot :(

lol, exactly what heppened to me.
Happens all the time though. 80 % of my console games I tended to somehow stop right before the end. Still haven't finished Star Ocean 3, Suikoden 5, Wild Arms 3...

I used to have Suikoden 2, but gave it away. While aware of the prices it can sell for, I sent it to go to a friend interested in the game. Certainly beats collecting dust on my shelf.

Since PS2 is backwards compatible with PS1...so many options. One that always stands out to me is Parasite Eve. Love love love that game.

I loved that game, but having bought it from a local rental store, I was never able to finish it because there were scratches on the disk that effected the end of the game :(

I never finished mine either. About a year after getting stuck, I was able to transfer my save from the memory card, convert it to a PSP save, do the same with the game (since my PC can read a scratched disc better than an old PS1), and started it back up.
Then realised I had forgotten everything that had happened, and had no clue what I was doing or where to go.

Haha, yeah there's never any way around that. Come back to a game you left 3 months ago...and who are these people? What are the controls? Then give up :P

Know that feel, that's why I turned to use FreeMcBoot.

Nah, USB stick. It's a bitch to get games on it, since every time it needs to be defragmented 100% and that takes a lot of time, and then some games just plain won't start up. Plus, pre-rendered videos are almost always stuttering really hard, and the load times are somewhat longer than from disc reading. But there are options for external drives and even hard drives from your PC if you connect them through LAN, but I never went into that.

I'm lucky, I have two network adapters, with three hard drives full of games.

I owned the PSP game but never got around to it, and same with the PS2 game.

That is your own personal opinion. All of the games there are highly rated titles, though I admit to hating Final Fantasy XII and the Persona games.
I also hate Dragon Quest VIII, despite being a fan of older games (I own 1 - 6, 8 and 9, as well as several spinoff games). Does that mean it doesn't belong in this topic?

Onimusha Series, my personal favourite was Dawn of dreams and 3

Last I checked, most of that series is action games, with one fighting game and one SRPG (that being for the GBA).

So many to choose.
Other than thoose already mentioned in this topic:
Wild Arms 5
Pretty much every single GUST game (Atelier Iris 1-3, Mana Khemia 1-2, Ar Tonelico 1-2)
Dark Cloud 2- build your own cities and change history
Dragon Quest V was fantranslated so as long as you get your hands on jap game you should be ok to make yourself patched copy... although easier way is to just buy it on Nintendo DS :P
You did not mention if you like trpg but if you do you just have to play Front Mission 4 (officialy released) and 5 (fantranslated)
Devil Summoner 1-2 and Digital Devil Saga 1-2 are other great spinoffs of Shin Megami Tensei series (most well known spinoff is Persona)
Valkyrie Profile 2 Silmeria- not your standard figthing system but good game
I prolly missed few but thoose are just from top of my head

Of all those already cited (which all all great games) I'd say Mana Khemia was my greatest surprise.
Not only is the game good, but the constant refreshing feeling by adding new mechanics all along the game was just perfect.

Persona series. hack is nice too but it does get tedius at some point (much like your normal mmorpg would :P)
but persona series is something really unique and well worth playing, imo ofc :)

Action RPGs
.hack://IMOQ - IMOQ stands for Infection Mutation Outbreak and Quarantine which are the tiles in the Tetralogy. What should you expect? A great soundtrack, great story, but a hit or miss combat system. Unlike other Action RPGs you don't gain skill as you level up, you gain them by equiping diffrent weapons, also the combat isn't really fast paced it's rather slow.
The story is you play an MMO called [The World] with your classmate named Orca in game. You both do a dungeon run together, but things go wrong and you experience something abnormal. You later find out he becomes comatose and decide to unravel the mystery of what happened and see if you can help him (and the others who have become comatose) by searching [The World] for clues.
Kingdom Hearts - Pretty well known, if you haven't played it please do so. It's one of the stronger Action RPGs on the system. Don't let the fandom creep you out it's a really good game. Play 2 if you want more.
Turn-Based RPGs
Dragon Quest VIII: The Journey of the Cursed King - By far one of my favorite games on the PS2. First off the Dragon Quest series is very simplistic approach when it comes to story telling so don't expect a fleshed out story like something you'd find in Final Fantasy or the Tales of game, this does not mean that the story is bad, it's really great. You'd be surprised how great the story is despite it being simplistic.
Everything is well presented in Dragon Quest, the graphics are bright and colorful, the soundtrack is amazing, the story as said above is great, and the battle themselves have a lively feel.
There's really not too much to say about the story without spoiling it.
Tip: ALWAYS CARRY 2-3 CHIMERA WINGS AT A TIME
Final Fantasy X - Final Fantasy X while not being the best in the series in my opinion is still a game with playing.
Mechanics are really simple, the sphere grid is what makes the game stand out from the others. My biggest complaint about the sphere grid is that you can't really take advantage of it until near the end of the game which gives you the illusion of freedom from the start. Other than that it's a solid entry.
Final Fantasy XII - First of all screw the people that hate this game. The uninformed call this an Action-RPG and that this isn't a "true" Final Fantasy game. This a load of poo and you should ignore them. The game is turn-based game and is a Final Fantasy game.
One thing I really like from Final Fantasy XII is that you can make your character do anything you them to do. Want to make Balthier specialize in Spears and learn white magic? Possible. Want to make sissy boy Vaan the tank with black magic? Possible! This is all due to the licensing system in Final Fantasy 12 where you have to unlock equipment to wear and magic to use (And you have to buy them, you're only unlocking them to be able to use them.), but it's still great.
The story is what I like the most, it's not your standard "welp there's a badguy so it's up to me and my underage friends to save the world!", it's more "mature" story. Soundtrack is one of Final Fantasy's best and graphics are great.
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES - You're a teenager with the power of awaken demons to aid you in battle called Personas. You're transferred to a school where you meet people who are also Persona users. You find out there's a 25th hour that only Persona users can experience called the Dark Hour and that's when monsters called Shadows appear to attack people (who are frozen in time inside coffins that appear during the Dark Hour). People who are attacked by Shadows I believe get apathy syndrome which is exactly what it sounds like. The source of this is believed to be your school which transforms into a shadow infested tower which your group dubs Tartarus.
Gameplay is pretty simple. In the dark hour you mostly go to Tartarus go up the floors as much as you can get in battle with Shadows and level up. The Personas are based on mythological, religious, and sometimes historical figures which is a common thing in the Megami Tensei franchise (Although outside of Person they're called demons). Outside the Dark Hour is pretty much a dating sim where you get to know people and if you max out their affection you get to fuse a strong Persona. Oh that's one thing I forgot to mention the main character can gain and fuse personas unlike your party members.
Sountrack and graphics are great
Xenosaga trilogy - The spiritual prequel to Xenogears.
Episode 1 - Great, everything is done amazingly. Story, graphics and music.
Episode 2 - Lots of the people who worked on Episode 1 left and Episode 2 shows that. For some reason they went with realistic graphics which does no work out well, the battle system is pretty boring, story is what matters here though and that's somewhat boring too.
Episode 3 - Have not played it, heards it's as good if not better than 1, surely better than 2.
Terrible RPGs to avoid
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time - Do not let people fool you this is a terrible action RPG. It's looks cheap, the story is abyssmal, the plot twist in the game is considered one of the worst plot twist in video game history, combat is decent but that's not enough to redeem a terrible game. Do not play this game. It's an insult to Action RPG games.
.Hack//G.U. Trilogy - Edgy characters, very predictable story, literally no character development which G.U is supposed to emphasize. It's a sellout, there are better Action RPGs to play. Avoid this crap.
Games I'm interested in playing
There you go. If you'd like to know more about a game or somethin just reply here. I kinda got lazy since I wanted to rush this to play a game.

FFXII is excellent, but if OP's playing via emulation they might want to check out the translation patch for FFXII IZJS, the Japanese re-release. Makes a good game even better.

Shin Megami Tensei: Noctune
The best JRPG's on the PS2 in my opinion.
