I'd either be apolitical with my roommate and political among my friends or online, unless you think losing an apartment or finding a new roommate worth it or it is part of a larger issue. You could always try to find some common ground even if you have different views on how it should be addressed (ex. poverty should be reduced, people should have their religious rights protected, etc). The problem is that you have to be metered and measured when you have a discussion because a lot of political debates tend to devolve into A. Misinformation/fallacies B. A fight for moral brownie points and/or affirming your lifestyle/identity C. Just outright disrespect and antagonism (ex. calling people libtards, bleeding hearts, nazis, rednecks, cons). There is a reason that many institutions are apolitical and bringing up politics on a first date is a bad idea.

My personal opinion:
If you are just roommates, just don't talk about politics, it's not that hard.
If you are actually friends, you are supposed to be able to fight to the death about this issues and the next day everything should be alright and ready for the next round. Friends are able to fight over stupid stuff and not get really angry, otherwise that friendship is not worth keeping and you should just move on.

A lot of brainwashing going on in the news and in schools these days almost all of it is misinformation, each side takes things the others say out of context and run with it,if you know the person your living with has opposing views its best to just not talk about politics with them,i could see if it was a best friend or wife or something but just some random person...No. As for myself i dont trust people enough these days to live under the same roof as a stranger but that said i would just leave politics off the table with the current political climate.
