So, today I just got scammed for the first time. Screenshot

Just opened my trade post last Friday and already get scammed. Man, I gotta be more careful.
Funny thing is, I already had a bad feeling about this. Low level profile, kinda high offer, and telling me a story about he's getting scammed (too bad I forgot to screenshot from the start). Knowing that, I still went with the trade, mainly because I feel even though I may be scammed, that will be a nice experience for me.

Part of it is also because of the excitement I get from my first big trade XP Stupid me.
The loss is not big by US standard, but it is in my country. It could pay my meal for a week with it. (I only eat twice a day :D)

Not that I complained much, but I just feel I need to tell my story to make me feels better. (it already is)
Well, what's done is done. Already reported him to Steam Rep.

Just need to be careful in the future. Maybe I should use middle man for keys in the future...

PS: You may notice I said I will record a video of the chat on the screenshot. Well, I did record it. It's not public since I haven't remove/cencored several private information from the video. For now it will be for Steam Rep Admin Only.

I tell you about two signs of possible scammer.

  1. They always, ALWAYS, ask you to go first.
  2. They keep using their rep as an excuse to make you go first, be it profile comments(easily made up) and/or ST rep(they usually take that from the person they impersonate).

I did one trade before with me go first since the other trader has hundreds of rep.
Though that successful trade blinded me for this one :(

That's not really how it works :)

high steamtrades rep > keys for gifts, gifts for keys, keys for keys...

If someone with low rep doesn't trust my 200+ rep, I politely remove them from my friends list and that's that, no reason to risk it (only 1 person refused to trust me so far... he had 5 rep and was acting kinda shady).

To be quite honest, none of this rep crap means anything to me. You can easily get a bunch of your pals to go on your steam/steamtrades profile and leave you positive rep.

Thats just me, but I don't do any trading, so it doesnt matter to me at all.

I'm sorry to hear that. There's one said never trust greed over common sense, while you in doubt, double doubt it again and ask to yourself is this one too good to be true deal? To be honest I had similiar problem too in the past, there's this one guy insisted for me to go first. It's metro last light (full price at that time) with something that I'm forgot (lower than metro last light obviously) and yes, it's one too good to be true deal one!. Luckily as I'm searched this son of bitch profile, someone shouted that he's scammer. Anyway what's done is done, cheers up ;D

When ever you have gift they have code , They go first every time , unless there Steam trade rep is like +100 and no negative.

If you have code they have gift ask if you can see the gift in the trade screen. if they cant show just tell them your not iterested in the trade , if they do show still be careful.

best thing to do is record the conversation like you have done. good luck in the future and do you have any other games up for trade?

As soon as an offer is made to trade Payday 2 for Darksiders 2 you should of known it was a scam. Never take into account any rep on anyones Steam profile either. Its meaningless. You thought you were going to get Payday 2 for a relatively worthless game and greed got the better of you. Thats what scammers try and take advantage of. 9/10 if it looks a great deal then something is wrong. Somebody that has valued there game that low is probably a scammer as people are greedy and always place some high value on what they own, but want what you own for near nothing ;)

And yes, I were really suspicious about that.
But you know, I was being stupid and shrug, "Meh, what the hell. If I'm being scammed, so be it." Maybe I was looking for the experience after all. Who knows. I still questioned my reasoning why I pushed my luck back then even though I already feel the scam :/

Ok, Payday 2 for Darksiders II? What? No one in their right mind would do that trade, sorry to tell you this but it was kinda your fault, not knowing that it was a scam.
Also, key ALWAYS goes first, doesn't matter the rep or anything else anyone says. Keys always first, never forget that.

Why key first? Just because you say you have a gift-copy doesn't make me sure you're not gonna scam me.

It's common practice that keys go first, unless in rare occasions one has a very high rep.

The gift can be shown in the chat/trade window. That usually shows intent of trading or at least that the tradable exists and is valid. They key can't be checked if it's valid until activated.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Of course not, but the gift copy can be seen by you, you know it exists at least. With a key you're never sure. I always go first when I'm trading keys, no matter what. And I always demand that they key goes first if I have a gift copy. I never got scammed this way, even though I've lost a couple trades but that doesn't matter. Key always first, no exceptions for me.

Man that was an obvious scam right there, he gave it away too much, biggest proof being to check his profile on steam for rep, never trust rep on steam. And always make sure the profiles linked from steamtreades are legit and link you to the proper account you are making a deal with.

Also the way he chatted most of the time looked too obvious, with all the ":D :) :D :D :D ;) ;D" along with the "fair trade friend". Never trust a random with this kind of wording.

Never, ever, trust profile rep for anything. Any negative rep can be removed and it's easy for people to make alt accounts to add to their rep.

You have to be very careful, especially when you're first starting out. I basically only had spare bundle game keys when I started there, but picked very carefully who to deal with and how the trades go down. Fortunately, I have managed to go without being scammed so far. I'm sure many of these have been said numerous times, but some tips from my experiences/paranoia-

Don't trust people who randomly add you. Always demand their ST profile, and check their Steam profile through it to make sure that they're the same person, not just the same name. Do this even if you've had contact through ST, since someone could have seen your conversation and decided to impersonate them.

Never trust rep on a user's Steam profile. The user has complete control of the content on there, so if someone posts something that they don't like, such as negative rep, it can be deleted. If a person flaunts this instead of their ST rep, be wary of them.

When dealing with game keys, know what games are/were in bundles. If a low rep user is trying to trade a game key that has been bundled before in one of the major bundles, there's a far greater chance of it being legit than if he/she were trying to trade a Payday 2 key.

If you're going to trade for game keys, only trade for ones that you will activate to your account. Do not trade for game keys with the intention of re-trading them; there is no way for you to verify that the key works without activating it, so trading game keys from a third party such as that is far more riskier than trading with a game key that you obtained directly from trusted sites, such as Humble Bundle and other bundle sites.

When what you're offering is a game key, expect to be expected to go first until you get more rep, if the other guy has more than you. Until you get more rep, try to deal with only people with a reasonably high amount of rep, with many games on their account. If a person has low rep and a low game count, be wary.

When in a situation where you're trading multiple game keys for their gift, a reasonable person will maybe let you do half of the game keys, then they send the gift, followed by you sending the remaining game keys. This can apply to many different scenarios, such as if you're both trading multiple items, be it gifts for game keys or game keys for other game keys; take turns doing one at a time in order to minimize potential losses.

If trading game keys for a gift and you're going first, check a person's inventory for the item that they're offering before sending anything. If their inventory is private, make them unlock it.

It's a common understanding that game keys go before gifts, but I disagree to an extent. Once you get high enough rep, if you have a game key and the other guy has low rep and a gift, he's going first.

If someone has negative rep on their ST profile, check what the negative rep says. Sometimes people don't understand what it's for, and will -rep people for stupid reasons, unrelated to their trustworthiness. If they're accused of being a scammer, though, make them go first.

If a person randomly adds you with no previous communication through ST, demand that they go first, regardless of their rep level. Moreso, if they seem to be in a hurry or are very pushy about doing it their way, don't do it.

If a trade is too good to be true, it probably is. Don't bite unless they go first.

Finally, if a deal seems shady and they aren't doing things your way, don't be afraid to walk away, even if it's for something that you really want.

All in all, do what you can to minimize your risk as much as possible, even if it means not going through with some trades. Good luck.

That was longer than I thought...
