To be honest if somebody is small, ugly, not smart, have no friends and girl then i think games are not bad choice.
People are drinking, smoking etc.there are bigger problems for others than gaming.
I'm gamer.
Good luck with project.

  • Also do you consider that gaming addiction it actually a big problem ? For some yes.
  • Do you know people that have gaming addiction ? No
  • What is your opinion about technology addiction( social media, gaming etc) ? I don't like social media, they are bringing no good.

Hello from Italy, I have been playing video games on pc since before I could read, I play at least a couple hours a day, but in 25 years I think I lost cognition of time only a couple times (I think with Death Rally when I was young, and later some Elder Scrolls game... you know, one more dungeon, oh a side quest, oh I need to go to town and sell items, and so on).
I used to play with some friends but none of them is/was addicted.
Regarding social media, I don't use any of them. I think people are annoying sometimes, always watching their phone, even while driving, working or eating with other people.

Good luck with your study. I've completed the survey.

As for your other questions:
1 - As with every other addiction, gaming can be a big problem. Maybe a little less damaging in the short run than gambling, drinking or substance abuse but damaging none the less.
2 - I've known people with gaming addiction back in college but not anymore. Most of my friends or relatives do not play videogames.
3 - Social media is designed to maximize your interaction with the platform so it is definitely a cause of addiction. They are based on self-awareness, vanity, FOMO and amplifying your perspective on things. They also tend to reward negative interactions instead of positive ones.

I completed the questoinnaire but there were a few answers that felt a bit forced. For example, I do tend to stay up untill late but that isn't just because of gaming and putting it together with skipping classes/job/meals doesn't feel right (I normally skip classes cos depression, not gaming; when working I never skipped, although I did show up late a bunch; I eat when I'm hungry, kinda hate to do it because the watch tells me).
Also I'm into whatever can distract me, not just games, sometimes I stop playing for a month because I feel burned out. I still think I have a problem even tho I can stop, so I'm not sure if that's the best point to test.

Of course gaming addiction is bad. Same as all the other addictions. When it starts to affect your life, create problems with work and relationships its on par with drugs or alcohol. Maybe easier to keep under control and get rid of, but it can have just as bad of an affect as other vices.

I wouldnt say I am addicted - I do have a craving now and then, and can get lost in time when playing a new game that excites me (but the same can be applied to a book as well, or TV series or when getting work done is exciting).. I do remember that I did skip school and my grades fell a bit when I was 14 or something. I played a lot of Call of Duty back then. I was an awkward kid - not many friends, moved around - so got lost in the games.
But when started studies and working, filling my time with productive things pushed gaming out.. Same now - If I am occupied by something I might not play anything at all for a month or more. If Im without work or assignments I can just as well spend a week playing games if I dont find a better alternative..
But as I can control my time playing and have no problem with shutting my PC down I wouldnt say I have a problem as I enjoy my time playing the games.. its more like a hobby.

Technology addictions is way worse in my opinion. All this zombification by facebook, instagram and twitter. It creeped up on to us and we didnt even notice how addicted we all became. Its so time consuming and anti social (despite it being about socialising). I would definitely say I am addicted as well - I feel the need to check on my facebook, on 9gag, on my emails a lot. More then its necessary at least. And the biggest problem is clueless parents sticking an Ipad in the hands of a 4 year old and being happy they have no noise from the kid forgetting that the kids intelligence and brain power is put under a risk. And then we wonder where all the socially awkward, overly aggressive kids come from. With all those attention disorders, with problems at schools. We have become addicted to the technology and cant control it and we ruin our kids before they even learn to talk..

This is a huge topic and should be discussed a lot

PS. I answered your questions - good luck with your thesis (or whatever work this questionnaire is related to). Now Im off to "be addicted" to a book I am reading that I cant stop thinking about since last night

Tbh whenever people say I'm addicted to gaming or technology I point that my addiction is literature which I've spent the most time on and tech is a way of reading without spending physical space and gaming is a coping mechanism when I'm bored or have no real reading material. I do think I have a small gaming addiction, but while it would be an overwhelming difficult choice, I would erase all video games over erasing all literature.

Just completed it.

Some of the questions are a bit hard to answer though, because I feel like they depend on the game. For example, there was the yes or no question about losing track of time. For me it's sometimes, but usually not.

I always enjoy answering questionaries like this online. Having used online questionaries myself at uni im always happy to help others gather more data.

Some feedback on the questionarie:
-A little 'error' ive found in many questionaries, including this, is assuming a satitic condition on the respondent.
For example being older (32) i had a time where i gamed much more then now. lots of behaviours changed, even with whom i played, even genres. Of course its impossible to cover all bases, but its hard for me to decide how to answer some questions. For example if i take into account my whole gaming experience it could paint a different picture of how i game now; While some questions are clearly about now others infer as a whole... it is possible to account for some of that with some extra questions for perspective.
giving a specific example: nowdays i don't get lost in games (losing track of time), but in the past i did.

-How playing online with random people count as? Playing alone? colleagues, friends? I found none of the options fitting

-the game genres is what i found most lacking. For example i don't play sport games but i do play racing games, count as sports? One of my most played genres is platformers, absent. Sure i answered other for those, but makes the other much wider umbrella term.
Also a tip: lots of mobile gamers play casual games. Those can mostly be divided as 'casual', puzzle, 'relaxing' and other. The genres listed clearly have a console\pc bias, for instance the puzzle category there assumes pc puzzle games, wich i wouldn't put in the same category as say candy crush.
I suspect gathering data on mobile gamers could be really useful because i suspect theres a fair or bigger amount of game addicts on mobile then we normally see portrayed on media or online. After all its coupled with smartphone addiction. My mom once was getting really addicted, and only changed when a number of factors in her life changed; up´until then not even pressure by others made her change.

Btw a category like 'collectables' or 'grindable' games could go a long way to notice these kinds of gamers. The examples could list clickers, iddle games, gatcha games, etc.

Hope you the best on your thesis!

Finished your poll.
There are a couple of minor bugs in it, for example on of the choices is unchoosable and in another case you're asked to elaborate if you choose yes, even if you chose no.
Also, I feel there were options missing in the poll, and it doesn't represent me well.
For example, it ignores the fact that someone might have played a lot of games in the past, but not anymore. All the questions presume my gaming habits remained the same during my entire period of gaming, which spans over 3 decades...
It also presumes you either play a lot because you have an addiction, or font play s lot because you don't. Ignoring the fact you might play a lot without being addicted, or play very little because you know you have a tendency to become addicted.
I for example, never play MMORPGs, because I know I have a tendency to get addicted to them. So I avoid them completely. But the poll never presents it as an option.
