Good Morning All,

I need your expert advice on advising me which laptop is best bang for my buck. Pretty much what happened is the laptop screen broke. I'm looking to buy a laptop for the family to use.. I have my own which I use for work, gaming and other things.

This laptop will only be used for checking emails, web surfing, etc. nothing too demanding, probably little to no gaming on it as well. What I am looking for Is a good quality laptop that will last a while and not crap out 1 year in :P

These three are the best priced ones I could find. Please keep in mind that this is in CAD$ (1 link will show not in stock but the price was similar to the other ASUS one, give or take $50-$75)

I'm at work so won't be able to respond much (sorry). Hope you all are having a great Monday so far.

Thanks for all the help!

I'd go with #2. If you go cheap, go cheap all the way.

  1. I'd rather avoid AMD procs on laptops; CPUboss says not too much of a difference performance-wise between #1 and #2
  2. All their Windows will turn into Win10 standard anyway, so go with the budget one
  3. If you have a bit more money, try getting one with an i3 proc or an SSD drive (get minimum128 GB tho, since Win10 has problems installing on those 32SSD/500HDD hybrid drives)

My two cents, take with a grain of salt since I'm no tech guy.

I was thinking #1 or #2 as well. My Lenovo that I own has an AMD processor and Its just not good as Intel :P

I'll keep this in mind thanks.

for the use it'll have an SSD is pointless, an i3 not really needed either

Either/both will make daily standard usage a lot snappier, which is important IMO. YMMV.
I was only pointing out that either/both will be a better expenditure of his money rather than those with a "better win version" or "dedicated GPU".

I tend to agree - an SSD can make a LOT of difference. I won't build a rig without them anymore, even budget rigs should have one as low-priced as they are now.

+1 An i3 can last you longer and provide better performance than a Pentium at everything OP specified. Also, an SSD is essential for the uses OP specified, it makes everything faster in a way

Uhm

a laptop for the family to use

This laptop will only be used for checking emails, web surfing, etc. nothing too demanding, probably little to no gaming on it as well. What I am looking for Is a good quality laptop that will last a while and not crap out 1 year in :P

Why don't consider a tablet ?

Tbh I'm not a tablet fun, but for that kind of use, tablets are nice, easier to use on a sofa, probably cheaper, if your parents aren't that good with pc it's probably better.
I found an iPad Air for 300€ and I bought that for my parents, best gift I did, definitely better than a pc\laptop for them

I'm not really a tablet guy and neither are my parents. They suck with technology. I think they would prefer a laptop since they are familiar with it and find it easy to use for web surfing, etc etc.

Than maybe a cheap laptop (entry-level but pls no acer-full plastic sfuff :c ) + a cheap ssd is the best choice

For me this one seems the most safe and best bet.
The CPU won't be have any heating issue. Not heavy use, then a decent dual core is enough. http://ark.intel.com/products/82103/Intel-Celeron-Processor-N2840-1M-Cache-up-to-2_58-GHz
5400rpm discs shouldnt be a heat issue either.
The gpu is integrated and won't be a heat issue either. Is enough for standard use.
Has 1 USB 3, though the 5400rpm won't make much use of it by itself.
2kg should be fine for home use
1366x768 is meh/ok for 15''
It's not an Acer, so that's a plus.

For light gaming should be fine. Will run Half-Life 1 at max settings I assure you. Will run light flash stuff as well, heavy flash stuff depends on gpu. For non-demanding use the cpu should be fine as well.

"Crap out in 1 year in"
This depends on 2 things. Construction/design quality: If it has awful cooling like Acers have/had, then blame the builder. Other than that it all depends on the users. My PC has 2 years now, surely doesn't run like new but isn't too far from it. I know ppl whose pc craps out in months. Why? People don't know what they're doing. Best rule for noobs is: If you don't know how to install or do something without being 200% sure you ain't letting crap in, don't do it by yourself.

Also, if it runs well on 8.1 don't bother with 10, save the trouble.

For laptops, I'd say intel>amd and nvidia>radeon due to power consumption and heat.

Thank you for your input.

I have no intentions of upgrading to windows 10 :P I was actually even thinking of downgrading the Win 8.1 to 7 cuz I hate 8.1 :P but I guess its not my laptop!

You are correct on the Inter over AMD. My Lenovo has AMD and that thing can get pretty hot when I game. The power consumption is decent so far though.

Anyways i'm rambling instead of working LOL. thanks again
