Every now and then, the topic of anime recommendations comes up. People's tastes vary, of course, but there are a lot of SG users who watch a lot of anime, so long lists of excellent titles are sure to follow. What we don't usually delve too deeply into is why certain titles are worth watching. I thought I'd broach that subject.

If you could pick only one, which anime (movie or series) surprised you most with its quality? Whether it was the story that traveled in unexpected ways, the characters which were unexpectedly real, or the message which was unexpectedly deep, this anime surprised you by being on an entirely different level. It not only entertained you, it broadened your understanding of what the medium could achieve. Tell us which anime surprised you, but more importantly, tell us why.

For me, it was Sword Art Online. It wasn't until the last, frigging episode that I finally realized I'd been missing the point entirely.

I had heard other people recommend it, and I had read the blurb for it, but it had sat on my "to watch" list for a long time. When I had finally gotten around to viewing it, it seemed to be pretty much what I expected. "Yet another action-oriented anime.* Guy fights stuff; guy gets stronger; guy becomes a hero. Oh, and throw in some females for the romance angle. It was OK for what it was, but the pacing was a bit uneven for an action series, and the second season wandered all over the place. "They seem to have turned this into a joke," I thought. "How many cliches and fetishes can they stuff into the remaining episodes?" I pretty much wrote off the entire series as a 'sellout,' and continued watching only to get to the end of it. I sure am glad I did, though, because it turns out I was totally wrong. Judging by the feedback of some others, I wasn't the only one, either.

SAO is not an action series. Nor is it a fantasy series, either. To be honest, it's not even 'entertainment.' Sword Art Online is Art, in all its uncompromisingly critical---and often uncomfortable---examination of the human experience. SAO is a deep, penetrating look at the meaning and depth of interpersonal relationships through the lens of online gaming. What does it mean to play a game? Where is the line between who you are online and who you are in real life? How does virtual reality affect the real relationships we forge between ourselves and other people? Does it even matter? To put it even more bluntly, what is the difference between the real you and the person you are online? Is there one?

These are questions psychologists have been discussing ever since the birth of the internet. Before that, a written letter was considered an expression of who you were, an extension of your personality. With the introduction of internet anonymity, however, all of that went out the window. SAO explores this subject in depth, exploring the entire breadth of human relationships. This anime is so much more than 'entertainment.' I highly recommend you check it out.

Panty & Stocking. I don't really like anime, but I found myself drawn to this series after seeing how the animation style is pretty unique for an anime. But what really got me hooked was the humor and the many references to western culture.

I'm watching death note, episode 34. All of my friends says that the end of this anime is surprising. Hoping for the best, currently loving it.

When you finish I recommend looking for a GIF where light teaches Matsuda how to swim, not going to link it because spoilers, but it is really good. (google light swimming gif for it)

Tbh I didn't find the ending of that one surprising at all. If you enjoyed the anime though, I'd also recommend Psycho-Pass, Code Geass, and Darker than Black.

You need to read last manga chapters. In the anime they changed the ending. The outcome is the same, but done better in the original.

For some reason I missed this thread, but eh, might as well still post here. Better late than never, right?
Anyway, I don't want to mention some of the well-known favorites, so I'll go with a truly hidden gem. An anime that I have never seen anyone talk about: Cossette no Shouzou
This is a short but very pretentious anime/OVA (even the translation is Le Portrait de Petit Cossette). While it is pretty old (2004), it is truly amazing in terms of aesthetics due to all the various styles portrayed (knowing art history definitely enhances the viewing experience, by the way), and a well-matched soundtrack from the one and only, Yuki Kajiura. It may be hard to understand it if you only watch it once, however. I can almost guarantee that you'll understand more if you watch it multiple times.
Well, I don't want to go into much detail regarding the story so that I don't spoil something, but you should have a general idea of what it's about from title and my short description above. Also, I would recommend watching it at night because, well, while I don't think it deserves the horror tag it has, the atmosphere is definitely much better in the dark.

With that said, I now have the urge to rewatch it, so I'll probably do that tonight (After all, it takes like 2 hours to watch it)

Toradora. Got me right in the feels, that one. Pretty short, only about 13 episodes (plus some crappy shorts that noone watches) and characters are really likeable. If you're loking for something funny, i Reccomend Baka and test, its one of my favourites in terms of outright silliness. If you like OTT adult humour, I'd recommend Seitokai Yakuindomo. School Rumble's pretty good too. Recently I've been watching Oreimo too. All these animes are relativey short, shouldn't take you more than a week to complete any of them :D

Toradora was really good, i recommend you watch it. Oreimo gets... well pretty wierd towards the end its one of those things where you see it coming straight away or it catches you completely off guard. in my case, it was the latter Again, Crude and over the top (as well as freaking hilarious) humor is very abundant in Seitokai Yakuindomo, though the episodes are pretty spread out (last episode was released back in march, next one isnt until september)

Also: VVV Terra Formars, as mentioned below. Its really good :D VVV

Pretty sure Toradora is 24 episodes, not 13.

EDIT: Checked, it's 25 + some specials.

Since it hasn't been said yet, I' ve been watching such a good one in the last two days:

TERRA FORMARS

It's basically a science fiction anime.

Some animes make you addicted after several episodes. I GOT ADDICTED TO THIS ONE AFTER THE FIRST 10 MINUTES.

Animation Quality: 10/10

Awesome example

Another amazing example

Plot: 10/10

Planet Earth resources are ending, we tried to colonize Mars, we sent a type of plant there and a bug, a cockroach, which evolved and became humanoid and hostile. Human developed a surgery that would make them have insect traits and therefore holding some of their insect base powers. Very interesting. No matter what you'll think by reading this, IT IS NOT CLICHÉ AT ALL, BELIEVE ME.

Characters: 10/10

Good development and backstories, nothing cheesy, some extremely badass.

Overall opinion:

Amazing anime, brutal fighting scenes, lots of blood, not recommend for children, extremely interesting plot and development. I totally recommend.

I take it you were one of the lucky people that watched it after the uncensored version came out ._.

I personally couldn't watch another minute after this scene. Maybe I'll give it another shot.

Yes, indeed, the version I'm watching It is the uncensored version, so fucking awesome ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ

The gore is quite brutal and one of the coolest main aspects of this anime, taking it away makes it impossible to watch.

So I decided to start watching this... It's fucking amazing :D I saw the first episode and started the second, I was like'this is kinda slow...' Shit gets real, really fast, blood everywhere, totally awesome. Also SPOILER ALERT... KINDA I love how they just don't give a fuck about killing people off in the first few episodes: Oh they're a main character, they'll be fine for 10 episodes or so...3episodes later, 4 people you thought were going to be main aspects of the story are dead. Brutal...

Trigun immediately comes to mind, before I saw Trigun I thought anime was just pervy cartoons.
Trigun you could say made me understand that not all anime is the same and that I could like anime.
Full Metal Alchemist is another I liked it had a very strong story and interesting lore.
Hellsing I would probably say is my favorite anime,it also is probably one of the most violent,I really liked everything about the show.
Hellsing taught me that anime could be both gory and story rich, while having plenty of plot twists.

I'm nine episodes into Yuuki Yuna is a Hero. I didn't expect to both laugh and be brought close to tears by it.
It looks like a slice of life magical girl show, but having seen Bokurano, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Madoka Magica, I was suspicious of the anime the entire time. I kept waiting for somebody to be brutally killed off or for the universe's awful reality to slap the characters in the face. Without spoiling anything, it eventually became clear to me that this was exactly what the anime was hoping for. It played me for a fool and I loved it.

It was many a year ago but My-Hime Surprised me by actually making me teary eyed Q.Q which seems to never happen! Berserk the end of the anime left me in a daze for days! X) Steins gate I underestimated but after watching, I have seen it in its entirety 5 times. XD I feel surprised though every time I find an anime I like as much as some of my favorites XD Even animes which other people didn't like so much like terra formars. Or the series that are super popular like attack on titan X) I love it all!!!
! I tend to switch between binge watching anime, to binge gaming back and forth though XD

C : Money of soul and possibility control

It is half about financial market :D half about your life values. Animated by Gonzo with fascinating fight scenes.
I would say that it is unusual and is surprisingly deep for an adventure anime. And it isn't that much mainstream.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

Wasn't watching it too closely caz the story seems fairly simple, then out of nowhere it turned out to be the most (and only time) I've cried from an anime since I saw Clannad: Afterstory.

For anyone interested here's my (mostly) complete list. The scores might seem kinda low, but anything 4 and up I considered worth watching and 6 and up I'd probably recommend.

Spice and Wolf. I never expected to love an anime about economics so much, but the sheer personality sells it. Too bad there's no continuation in sight for that.

Just one? Oh that is just unfair. But, on any given day I'd probably suggest Darker Than Black. The story was so interesting, but the characters even more so. I knew from the first moment of the first episode that it was very good. And TALKING CAT! :3

Because untill half a year ago, i didnt think i wouold get a more favorite anime then DragonBall Z, untill i saw this perfect made anime wich desnt have a complete crap story line buildup like other anime's.
This is the reason i dislike anime's like mirai nikki and 99% of everything els.
