I think video games become a problem when they make people neglect their family, friends or job. Online gaming and the hundreds of games we now can get are largely responsible for that.
I'm not addicted but I'd be very hard to completely stop. I've been playing games for over 30 years now and it's one of my favourite activities. However, having a family to take care of and a time-consuming job, I can't play for hours on end anymore.
I love playing video games with my kids but I make sure their gaming time is very limited. Otherwise, they could very much become addicted.

I know for a fact some of my students are addicted and their tiredness and lack of attention clearly show in class.

Completed the questionnaire :) Yes, I definitely have a videogame addiction but I'm completely okay with that - I've had a rough life and I suffer constant health issues, both physical and mental, and videogames are my escape. I hurt nobody and my family/wife is happy regardless so I feel no need to change or alter myself or my habits in any way. Good luck with your psychology course and thank you for the giveaways! \o/

There are some errors/issues on the form:

Which of the following categories did you play or are playing the most ?
This is conflicting. Games I've been playing most is a very small category in games I have played. Either have one or the other.

Did you ever think how your life will be whiteout video games ?
Should be "Did you ever think how your life will be without video games?"

If you answer yes on the above question , please specify how it will be different ?
I answered no and am still required to write something.

Some of the answers are situationally specific and does not necessarily apply to me. For example, "I can stop myself playing when necessary, but i would prefer to finish any online game first because they can’t be paused." This should not be specific to finishing online games, but should say "I would prefer to finish my current session," or "finish what I'm currently doing."

Survey completed. Hope that help & Sorry about my bad english ^^

For me, video games are exactly like any other hobby, you have to go all out as long as you enjoy it and as long as it doesn't interfere with your private life.

Isn't there usually an "Additional Comments" section in the end of surveys like this? I kinda used the second to last question for that, but what I wanted to add was sorta relevant to it anyway.
So, yeah, might wanna add something like that.

Hi I completed the questionnaire and am from Malaysia! Interesting topic to research about.

To answer your question,

  1. It can be a big problem if it starts hindering simple everyday tasks, like eating a meal on time or just bathing. Otherwise, I see it as a not so major nor minor problem (If that makes sense?)

  2. For now no.

  3. IMO, technology itself isn't the problem. It's how the user handles the technology.

I did the survey; it was really interesting. ^_^
As for your questions:

  1. I do think gaming addiction can be a big problem, as can any addiction.
  2. Yes, I've definitely met people with gaming addictions. One of my ex-partners actually got fired because he would stay up so late playing games that he would be hours late to work in the morning.
  3. I think technology addictions tend to not get taken very seriously. There are definitely addictions that tend to be more problematic, but I think any addiction should be given time and addressed by people.

My 2 cents about games that bank on addicting their players rather than on being fun:

Also do you consider that gaming addiction it actually a big problem ? No. I think it is a real thing, but I wouldn't say it's a big problem.
Do you know people that have gaming addiction ? Not to my knowledge.
What is your opinion about technology addiction( social media, gaming etc) ? My main issue with it is people who have an addiction to sharing all their personal life (and as a consequence, part of the personal lives of all their relatives). As for the rest, it's just like any other addiction, only not directly toxic like tobacco or alcohol

What is your opinion about technology addiction( social media, gaming etc) ? it is definitely a problem, an addiction. i suffer from it to somewhat. any/every man made creation turns into an addiction. cigarettes, drugs, alcohol, and now tech. we will never learn.

the survey was fine. answered it no problem. some personal questions but all's cool. good luck with your studies.

I completed your questionnaire. Good luck with the research.

On the recent pay to win model. It's relatively new to main stream and mobile games. But the concept has been around for a long time. I had alot of online multiplayer games I was addicted to in highschool/university. I played on Barren Realms Elite by Mehul Patel in 1993-1994 ish, you had a turn generated every 30 minutes and felt the strong desire login to a BBS and use them. Moving onto Earth:2025 when the internet came along brought multi-users online at the same time and made it a whole lot worse, I used to wake at 3am-4am in the morning to play with people. It became so bad I had to intervene on myself and have tried for the last 20 years to steer away from any game that every uses time in the real world as a resource. That's become harder and harder as the concept becomes more ubiquitous and occasionally I will still find myself caught in a cycle I need to consciously break.

I've never had problems avoiding games that use money as a resource though. I guess that's just because I'm a tight arse :)

For me videogames are like picking up a book and going through it. If the story in the book is good, it is hard to get off it, as it gets more interesting and entertaining. With videogames, You are the narrator of how the story unfolds (depends on linear/non-linear games), and that is what I like about them.
Also, it helps me with my creative processes when it comes to writing music, as I am aspiring to be a music artist creating soundtracks for games, movies.

P.S. Even though in my teenage years I spent most of my free time playing videogames not going out and partying, I learned a lot of valuable information through them. My English, definitely increased in both use and vocabulary with gaming as it is not my native language.

I do hope I won't...

The temptation of more games (the whitelist GAs) made me participate in a questionnaire about video game addiction

How is that

Answered. Some questions were a bit inconclusive though.
I do play games to relax. But of course I also might also do it for satisfaction or because I'm bored, frustrated etc.
Point is that I just as well might read a book, watch a movie, talk with a friend etc. for these reasons. They aren't the reason why I play video games.
