Will you buy this?
For that price it's definitely worth it.
Already have it from the previous HL price.

I'd definitely demo it first, or at the very least watch gameplay videos first, if I was you.
I'm a fan of the developer AND an obsessive deck-game genre fan, and I found the demo I played to be extremely lackluster. Maybe it got better later on, since I wasn't able to play much of it, but yeah, from what I saw of it it was definitely not the depth you'd expect of a deckbuilder or the charm you'd expect of a Steamworld game. That's not to say I don't think it's playable, just that I don't necessarily see it being recommendable to anyone who already has reservations.
But again, that's based on only like 30 minutes of play. All the same, the story was as shallow as any other Steamworld game, the lore elements presented seemed disjointed, and the card game was overly simplistic (critic reviews term it "accessible", but also note "twists" as the game progresses; Given how the fun Steamworld Heist game overstayed its welcome with non-changing mechanics, I can't say I have a lot of hope for "twists" that matter, though; All the moreso since both critic and user reviews label the game as "overly repetitive".)
So.. yeah. Unless your "really dislike" is based on the mechanics of deckbuilders being too complex, I don't see this one necessarily being the best bet. :S

they had to put a cryptic card game in this otherwise super interesting game
You've got that in reverse, actually. Thronebreaker is the single player campaign component for the Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, with both being developed simultaneously (and both releasing in 2018, though for Gwent that was just a beta release), and with both deriving directly from the in-game Gwent minigame from the preceding mainline Witcher games.
In other words, they developed the mechanics first, and then built the rest of the game around it, so it's very much a game that wouldn't have existed without the card game aspect. So I guess the real pity for you is that they didn't just make a similar game detached from Gwent. Fans even pushed for that, based on the appeal of at least one Thronebreaker character- unfortunately, Thronebreaker's well known to have done far worse in sales than CDR expected, so probably not going to see them dipping into those waters again any time soon.
...Gwent's definitely one of the more obtuse examples of the card game genre, though, definitely'll give you that. x_x
Though if you REALLY want obtuse, check out Race for the Galaxy.
Releasing to PC with what has to be the worst tutorial known to mankind, it's a game that seems like complete garbage if taken at face value, given its underdeveloped UI and deeply non-intuitive mechanics. If you find someone to teach you the game, though, it's a pretty fun pvp experience.

Yeah, I was thinking about keeping on playing and skipping the card battles, but I very soon figured out that it's supposed to be the actual meat of the game and the rest around it is just decoration. I really tried getting into it, but I just found it not fun, not knowing what most of these cards did, barely an explanation for them either, or how to play, more frustration than anything, so I went ahead and uninstalled. :/
This Race fo the Galaxy thing sounds like my absolute nightmare. No thanks ;P

Easy buy at this price, already have it. This is just as well made as any other SW franchise game. I just wish the mid to late game didn't get as grindy with a certain gauntlet of back to back battles.
Also, if you like turn based tactics in 2D (like Worms), check out their latest game: Steamworld Heist 2. I loved the first one.

I'm so happy they made a sequel to Heist. Steamworld Dig is probably their most polished game concept, but at a personal level I'm most fond of the physics+TRPG gameplay of the Heist games (not surprising, though, given that I'm not huge on platformers to begin with, so it's honestly just a testament to the quality of production and appeal of concept that Dig won me over the way it did).
The only major flaw in the first Heist was that the mechanics never changed after the first few fights (an obvious outcome, given the unchanging combat mechanics and the lack of depth to both the RPG leveling system and equipment system), and that the game ran too long in light of that. Other than that, it was a great TRPG-meets-Worms formula, and everything I've seen of the new release seems like it'll be a lot more compelling to keep playing. Fingers crossed? If you get a chance to play it soon, do give me your impressions, relative to the first game. :)
