Have you met someone you first got to know through Steamgifts in real life? (Someone you knew before SG does not count)
Wouldnt it be better to meet steam user instead of steam gifter? Everybody is a steam user, but not everybody is a steam gifter.
And no, why I should meet some leecher? I only meet steam users in rl.
Comment has been collapsed.
Better? That's a totally different question, but not what I'm asking about. I've met 4-5 people from my Steam friends, but only one from SG. Many people might join local Steam groups and meet people from there. Steamgifts is more random, and after seeing one thread with... 3 or 4 (can't remember) people from SG meeting in Germany a while ago, I have wondered how common it is, so I started this thread to check.

What makes gifters leechers?
Dont know, tell me. You said that, not me.
Comment has been collapsed.
I know what I wrote but I was asking you what exactly makes you think I mean all SG users are leecher? Thats would mean Im a leecher too and then
make you better than someone who gifts games here
would not make any sense. Why I should flame myself? -.-
Comment has been collapsed.
Ok, although I'm sure it serves no purpose, here's what I understood...
It sounded like you implied a regular Steam user is better than a "gifter" and also better than a leecher, so that at least puts the so-called gifters (which I guess are Steamgifts users) and leechers into the same category. Going by this, I asked why is not gifting and being a regular Steam user better than gifting, since you said you would only meet Steam "users", in the sense that they're not part of Steamgifts.
If that's not clear enough, we can just drop it, it's not such a crucial subject to debate here and now anyway. :)

I don't go out to meet friends that often either (hey, I don't have that many friends, most of the time when I'm not alone I spend with my girlfriend), but I tend to at least a few times per month end up in places with a lot of people because I like music... which means going to shows/clubs, and for many years I played in a few bands myself and go to meet many people because of that. So I might appear to be more into meeting people IRL than I actually am - it's all that damn music's fault, otherwise I would be great at not meeting people ;)
It was nice, we share a few common interests we talked about, and Fnord taught me some things about beer. I'm a total noob when it comes to beer, and Fnord is quite the connoisseur, at least compared to me (don't know if he would call himself that). We had a beer or two and chatted for maybe 1-2 hours, had to go after that since I had plans with my girlfriend (she stopped by a while).
We haven't met up since then, but I think that's more because of us not living in the same city.

Well, I guessed you woudn't call yourself that, had to even add it in the post :D But didn't you meddle in brewing yourself, or have friends who does it (and from that know a bit about the process)? I might remember wrong.
I agree that it was quite tasty!

I don't wanna meet any of you generous bastards! :D

but they are so generous, they would probably pay for all your beers!

I've never met anybody from the internet IRL...I'm still thinking it's all in my mind
JK
I'd be open to meet and discuss, but I'm not in a nomadic time of my life so if anyone's passing through Montreal...

No, and not particularly interested. I'm not comfortable meeting/speaking with people in person, it would probably result in a one-sided super awkward conversation.
Comment has been collapsed.
Now that sounds great! 2x awkward silence so we can just stare at each other in a slightly distrusting manner while planning on ways to defend ourselves or flee if the other tries to kill us, among other very unlikely situations.

Argentina might be a bit tricky. How expensive are plane tickets there? Here in Europe, flying is really cheap (if you're willing to fly at awkward hours). I went from Sweden to Croatia to meet someone from SG, and a one-way ticket there cost me about as much as two pizzas.

Promoting a company?? →_→ Now I see why your airfares are so cheap!!1! :D

Thanks, that's a great pic! Describing what Fnord and Zelghadis said the best way :)

Yeah, Rijeka was really nice. The person I went to visit thought I was crazy for just walking everywhere, but I thought Rijeka was a wonderful city to just wander around in.
Here's a picture from up at the castle. As you can see, the weather was not nice that day (or at all that trip, it rained constantly :P ). It was quite a climb to get up there, and I think I managed to pick the worst route up, becuase when I got up I could see a far nicer way to one side, and there were two workers at a cafe who looked at me like I was insane, climbing up that steep slope, while being completely drenched due to the rain. It was worth it for the view though.

Its about hunting good deals ;) usual plane tickets are still hella expensive, but more and more often you can hunt good deals with cheaper lines like Ryanair, Wizzair, eadyJet etc. In last few yearse and fiancee travelled big chunk of Europe - been to Sweden, UK, Ireland, France twice, Spain twice, Italy 3 times already and not once we paid more than 20EUR per ticket one way, with cheapest trip being 28 EUR for Poland -> Milan for 2 people 2 way, so 7EUR one person one way.
Comment has been collapsed.
WTF?! And that doesn't even get into how awesome the trains are for international travel!
I swear I sometimes wish I were European.
I might be going to Norway in August and two pizzas won't even cover the cost of checking a bag. :p
Comment has been collapsed.
They wouldn't in europe neither ;p cheap flights earn money other ways - for example with check-in luggage ;) you may buy a tocket for 10 EUR but check in luggage will cost you 25EUR extra one way. You want to sit next to your partner and not have seats associated randomly (with algorithm making sure you sit far away from each other)? Pay 5EUR extra per ticket. You want 5cm more of leg space? 12 EUR. You want a guarantee you will be allowed to bring your hand luggage to cabin? That will be 15 EUR. Then they will try to sell you stuff from catalogues on board over and over again etc ;p
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, the only one that seems annoying to me (and something I haven't seen before) is an extra charge to guarantee you will be allowed to bring your carry-on bags. But in general, it seems nice that you at least have the option to, say, hop on a plane as an individual with no checked bags and fly to a European destination for super-cheap. I guess they have to compete with trains?
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh don't get me wrong - I still do love cheap flights ;p They allowed me to start travelling across Europe, you just to have to keep in mind that what you pay for is not the same you pay for with classic carriers ;) But still - few years ago any travelling by me would be by train or car, I would only visit places in my country, eventually close places in surrounding countries, and thanks to rise of cheap lines in last few years I travelled to 12 different countries, some I visited more than once, if you can manage with all the shit you get while travelling with cheap line it opens a lot of possibilities for international tourism, even if just for quick weekend city-breaks ;)
They do not really compete with trains, as train infrastructure between different countries suck. You can easilly travel inside country, but it's hard to get from country A to country B. Also it's not really competitive if you look at times - the longest European flight I took was slightly over 4 hours, 4 hours is not enough toi get across most countries by train, not to mention travelling through several countries ;p Competition between trains and planes happens mostly with in-country flights - like flight from let's say Milan to Rome. There times (especially considering check-in, boarding, security check, getting to outskirt airport etc) and prices become more comparable between cheap planes and fastest trains.
Also as for prices - we are discussing promotional prices here ofc ;) Normal tickets in cheap lines will cost 40-100EUR (ofc still cheaper than traditional lines) depending on route, one way, but various promos are quite often. But again - here comes what is agreeable with you - as me and my fiancee are travelling for tourist reasons, usually not during season we are very flexible, we can take free time from work anytime with just 1-2 weeks notice, we don't have chioldren so there's no problem of them missing school, my mother in law is retired living in same city, so she can always take care of our cats, so we can look for cheap deals to buy tickets and model our holidays based on what nice tickets we manage to snipe. We do not plan that we gotta find tickets to London with exact dates from 10th to 15th March for example, we plan that well, maybe we will have some vacations in spring, then when there is some promo we think "is this place we want to go", "is these dates ok with us"? The prices on promo determine where we will go for vacations next time ;p Last time it was Midi-Pyrénées in France + Andalusia in Spain, but we have no idea what it's gonna be this time and when it will happen exactly ;)

I remember American friends/family (years ago) rave about picking up a Eurorail and travelling all over Europe on the cheap. I never heard about relative infrastructure or other issues, but that was a long time ago. My personal experience is limited to a train from Vienna to Budapest a few years ago (which was cheap, fast, and convenient) and a round trip flight from Toulouse to Paris, which also seemed cheap, fast, and convenient at the time (late 90s).
Trains aren't a very good option in the US unless you're, say, traveling up and down the northeast corridor (say, DC to Boston) or travelling from one big city to a relatively nearby big city.
I would have loved to be in a traveling situation like yours (engaged/newly married, no kids, nearby family to watch pets if necessary) and be able to pick up a cheap fare and travel all over the continent.
Where were you in the Midi-Pyrénées?
Comment has been collapsed.
Eurail passes used to be cheapest option years ago (before the rise of lowcost flight lines), especially when you were a student, but compared to current prices are not so worthwhile anymore, especially for adults. https://www.eurail.com/en/eurail-passes/global-pass Cheapest option for whole EU (5 days during 1 month) is 468EUR for Adult up to 942EUR for continuous month. Compared to price of tickets you can snipe on Wizz or Ryan sales it's not longer worth so much ;)
As for your trip from Vienna to Budapest - distance between these two cities is below 250km, so like distance between any 2 bigger cities in one country, and as I mentioned on such short distances trains do compete with planes, but if we are talking longer distances it's not worthwhile anymore timewise. For example going from Warsaw to Paris takes around 3h by plane (add 1h+ for checkin, boarding etc, add bus from airport it will be another 1h, so total +/-5h), by train it takes almost 20h. Longest routers in EU can take up to 2 days by train, while longest flights are 5h long. So like I said - with current lowcost prices trains and buses are not really worth it ;)
As for Midi-Pyrénées it was a smaller part of our journey (remember the talk about flexibility? buying tickets to Toulouse and then from there to Malaga ended up being cheaper than buying a direct tickets to Malaga ;p and we got some nice extra part of the trip ;p) - so we spent only 4 days in Midi-Pyrénées before going to Andalusia and Costa del Sol for 1.5 week, so in Midi-Pyrénées themselves we spent one day in Toulouse, 1 day in Carcassone, one day was a trip to Andora and one to Park Naturel des Pyrénées for very lite hiking. plus half a day fot organising rest of a trip and going to Spain ;p
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes, as somebody who used to take 18h train rides (from DC to Florida), I know how much one would rather be in a plane at that point! And I'm sorry to hear that Eurail isn't what it used to be.
Sounds like a great trip! I spent 13 weeks in Toulouse for work (spread out over 10 months) in 1998-9. I loved it, and loved Carcassonne as well! Other than the weekend in Paris I mentioned earlier, I made a day trip to Bordeaux and an overnight to a small town in the Pyrénées, but sadly never made it as far as Andorra or Spain.

Just adding to what zel said, they also cram as many as they can into a plane, which means that they've moved the seats closer than the manufacturer specifications for the plane. This makes them rather uncomfortable (and as a tall person, I've sometimes been forced to sit in such a way that I've had problems actually standing once the flight was over). It's nice that we have these cheap flights, but comfort is not included :P

Why sad face? Seville seems like a great place ;) I actually been nearby last November, Andalusia in general, just not Seville itself ;) Malaga, Benalmadena, Granada, Nerja, El Chorro, Ronda and Gibraltar - beautiful places you have really close to where you live :)

It's already hard enough to meet up long time friends. I rather find randomly on the road than an appointment. Or an appointment to be an activity(soccer, paintball, not just an appointment to chit-chat).
Plus never got involved enough with the community for someone wish to meet me in real life(and vice-versa).
But maybe in the future, who knows. Maybe we could have a steamgifts paintball competition. :D

Good question. Have you played GTA: Vice City? Essentially, in that game, there is a person named Paul Kent, who had an off-screen obsession with different types of peas.
Anyways, this obscure meme was picked up in the 14th century by a British man named Tom Swiggleboot, who in turn dedicated his life to making the term peapaul a culturally accepted term for vegetable fetishists. 681 years later and GTA: Vice City is lauded as the best game ever made and Paul Kent is in the hearts of many as the sexual liberator of his time.

Pfft! YOU FOOL! Everyone knows that Ryse isn't completely historically accurate!
Marius Titus is the cousin of Tom Swiggleboot. Read some books, ya nerd!!!! >:(
(Also, is Ryse worth the purchase during the sale? I've been interested in it for a while now)

I won Ryse here, so it was easily worth it. :D
I thought it was quite a good game -- great graphics, great voice acting, story was entertaining enough. The gameplay is a tad repetitive, but I found it fun enough, and did not feel I was grinding through the game... Some people criticize it for being short (it took me some 8 to 9 hours), but that is actually a good thing IMHO (it did not overstay its welcome). Also, I played with a controller, and it felt very natural to me.
In short: not groundbreaking, but a very solid game with huge production values.
And I see no mention of Tom Swiggleboot there! Wait, are you mixing him with Tomus Shacus Buttockus? Buttockus is indeed Titus cousin!

Nope, don't have that level of trust with anyone of this community to actively go a try meet someone. Even when i traveled.
it would be different, if by any chance crossed with someone at random.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeap- more or less the same.
Had some meetings with a forum for electronic music for example and it was great. But the community was also not that big and we more or less know each other and also talked about different things.
At this place I maybe know from a handful of people what games they maybe like (there are also 2-3 members that share more private stuff).
But nothing more tbh. At least for me, it's not like I have any bigger relationships to any other member.

heh, I visit Łódź at least few times a year (beside my mother my whole family lives in Łódź, even my sister moved out from our hometown and bought apt in Łódź, so all xmas/easter/hollow's eve etc are spent there) so yeah, I know this route quite well ;) If you don't get stuck at traffic in Łódź or Wrocław centre polskibus takes usually 3-3.5h, if you travel by car it rarely takes more than slightly over 2h ;) Just avoid travelling by train - they quite often have horrendous delays on this route. Like in last 5 times I travelled by train it was delayed 4 times and 3 times it was over 1h delay -.-

I do have a cringy story that I'll never talk about again. But it basically scared me away from meeting anyone again.
But I mean, I'd have a drink with someone in a pub, no problem. It's just that for the first meetup, I'd never actually want to preemptively plan something long term. A drink at the pub is simple. It can last from an hour to a whole evening.
But since I live in Estonia, it'd be hard to find anyone :D
Comment has been collapsed.
There were two Estonian users who met up and dated for a while.
Comment has been collapsed.
Now that's something I didn't expect to hear. I've only seen one other Estonian user on this site.
Probably for the best tbh. There's a reason I don't usually talk about my nationality and why I keep my profile's location as "United Kingdom".
Comment has been collapsed.
Why, is Estonia a bad place or something? I only really know it as a country from the Baltic region of Europe and part of the old Soviet Union. Pardon my ignorance.
Comment has been collapsed.
The country itself is lovely. I have no issues with it.
It's the people that tend to be online here.
Are you in an English community and meet an Estonian? Add them as a friend because it's the same country and expect them to be your best friend then.
Make sure that you speak Estonian with any Estonian in an English community. It's exciting because it's like a secret code that no one will ever decipher.
Also, make sure to add every Estonian community as your group in Steam. Otherwise someone might not realize you're Estonian.
Then, of course, make sure to let people know that you're from Estonia not because you're proud of its citizen, but instead because it's a relatively obscure country in their eyes and that's their main selling point as a person.
Make sure to try and teach someone Estonian, even if they don't want to learn.
There's so much more to be annoyed at, but those are the main things. I've met around 20+ Estonians. All have been like that. I've actually met an Estonian who thought I was a British immigrant. He did all of those things.
There are good Estonians out there, there truly are. It's just that they are completely outnumbered compared to the those fine specimens.
Comment has been collapsed.
So what I'm gathering is that most of the Estonians you have met online tend to be overly nationalistic and wrapped up in everything Estonian, including pushing it on others, and think that all Estonians should be the same way?

I've read some threads about people meeting up IRL, just wanted to check how common this is.
I met up with Fnord last year, and this autumn I'll probably meet zelghadis since I'm going to the city where he lives then (hey, am I only meeting Level 10 people? Don't mean to discriminate! :D).
How about you?
