Recently I told my friends about Steam Gifts. Everything was cool until I started sending them links to my giveaways. In school they were like: "LOLS why do you buy games and put them on that site hahaha", "You're wasting your money idiot". I'm not angry or anything. You know how friends act to friends. They're friends.

Have you ever experienced something like this?

The funny thing is, that one who laughed at me the most won 3 giveaways on about 200 entries. He didn't make a single giveaway. Lucky bastard.

Giveaways:

Adventures of Shuggy $0.01

Skyrim? $1.01

edit9: Third, big giveaway starts in few hours. I also cleared my post a bit :)

75CV here, never won a giveaway either. My friends tell me the same thing. I've given away over $200 (actual money I paid, not sale how SG does it) worth of games to my personal friends and those I know online. I've only ever received 1 thing in return. This is okay, but everyone thinks I'm retarded or something, but really I just like the satisfaction of giving things to others.

Lol people laugh when I say that I buy buy games for myself. I imagine what would happen, if I told them I buy games for others. (Though I only spent a few euros for steamgifts)

It's my little secret that I even use steamgifts, so no one laughs.
I do, hovever, have a certain rule involving buying games. I decide how much title is worth for me and I never pay more, so usually I wait for a price drop or a sale. My friends laugh at me: they buy the game at full price if they can afford it or download a copy if they can't. So I usually play a game year or two after everyone else did.

They're pirates. They already got Skyrim from torrents. They only buy games to play online (like BF3 or BO2).

Too bad we can't gift BF3 anymore :/
Oh well, let's change Skyrim to Call of Booty: Black Oops 2

One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself. Although it has its origins in religion, and I'm by no means a religious guy (oh hell no^^) it's a simple rule and the basic of (more or less) societies... if you want to win gifts you have to give away gifts (obviously it wouldn't work any other way). It's as simple as that and it's a good character trait to have

Well, friends tend to laugh at you for any possible reason. Sometimes this reason is "meh" or even made up and they make fun of you for a minute, but sometimes this reason is so hilarious they'll laugh at you for ages.
If it's their problem, like in this case, show them how many are registered in this site, how many gifts you could win, and people with way more cv than you. And then make fun of them :D

d00d! I have exactly the same problem! My games laugh at me, too, just because I give my friends away to strangers for free. Homefront is especially annoying as it likes to give me a wedgie whenever it walks by.

I guess you need new friends. Nobody in my friends circle would laugh at someone else because they pay for content. Then again, we are all grumpy old people, so maybe that's the reason.

When I showed Steamgifts to my buddy he joined and won 5 GAs in like a week, while I had estimated: 6.5 and real wins 2 while having given away 12 games. He said that the ratio between my wins and my GAs just shows I have a generous heart and he didn't mean it in an ironic way, so that was kinda cool compared to what your "friends" tell you.

What are these things called "friends?" And what do they have to do with gaming!? Sounds like something that just gets in the way. I would suggest deleting them as soon as possible.

They're online and real life friends I go to school with. We live pretty far away from each other, so it's not so easy to meet. We can't drive a car yet.

That's one of the things that defines you as a good person in now-a-days society and these "friends" of yours are the type that will most likely leech of you sooner or later, if not already. So if you end up not buying games to giveaway, they will most likely drain your pockets in some other way. Expect to see alot of people in the future that will use you for their own interests, discarding the way you feel and your opinion about something.

I myself am like that aswell, i'm too damn generous and i shouldn't be 80% the time because people don't even diserve it. Each time i buy something i end up thinking if i should buy something for X person i know or something to giveaway here, making me spend more money in the end. Not to mention when i usually go out with friends i pay the fuel most of the time aswell and sometimes even pay a meal. It's part of me and it's like i will never stop doing this untill i'll loose my mind completly, it's probably the only way to fix this permanently.

And before anyone says "you are being a sucker", yeah i know this, but it's not like i always gave a damn about money myself, i know it's essential to live but it doesn't make me any happier, if i buy something i wish for, i'm happy for 15 minutes then i get bored instantly, people i know, when influenced by money, are all crazy happy. So if money doesn't bring that much happiness to me, might aswell try it with others, and the closest ones are my friends, yeah. If i had a girlfriend i would be broke pretty much, given the way i am. Plus i have no expectations for life myself other than work and spend money untill i end up in a grave, i don't plan on forming a family of my own, not in a sh*tty society like this, it's my option not to bring another human being, that is a part of me, into this world because i do think it's not worth it as from what i experienced, and it's bound to get worst sooner or later.

This thread is now officially a vent thread. Yay me!

PS: Overall don't feel bad, you might just want to stand up to them if they continue to make fun of you because of the things you do. Might aswell and go on point above the usual and make fun of them yourself by mentioning something that will shake them a little bit, that will teach them not to mess with you, if you let it slip many times, you will end up being a target and you don't want to be a target of a social group, it's one of the worst things that could happen with someone. You could still be friends if you are the target, but it's like as if you end up being bullied by words and act like the group's clown, being there for other people's pleasure without them knowing crap behind a person's life, that's one thing to avoid.

I'm Italian and in my opinion, whole world is a country, there are generous people, selfish people and normal people everywhere, in Poland, Italy, Germany, UK, Ireland, Spain, Greece, France, Iceland, USA, south america, China, Japan and ecc.. I won't say you to change friends...friends are friends with their pros and cons, I think they laugh or: A) because they are envy...not because you buy some games for others but maybe because you don't buy those games for some of your friends. B) Or more simply because it's not in their mind do certain things. Don't mind, =P laugh with them about everything else.
