Okay, so let's get down to beginning. I never ever played ANY game from the Pokemon franchise. Never got the need. Also in the modern gaming times, even if I was more aware, I didn't liked jrpg games anyway. I could bear jrpg style, but, I never liked the idea of using only meta, instead of cool, cute pokemon. And tbh, most of cool pokemons are 1st evos. E.g. Dratini is way cooler than dragonite. I like poochyena over mightyena or many first evo stadium of most of the starters. I like braixen, but I prefer fennekin. I like snivy, don't really like serperior or servine much. They aren't bad, but I would feel really uncomfortable playing something I don't like. But never mind that. That's the excuse why I never played Pokemon fin the first place. But I would maybe like to probably try to change it. Yes, many hesistations and indecision.

So... I have a questions. Many questions.

  1. How does this all "we release 4 versions of one game" looks like. I mean, I know, they have different pokemons, like midday or midnight lycanroc being exclusive to respectively Sun or Moon. But... can You share pokemons from one version to another? And is there any way to get pokemon from previous generations, that are not in the wild in any of those versions? Like, I dunno, could I have dratini in Unova?

  2. How does those version looks like in a term of gameplay. Do I have to play those games separately? Or can I somehow mix them?

  3. How are the prices in a premiere release and after it? Do I have to buy 4 games for 60 USD? Or what? Cause it's horribly much. Even paying that for one game would be, not to mention doing it for 4 different same games.

  4. If there is anything else that could be helpful for newcomer, feel free to explain me more than I asked for.

I'm thinking, of course, about the gen 8 game. Sword/Shield or whatever. I own only Switch and have no other consoles from Nintendo. And bought the console for Smash only, but as I already got console, it would be nice to have more games, right? I have only 3 games now and it would be nice excuse to enter Pokemon games, won't it?

Also I have a question for more unconfirmed informations. Do You think we'll get Amie/Refresh-kind of minigame too? Cause for me it's even more important than the game itself. For me pokemons are not machines to kill, but cute creatures I want to pet. Gameplay is okay, I think. I'm not really that against jrpg style. Especially that I find the mechanics of the Pokemon very interesting. it's very nicely done. All those items to hold, abilities to have, nature to "bear", types to be and moves to chose. It's one hell of a very well done game. Cause no two pokemons are the same thanks to it.

Thanks for the answers in advance. I hope You will convince me to buy it xD

I'll answer based around Sword and Shield.

  1. You can trade between games of the current generation (8 for Sword/Shield). In order to move Pokemon from a different generation, you'll have to transfer it. Transferring is a 1 way process, so you'll move the Pokemon from one game to another. I assume that for moving Pokemon from Sun/Moon/Ultra Sun/Ultra moon will use the Pokemon Bank service as has been the case before. Though you'd find it cheaper to just trade with someone that already has the Pokemon you want.
  2. Based on the previous games, there won't be any gameplay differences between the 2. There will be at most, only minor differences in the plot, not enough to justify buying both for that alone IMO.
  3. In terms of Sword/Shield, you'll only need to get 1 unless you want to pay for 2 games. XD
  4. Don't get into the competitive gameplay if you just want to have fun. XD Feel free to reply if you want to ask me something else (or for a better explanation).

For the Pokemon Refresh, I don't think they'll remove it as Eevee needs that mechanic for one of it's evolutions, but they have done it before... As for the rest of those, they've been in the main games for so long (hold items were released in Generation 2 (1999) and abilities/natures were introduced in generation 3 - (2002)), I would be massively astonished if they were removed! =P

  1. So it's as I thought.
  2. This is also as I though it would be.
  3. The problem here is, there are exclusive pokemons I would rather catch than trade. But I will see.
  4. I rather like to catch my fav pokemons, than to tryhard. But would they be enough to enjoy the game and not be underpowered? Like using pre-evolution or weaker pokemon. Oh, and I don't like most of the shinies either.

Oh, I didn't mean to ask if they will remove hold items etc xD I only meant that for Refresh/Amie, cause that's what is very important for me.
I never played any games but I always follow news from Pokemon. More in a term of a pokemons themselves, than a mechanics etc. However I will be interested a bit more in the current gen. I'm currently waiting for any new info about gen 8. But they don't want to say anything D:

  1. Wait and see what Pokemon are exclusive to Sword/Shield and use that to decide which version you want more.
  2. It'll make the game more difficult, but not impossible. If you don't mind a bit of extra grinding, it'll be fine. Evolving Pokemon makes them stronger as the evolved forms have higher base stats, but it's not always the best to evolve them ASAP.

Ah, I misunderstood then. XD It's not that they don't want to say anything, they've only recently announced the existence for these games. With Sun/Moon, they announced them and waited a while before they started slowly flooding us with info... You'll just have to have a bit of patience. ;)

To expand a bit on the trading, there's also a built-in online trading service called the "Global Trade System" or GTS that's basically Have/Want matchmaking. You can put up your pokemon and ask for ones from the other games in return. You can also search for any pokemon and see what other people are asking for. When a match gets made, Nintendo's servers make the swap and send out the pokemon the next time you connect.

It's perfectly possible to enjoy any game in the series by itself. The main reason why you would buy a second game in the same pair is if you personally want to catch the version exclusive pokemon instead of trading for them. The second releases of the generation are inconsistent - sometimes it's a remake of an older game (Fire Red/Leaf Green, Heart Gold/Soul Silver, Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire), sometimes it's a sequel (Black 2/White 2), sometimes it's a remaster of the previous pair (Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, Ultra Sun/Moon). You generally won't miss much if you skip them, but there are more significant changes than you'd see between two games of the same pair.

As far as prices go, Pokemon games tend to hold between 50% and 100% of their value in the long term. You can usually save some money if you wait to buy when the next game comes out, but even the first game boy games are $15-20 today (MSRP was $29.95)

Oh, I didn't know it has online trade now. I thought it's only local.

I would like to catch them myself. But buying two same games just to do so is very uncool idea :/

So the GameBoy games are pretty expensive now, as they're so old now...

Well, It's hard to make the decission. I will see what will happen... I probably won't buy it anyway...

With online trading, there's also something called a Wonder Trade. You put up a Pokemon for trade and the server randomly matches you up with another person putting up a Pokemon for trade. You'll usually get rubbish Pokemon you can get at the start of the game, but you never know when a competitive player puts up their failed breeding Pokemon (Min/Maxing for the best stats). The GTS would be your best bet to get what you want though. =)

i only played the 1st two generations and loved it. played gen3 recently on my mobile (emulated) and the game has improved
watching the gameplay of modern games had me ordering a 3DS to play the rest of them.
although i currently like the game for its gamplay and less for pokemon (cant catch all 666 pokemons). exploring the new evolutions and moves is fun.
i would recommend to buy only a single game as they offer no change in gameplay. and as stated before you can always trade for missing pokemon. (we had it hard with the gameboy connections -_-)

To play for fun would mean to have all my fav pokemons. So this is the problem here. I don't need to have them all, but would be cool too.

It would be hard to trade any pokemon here. Not only because I don't know anyone who plays Pokemon, but in my country actually nobody plays Pokemon. Thanks to Nintendo, who showed us middle finger for 2 decades. I wouldn't care more if not for the Smash that I bought by accident in Germany. My uncle bought me two things that time. N64 + 2 games for 5 euro and another game for 5 euro. I don't know which one was with consolke, but games were Mario Kart, Smash Bros and Banjo-Kazooie. If not that, I would never be interested in Nintendo. Ever. I bought Switch only for Smash after all.

My problem is, that I really want to have few pokemons that I can catch myself , that would be probably in separate versions.

trading goes online worldwide. no need to know the person you aare trading with in real life. so you still have the chance to get the mons you want without playing the same game multiple times

You only need one game of a generation if you want to play for fun. Only collectors buy every pokémon game.
If you know another player that have the game, you can trade with them. Also it's the only way to complete your pokedex.
Pokémons that you get from trade have a boost in xp. This is a plus for training.

Every game have it's own legendary pokémon. You can choose the game that have the one that you like.

I'm not a collector. But I want pokemons from different versions. I like all three lycanrocs for example.I would need at least 2 games to have them all. And I also like xerneas, yveltal and zygarde. So this means few games too.

And this will be the case in gen 8 too, for sure.

For legendary Pokemon like Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde, they often have events to hand them out online or in stores. You'll have to wait for Nintendo to release them, but if you wait long enough, you'll get some of them that way.

For the rest, most non-legendary pokemon can breed, meaning that you can easily get multiples of them. People are very willing to trade those pokemon, because you can always get more. You'll easily find them on the GTS without needing a second game.

TO play fangames, I have to first play original games. Never in the reverse order.

just wanted to give you an not so much comercial driven alternative . then my advise is dont play two games of the same generation as they are the same games. dont expect any difficulty at all cause those games are for 7 year olds. i love the pokemon franchise but its all way to easy and storyies are never complex at all

As a Pokémon greenhorn, maybe Let's Go, Pikachu/Eevee would be just right for you since it's kind of designed for beginners who know Pokémon Go at most. You certainly can catch Dratini there. :)

I love Pokemon, I still remember how many times I played Pokemon Blue on my SNES with the Super Game Boy, and Gold was even more beautiful! I still love to play Emerald and Leaf Green on the GBA, unluckily I played only few times the DS ones and I don't know much about the new games but I still think it's an awesome franchise, it's so great to play them =)
So thanks from me too since I don't know anything about the new games, but I'd love to play them in the future!

You don't need to buy multiple games to have fun / get all the pokemon you want - with online trading it is fairly easy to get pokemon that aren't available in your game these days.

There are various methods for trading pokemon between generations. Generation three games and up (including the remakes and/or virtual console versions of the generation one and two games) are all 'compatible' although you may need older hardware to do it.

Just having a pokemon and having a competitive pokemon are entirely different things though. Almost any pokemon can be competitive as long as it has the right attributes. You will just need the right moves (and certain moves for certain pokemon are only available in certain games so that will likely require switching pokemon between games and consoles), the right IVs and nature (which can usually only come from a breeding program that will likely benefit from certain features in certain games) and the right EVs (which come from training your pokemon likely through battling and again may benefit from the pokemon being in specific games).

This is why I have 2 x GBA, a gamecube, 2 x DS, 2 x 3DS and every pokemon game. For the love of God don't get started with this bullshit...
