Every now and then, the topic of anime recommendations comes up. People's tastes vary, of course, but there are a lot of SG users who watch a lot of anime, so long lists of excellent titles are sure to follow. What we don't usually delve too deeply into is why certain titles are worth watching. I thought I'd broach that subject.

If you could pick only one, which anime (movie or series) surprised you most with its quality? Whether it was the story that traveled in unexpected ways, the characters which were unexpectedly real, or the message which was unexpectedly deep, this anime surprised you by being on an entirely different level. It not only entertained you, it broadened your understanding of what the medium could achieve. Tell us which anime surprised you, but more importantly, tell us why.

For me, it was Sword Art Online. It wasn't until the last, frigging episode that I finally realized I'd been missing the point entirely.

I had heard other people recommend it, and I had read the blurb for it, but it had sat on my "to watch" list for a long time. When I had finally gotten around to viewing it, it seemed to be pretty much what I expected. "Yet another action-oriented anime.* Guy fights stuff; guy gets stronger; guy becomes a hero. Oh, and throw in some females for the romance angle. It was OK for what it was, but the pacing was a bit uneven for an action series, and the second season wandered all over the place. "They seem to have turned this into a joke," I thought. "How many cliches and fetishes can they stuff into the remaining episodes?" I pretty much wrote off the entire series as a 'sellout,' and continued watching only to get to the end of it. I sure am glad I did, though, because it turns out I was totally wrong. Judging by the feedback of some others, I wasn't the only one, either.

SAO is not an action series. Nor is it a fantasy series, either. To be honest, it's not even 'entertainment.' Sword Art Online is Art, in all its uncompromisingly critical---and often uncomfortable---examination of the human experience. SAO is a deep, penetrating look at the meaning and depth of interpersonal relationships through the lens of online gaming. What does it mean to play a game? Where is the line between who you are online and who you are in real life? How does virtual reality affect the real relationships we forge between ourselves and other people? Does it even matter? To put it even more bluntly, what is the difference between the real you and the person you are online? Is there one?

These are questions psychologists have been discussing ever since the birth of the internet. Before that, a written letter was considered an expression of who you were, an extension of your personality. With the introduction of internet anonymity, however, all of that went out the window. SAO explores this subject in depth, exploring the entire breadth of human relationships. This anime is so much more than 'entertainment.' I highly recommend you check it out.

I don't really get philosophical nor do I think hard about things I watch.
Typically most things I watch surprise me, even if only a little bit, the 1st time watching, ;)
If I like it I watch it, if I don't I give it a try at least.
5 words are pretty common descriptors in what I usually watch, Mecha, Kawaii, Bishoujo, Oppai & Harem ..., not sure why, lol.
Some will agree with some choices & some will disagree.
Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Witch Hunter Robin, MD Geist, Patlabor, Tenchi Muyo (Ryo Ohki/OVA universe), Please Teacher, Mouse, High School DxD, Sekirei, Working, Arpeggio of Blue Steel, Birdy the Mighty, Macross (& Robotech), Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet, Invader Zim, Initial D, Is This a Zombie, Immortal Grand Prix, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, Inuyasha, Akira, Wings of the Honneamise, Chobits, Kite, Vampire Hunter D, B Gata H Kei (lol), Voltron ..., this list could probably go on n on.
You could try Anime roulette, you may find something you like.

Okay i was scrolling and reading comments through all the comments.!

It took a while but i am unable to choose from two: Number One Position will be DBZ (I think a guy commented that) and the Second is Death Note.

All know the king of anime is DBZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ :D (The whole dragon ball series)

But i will recommend you Death Note - This changed a lot in me. The shortest anime i know consists of about 37 Episodes (18 mins per episode) will teach you how this world works....how brutal, shameless, how down a person can go for just their ego and pride. This anime is love. <3

The main characters come up with strange and pecuilar ideas. Everytime they know how to get out from difficult situations. No sense to compare this anime with trash like Tokyo Ghoul or Mirai Nikki. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is done otherwise and better.

Amazing story about teenage terrorists. I would remove every scene with a character named Five(really, there is no reason she should stay in this anime), but overall that was great. Especially the ending, a little unexpected.

firstly..i'm not an anime guy
secondly...does the anime of sao have that plot twist at the end? like the manga does?
3rd...not sure about the anime, but the manga of Gantz at the end went so deep that you could've seen adele rolling in it
l.e.also sora no otoshomino manga end was deep, but i also don't know if they have reached the end with the anime(more like the movies.. firstly it had two anime seasons and got an anime movie that i didn't saw so i can't say to what pertentage of the story it could reach, but the anime is more for fan services)

The Gantz anime finished before the manga was completed, so they made up their own ending that was a real cop-out. Shame really.

The art and concept were great, but the lack of explaining things made an awful lot of the anime feel like one giant deus ex machina, and lessened a lot of the emotional impacts.

OH. "Red Garden".
That one surprised me because it actually had noticeable character development, though one of the characters doesn't really show it as much as the others. There is also an OVA episode that gives you an "after the story" story, where the characters have all reinvented themselves based on the things they learned (and subconscious things they imprinted on), which acts as a fun sort of footnote to the events of the series. The reinventions aren't necessarily all positive either.

A tough call in this one was whether to go for the dubs or the subs. Subs has the bonus of voice actors fully unafraid to vocalise fear / terror / rage, which really enhanced some early scenes. The dubs however let you track things easier, because a few times there are arguments where mutliple people are talking over each other.

Um... well... I don't really watch animes with the intend to find some "deeper meaning"... Like with games, I try to find something that is "fun".

The anime that "surprised" me (accidentally the first one I watched) did so because it redefined humor for me. It was just really funny all of the time. It very rarely took itself seriously and when it did, it was usually just so that the next whacky moment would be all that whackier. Then the Manga proceeded to be even better, lacking the romance focused filler that animes tend to add and being all about making you laugh. Maybe it starts a bit slow around the first few episodes/chapters, but after they're done introducing all the characters it's just one whacky adventure after another.
I'm talking about Ranma 1/2, btw.

So, if you're searching for deeper meaning, I don't think you'll find it there. The anime is not intended to be taken seriously. But if you're looking for some good old fashioned comedic fun, then it's a really nice place to find it. :D

Anyhow, would you say Sword Art Online is funny? A.k.a., should I, while searching for humor and fun rather than the "deeper meaning" in the end, watch it? :P

For fun, I would go with Cromartie High School. I'm pretty sure they deliberately erased any hope of finding a deeper meaning.
It's about a school for delinquents. Weird delinquents.
Also monkies, robots and Freddy Mercury.

Looks promising. :D

I don't mean that I completely hate deeper meaning or anything... it's just that I tend to ignore it in favour of comedy. So in general any anime that has comedy in it and doesn't go into fits of tragedy is good for me. ^_^

I recommend Baka No Test, then. Tons of comedy, and you can skip the deeper meaning (which is there) without any detriment to your enjoyment.

If you still want to watch SAO, stick to the first season. It's more "entertainment" and less "psychological analysis."

Ooooh, that one indeed also look interesting. I'll put it on The List™. Hopefully I'll also even start ticking stuff off The List™ since I suddenly got he urge to watch animes. (It works as a stack, so I'll start with this one. :P )

Well, I checked out SAO lately since you recommended it. The setting for the first half is quite serious (see, people, that's why we don't want games getting too realistic- the moment it dips into "you die in real life" it kinda stops being a game) but it still had some bits of comedy here and there... and some bits where it fell into full out emo tragedy territory (cough Episode 3 cough).
All in all, not too bad, I guess. The second half of the season seems be trying to lighten it up slightly and I'll most likely watch it to the end since I prefer not to leave stories unfinished. Thanks for the recommendation. :D
(Now you need to go check Ranma 1/2 out and tell me if you liked it or not, muahahahhaaaaaaah!) Naah, just kidding. :P

Narutaru also gets a notable mention for having the most unfitting opening theme
Seriously. The anime is really not as upbeat as this. Quite the opposite.
(trigger warning, for later developments)

The manga wasn't finished when the anime was released, so a lot of wounds are left open. I really should get around to reading the manga-

Didn't like SAO that much, preferred the books, however a series that completely took me by surprise at how much I liked it would be Nisekoi, I was reading the manga and I found it entertaining so I cheched the anime and loved it. Other anime that took me by surprise was Hyakka ryouran, didn't expect that much quality on an ecchi anime

All time? Sora no Woto. Was told it was basically K-On!, which is a complete lie. Oh, it does have it's comedic slice of life moments, and it does have a bunch of girls with a musical theme, but that's about where the similarities end. Not that K-On! is bad or anything, it has it's place, but Sora no Woto definitely blew me away when I watched it, and even managed to stay just as good on a second viewing. It just sells its aesthetic so well, the themes are powerful and well delivered, and it doesn't hurt that the show is gorgeous to boot.

The biggest surprise for me this season has been Kekkai Sensen. I was expecting some generic shounen battler with some nice art by the PV, but to say nothing of how amazing the battle scenes are, the show is anything but generic. All the characters are well, well, characterized, and they manage to string out bits of pieces of a background plot behind the insane daily happenings of Hellsalem's Lot quite well. It's a crazy ride and I can't wait to see where they take it.

Okay, HERE WE GO!..
The most surprising anime that I've ever seen was Gintama. It was already mentioned in this thread, so I wouldn't repeat what is so special about this anime.
Mushishi was surprising in terms of how it succeeds to catch your interest while lacking almost any action or complex story. Pure work of art, and still thrilling to watch.
WataMote, however, surprised me, when a typical slice-of-life story turned out to have some very untypical design decisions. The artwork of the series really caught me.
And... Naruto: Shippuuden xD After I didn't manage watching the first series, I was quite surprised, how actually... watchable was the second.
