Portal, which Steam was giving away on the 13th of May, 2010.
The first game that I actually bought was Strike Suit Infinity.

Frozen Synapse
I created my Steam account to help a friend get 10 Steam friends for the Steam hardware beta invitation. He gave me a Frozen Synapse gift as a small token of appreciation. Just went downhill from there ;)

My first Steam game was Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, waaaaay back in 2006. I activated the game, and never even played it! LOL! I never went back to Steam until last September when I activated my retail copy of Wasteland 2. And I haven't looked back since!
I did have Doom 3: BFG edition before that, but it was given to me by a friend (real life friend as well as Steam friend) and was just sitting there collecting cyber-dust.;)

A friend tipped me off that Portal was free, so I made an account and nabbed it back in 2010. Never played it (until last year). Left the account dormant for about 4 years, as it was a period in which I had kind of lost interest in video gaming, and kind of in life in general, actually. I finally purchased my first game in 2014, PixelJunk Monsters Ultimate for full retail as I absolutely loved the game on the PS3 and was intrigued by the prospect of it being on PC as well, preserved for posterity forever even if my PS3 bit the dust. It was that fateful purchase that turned me on to GOG, which then revitalized my interest in PC gaming because of their DRM-Free policies and incredible pro-customer philosophy. I bought an incredible amount of games from GOG at that time, and was loving their fun and inventive sales with all the games which were new to me at that point. My interest in video gaming started to get rekindled as I enjoyed participating in the GOG forums, which made me feel great since they were populated with fellow geriatrics still hugging their pixelated masterpieces of yesteryear -- and it was only a matter of time then before learning of the magic of bundles... at which point the floodgates burst open and... well, here I am with 1500+ games on Steam and 3000+ games in other places. :)

Total War: Shogun 2 - Oct 11, 2011
Came with the video card I purchased at the time, don't remember which one.
Only played it for 2 hours that very same day.

Like the title says, what was your first game on steam? You can find it by clicking your name in the upper right, account details, then view license and product key activation and scroll all the way to the bottom.
My first steam account was hacked by an ex and I never got it back, so I am not sure there. But on this steam account it was Skyward Collapse.
The very next day I got Psychonauts and Costume Quest.
GA 1, Let's Party! (At the moment, 449 entries vs 526 responses, wow!)
GA 2, Unexpected Guests? (378 out of 526)
GA 3, Uh oh, party invaded. (271 out 526)
