So, like the title says, I just got L4D2. I actually traded it for Wings of Prey which I got from crafting my first coal (yeah, that was incredibly lucky). Anyway, I traded and unpacked and then it hit me- what if it's the infamous censored version?

So in light of Steam servers being jammed right now the game is downloading at a very poor speed even though I have a fast connection and I'd like to know as soon as possible whether I screwed up or not:D

So gentlemen, how DO you know, besides playing the actual game?

Oh and btw, I googled but couldn't find a clear answer. Thanks!

You already unpacked it? you'll find out when you play it, then.

In all seriousness, tho. The censored version really only exists in Australia (maybe some parts of Europe). So unless you live there, chances are you got the regular, uncensored version. The difference is that the uncensored has blood EVERYWHERE. The censored has very little, and it doesn't splash up on your screen, either.

If an Australian gives you the censored version you will unpack a censored version and not the regular one...

If a German gave it to you it will also be a censored version, if so write to steam support, they will uncensor your version of l4d2.

I thought only games with a (De), (Aut) in the title etc... was censored. In l4d2 i think its wayne where u buy it, if l4d2 is not a low violence version in ur country u can unpack it easly (its uncensored then.) but if u live for example in germany or something u have to use a proxy and re-login in ur steam account and turn it under stettings in "english". then download/install the game WHILE use a US proxy 100% uncensored then. Sorry for bad english.

No, if you get gifted a censored version, the it wont become a uncensored one even if you live in a country where it is not cut.
Uncensored gifts of the games dont become censored when you unpack them in a country where you only can buy it cnesored...

In short terms...censored edition stays censored, uncensored stays uncensored :P

Well this is mighty complicated. I thought it says whether it is or it isn't censored in the game's description or something.

I think that the gift in the inventory should have shown "Left 4 Dead 2 (AU)", other than that i think you might be able to bypass it if that was the case (hopefully not)

Oh, okay. It only says L4D2 and the guy that gifted me it is from Turkey. Well, let's hope for the best.:)

Since people have no idea what they are talking about here goes:

If you get the censored or uncensored version solely depends on WHERE IT IS BOUGHT. The "logging in through proxy and download there" thing DOES NOT WORK ANYMORE. (That was fixed years ago. No idea why people still bring that shit up.)

Where games are censored and if they are is different everywhere. L4D2 is censored in Australia and Germany.
I'll explain using Germany but the same stuff applies to Australia.

You live in Germany and buy it Retail or from Steam or get it gifted from someone from Germany or Australia: Censored
You live in Germany and get it gifted from someone who does NOT live in Germany or Australia: Uncensored

You live somewhere else and get it gifted from a German or Australian: STILL CENSORED
You live somewhere else and buy it somewhere else or get it gifted from someone somewhere else: Obviously uncensored.

This is true for ALL censored games. The place where it is bought is important, not the place where it is activated.

I hate this half-knowledge everybody seems to throw around today.

Click on the "ACCOUNTNAME's Account" next to your minimize, maximize and close buttons in the top right corner.

You will see a list of all your game subscriptions. If it shows Left 4 Dead (DE) or Left 4 Dead (AU) or whatever you are unlucky and obtained a censored version. If it just says Left 4 Dead 2 you are fine.

I'm quite surprised about the fact that hardly anyone knows about the account/purchase history? It always shows you whether you have a censored version or not.

It only shows L4D2, thank you guys. I do know for the purchase history, but I didn't know that censored version show (AU) or (DE) next to their names. Thanks:)

Australian here: This is why I haven't purchased L4D2 myself, that and there are games I want to get first before it.
Also it's possible there will be law changes here in the next couple of years which would allow the uncensored version here. Valve has made statements which seem to suggest that Australians will get the uncensored version on Steam if the said changes happen. Of course how Steam would handle people who have already purchased it won't be known until it happens (if it happens at all). Another complication being under Australian law the censor version can be sold to people who are 15 and over but the uncensored version if allowed would only be allowed to be sold to people who are 18 and over.

When you play the game, ask your friend what do they see in their steam pop-up notification.
I get a pop-up of "XXXX is Playing Left 4 Dead (censored)" whenever my Australian friend is playing.

I'm in Australia. I got an American friend to gift me L4D2 and it's the uncensored version. All my Australian friends did this. If the person who bought the game lives in a country where the game is uncensored then you will be fine.
