I guess Turkey hasn't featured much in the games or it hasn't in the games i have played. I know mostly as Ottoman Empire in RTS genre. Some of the old versions of İstanbul which is also known as Constantinople while it was a Roman city featured in some games. I believe first Assasin's Creed has it as a location but not sure it has been really long since i played it.

There is Jalopy,

Just a blocky non-representation.
Kabus 22, Turkish made, game is in istanbul,

Again a non-respresentation in a distopian future.

I misunderstood the question and was ready to rant about turkish gaming media embracing german studios whose founders have turkish ancestry. I was gonna say "Mount & Blade is from Turkey" but this is not it.
I think: Fortunately, Istanbul is represented a lot in gaming and movies. Unfortunately almost all of them suck.
Comment has been collapsed.
There are decent games from Turkey like Monochroma and Remnants of Naezith too but yeah we are pretty much represented as a location which would make a great GTA city imo and with our history in other games.

I think modern Turkey or Istanbul is kinda misrepresented in most art forms. I see Istanbul as one of most multi-cultrally rich metropoles in eastern europe, not as glorified Islamist city which has some haram on the street(!).

Nepal: It is featured mostly on games with some kind of mystic/adventurous vibes. Those games include the Himalayan and it's cultural aspects like mountains, temples, stupas, player-flags and "Yeti".
Far Cry 4 (2014): This game can be seen as the game that is heavily influenced by Nepal and its cultural/ethnic groups residing mostly in hilly and mountainous regions.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (2009): Depicts Kathmandu Valley, Newari cultures.
Overwatch (2016): Contains a map titled Nepal.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (2018): Contains a multiplayer map titled "Elevation".
Need for Speed II (1997): Contains a track titled "Mystic Peaks". That was one of the hardest track for me.
Other mention-able games are
Tomb Raider: Legend(2006)
Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings (2009)
Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures(1994)
Spider-Man: Friend or Foe (2007)
Lara Croft:Relic run (Mobile)
Asphalt 9: Legends (Mobile)

I can't think of too many representations of Australia beyond Mad Max, so also post-apocalyptic. I suppose there are some racing games that use iconic Australian locations, including World Rally Championship events. The iconic outback and tropical north have been represented in a couple of maps in theHunter Classic, published by the same Swedish software house that developed and published Generation Zero. That game also has a Swedish map - Hemmedal.

I'm from Buenos Aires and I say kill em all!
As you might have guessed, we're always a target for terror/alien attacks. Or a haven for ex-nazis. Come to think of it, both are actually true in real life. I mean just regular terror attacks, not aliens. No aliens attack that I know of.
However, in an absolutely not shocking twist, our own government is performing terror attacks on gaming. In this case a 13yo won 600kUSD in a Fortnite tournament and they took a 270kUSD cut just because his passport says that he's from here. So yeah, I hope the bugs send that asteroid our way any time now.

Slovenia: cricket noises
I guess we have 2 maps (one was in CS one is in PUBG) that were based on Slovenia, but that is literally everything I can think of.

I'm supposed to travel to Slovenia in May for a youth meeting (unless it gets cancelled due to the Corona panic). Glad to know I can expect nothing!

I hope you will have a nice time here then if it doesn't get cancelled :) We might not be featured in many games but it is supposedly a beautiful country or so people say (looks like a normal country to me :D ).

There was a Štanjel map in COD:UO.
Wikipedia page also lists BF1, which I assume has the Isonzo front.

Štanjel out of all places? o.O
Huh I didn't know we had a wiki page for that :D

Bulgaria doesn't exist as far as anyone not from Eastern Europe is concerned. :P
But if it does get name dropped in any way it's always as a stand-in for Russia as "generic foreign bad-guy land". Y'know- cuz "all of Eastern Europe is Russia".
(What annoys me the most is that it doesn't even have a Civ in the Civilization series. It's not like the country's name predates most Western European countries or anything...)
Comment has been collapsed.
Civ is superficial and Bulgaria doesn't exist in pop culture. Why risk and make a game about a country no one knows when you can make a game about vikings or ancient Rome? (this one is more about games in general, not civ specifically)
Besides we have vikings with horns, boob armour and other things. I don't think they would have made an accurate Bulgaria (or any other lesser known country. Who has time to do research?), it'd be some kind of a parody. Something like "Bulgaria? That's basically Russia, right?" or "Ancient Bulgaria? So basically ancient Rome, right?"
Comment has been collapsed.
They made Hungary, so while kind of speaking against myself, I think they could have made Bulgaria too/instead? Though... throughout the history Bulgaria was mostly under someone's reign, that may be a reason for less visibility overall.
Plus, while it's certainly good, they opened up a lot towards non-european nations I think? ( haven't really played them past 3 yet :| )
Comment has been collapsed.
Wow, thanks for bringing it up :) I don't own civ 6 so I didn't know it has Hungary, but that's a perfect example of what I had in mind but didn't mention last time.
As I said civ is rather superficial and paints every country with broad strokes and goes for stereotypes. It's easy to show difference between, say, ancient Rome and China. European countries share a lot of history, and the difference are more subtle. Besides in the past borders were totally different: Austrian Empire, Austria-Hungary, Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Czechoslovakia, and others. So it's not always easy to make these countries feel different with unique units and buildings.
Hungary has hussars as unique units (didn't several European countries had them? But I guess since they originated in Hungary it's justified). But there's no Austria in civ 6. And in civ 5 there's Austria (with hussars as unique units), but there's no Hungary. So when a country splits into two or more, who gets to keep unique units? All of them? Then they don't feel unique anymore.
Comment has been collapsed.
I think Hussars are Hungary-originated and then they possibly became more wide-spread in Europe as light cavalry - even Poland's winged hussars were modeled after them.
Regarding Civ 5 Austria and Civ 6 Hungary - Austria's leader is Maria Theresa, who was "the sovereign of Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Bohemia, Transylvania, Mantua, Milan, Lodomeria and Galicia, the Austrian Netherlands, and Parma. By marriage, she was Duchess of Lorraine, Grand Duchess of Tuscany and Holy Roman Empress." It is a weird situation as it seems that Hussars were linked to the ruler, not to the country of Austria. With Hungary not being present in Civ 5, and hungarian nobles literally swore fealty to Maria Theresa in 1741 - their support meant her keeping her throne while her dominion was being threatened by many sides, and she made some pretty serious laws in favor of Hungarian people and language. ( Also, according to wiki 35k hungarian hussars supported her in the War of the Austrian Succession.) Maybe with a different Austrian ruler it would have come out weirder, but looking after the story properly - her having hussars make a lot of sense!
IMO having Hussars for Matthias Corvinus in Civ 6 is just a lazy solution, and you're a lot more in point about it not feeling unique than you think. Matthias had "one of the earliest professional standing armies of medieval Europe" which is the legendary Black Army of our history. ( Highly skilled mercenary army, disbanded after his death because noone wanted to pay them) I think they would have made a lot more sense regarding the ruler.

Argentina. The only game I can remember that referenced my country is Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, on a mission set near the Iguazú Falls; it had a jungle-ish setting that one can say was almost accurate, but the enemies talked with a caribbean accent that just put me off the whole level.
Also, when playing Grim Fandango with spanish voices, while Manny talks with a clear mexican accent, the bad guys have a (try-hard) argentinian one.

The setting for AC2 and AC brotherhood so that's nice.
We have a map in CS:GO.
Almost always a faction in ww2 strategy games with fast vehichles and nothing else that's good.
Ferraris in racing games are omnipresent, sometimes there is also the monza racetrack.
Oh and ofc mafia.

As a German I certainly find the, uh, 'nazi aesthetic' a tad overrepresented in videogames. (And since games are not considered art, like, for example, movies are, any games featuring swastikas have to be censored or are outright banned here lol. Laws are fun.) I get that they are (depending on the game, quite literally) an easy target, because it's so easy to dehumanize them. And I don't mind that this aspect of my country's history is use in games per se, I just get tired of the plot running into nazis ever so often (it's ruined some of my fav shows too, when the big bad pulling the strings turns out to be yet another nazi, ya dig?).
That's not to say that WWII era is the only kind of representation Germany gets, but it's the most common. Aside from maybe, sports games, soccer in particular. But I just can't think of any recent game I've played and enjoyed that made me say "fuck yeah Germany". (And of course, except for soccer time we're not allowed to have national pride lmao.)
Hope this didn't come across too ranty lmao. Sometimes I envy the ability to feel patriotic, other times I'm glad I don't feel that way because it might as well lead into the extreme. I mean, in general, I don't pay too much attention to the actual country a game map is from unless there's some tactical meaning behind it for the gameplay itself, haha. But I definitely appreciate broadening my horizons with games from and taking place in a variety of countries!

We do make a lot of games in many different genres here though. It's just kind of weird that so many games that actually take place in Sweden has this particular setting! Don't we have anything more interesting? Not even Vikings? (I'd love a game set in the Great Power times with a Sabaton soundtrack lol)
Comment has been collapsed.
I think it's nostalgia for a lot of devs, plus modern day Sweden would make for a pretty boring setting for a game (well, I guess northern Sweden would make for a decent survival game).
There have been a few games set in Sweden that are not post-ap though, like Unravel, Midvinter and such. There was also a series of adventure games that took place in Sweden, but I can for my life not remember their name.
There are also some strategy games that deal with the time when Sweden was a major power. Pike & Shot has Sweden as one of the major nations, and there's an entire campaign dedicated to Gustavus Adolphus (Gustav II Adolf), and in Wars of Succession the Great Northern War is one of the two major scenarios. Also, Empire: Total War has Sweden has a major natioin.

Let me start off by saying that I'm from Sweden. If any of you have ever wondered, the "pannkaka" in my name comes from the Swedish word for "pancake", because that's my favorite food. Actually, I prefer to call myself "spökpannkaka" (ghost pancake), but since most websites don't recognize ö as a letter, I usually become spookypannkaka instead. (And I won't call myself spokpannkaka, because that's nonsense)
But that wasn't what this post is about. Recently I've been thinking a lot that damn, why do so many games place Sweden in a post-apocalyptic setting?
We have Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden, which is based on the Swedish role playing game with the same name, and developed by a Swedish studio. I haven't played it but I'm assuming that's where the game is supposed to take place based on that and some funny references.
We also have Generation Zero, which is set in 80's Sweden in, that's right, a post-apocalyptic setting.
Recently I played Whispers of a Machine, which I guess isn't directly said to be in Sweden but it features typically Swedish names (with butchered pronunciation of course) and the town has signs that are in Swedish (skola and matsal for example). Aaaand it is in a post-apocalyptic setting!
Bonus: This is not a game, but Simon Stålenhag does some amazing post-apocalyptic Sweden art, and you should definitely check him out.
The users on SteamGifts are all around the world though. How is your country represented in gaming?
