Sounds great, add it to the insane backlog of shows/movies/games/books/life!

I've certainly got a nostalgic soft spot for the awesomely bad Super Mario Bros and Mortal Kombat films. Resident Evil flicks are late-night guilty pleasures. I enjoyed Warcraft quite a bit. The first Tomb Raider is also another guilty pleasure I'll watch when I stumble across it.

Max payne....
has been the worst movie in the history of movies, maybe ever

bad Yirg, couldnt even read 5 sentences zelg wrote to the end b4 commenting ;p last sentence in OP says it will be book-related not game-related. Too soon to tell whether it will be adaptation or just based on, thus I used word "related" ;p

Halo: Forward Unto Dawn was pretty good and it's on Netflix.
Thing is, it is very good because, while it is canon to the games, it does not deal with the Master Chief and the aliens for the most part, but on a group of students in a military academy.
And it has no angst teen drama. Which is great.

I personally didn't like Fall of Reach at all... making it animated instead of using actors was understandable, but the animation quality was horrible, they changed many of the scenes without good justification other than to fit them into the running time.
Not to mention they didn't actually show The Fall of Reach... should have been called "Halo: Blue Team" or something like that in my opinion.
But it's still watchable.
And both Forward Unto Dawn and The Fall of Reach can be watched by people that are not familiar with the Halo story and lore, which is always good.

Witcher won't be based on a game and Bagiński is enthusiast of book series, also they will be working with books author :) so question is "Are they good book adaptations in tv series" and my answer - yes, there are

Not based on a video game but, for example, Rurouni Kenshin was one of the best adaptations that comes to my mind and that worked pretty well considering all the possible limitations while tackling the subject in a live action manner.
So, in my opinion, it's very possible for the Witcher TV show to be able to successfully depict the same atmosphere that delighted the gamers and readers all over the world. Hopefully that's the case. But, depending on their budget and their approach, this could also result in a disaster. I guess time will tell how good it will end up and if it manages to stay long enough for its story to take form and not be dropped like many other shows .

I enjoyed Super Mario Bros, if only for John Leguizamo as Luigi & Dennis Hopper as Bowser.

It is not adaptation, just loosely based, but I really did enjoy Silent Hill movie. It is great if you can forget about source material, which is clearly superior, but as a movie itself it's great. One of the most climatic horror visuals I've ever seen in a movie :>

In terms of TV shows there was the Chinese Paladin and Xuan-Yuan Sword: Scar Of Sky tv series which were very popular in China based on a long running series of Taiwanese RPG games that go back to the early 90s. I guess we have Mortal Kombat in the west.

Isn't it more based on books though? Maybe the games made them popular but they, as far as I know, have a pretty good adherence to the books. I don't mind anyone correcting my English as it looks a bit odd to me but I'm too lazy to figure it out at the moment.
Edit: I notice I'm late to the party, as usual, so feel free to ignore my comment :)
Edit2: Maybe your question was unrelated to the OP though? In that case that hard part, at least for me, would be determining which games was not based on stories from other media to begin with :)

There was actually a Witcher TV series about 20+ years back. It followed the first couple books relatively accurately, but had the kind of visuals of the time: so if you liked Hercules or Xena back then, then maybe give it a shot. It's also only in Polish, so you may have to find subs for it as well.

It's gonna be bad like the old witcher show. Especially if Netflix makes it. They probably gonna call it like "Dear Novigrad People" or some dumb shit.

"Especially if Netflix makes it'?
hmm.. House of Cards, Stranger things, Marvel tv series which are first tv series about comics that aren't shitty, 13 reasons why, Narcos, Orange is the New Black... oh sure Netflix doesn't know shit about making tv series

Don't forget all the Netflix original Anime shows.

The books are nice, slightly overrated but nice and netflix is netflix :O
They have my curiosity :p

The important thing to know about this is, they are making the TV show based on the books with Sapkowski (the writer) being a consultant. That means it has a real shot to be great, especially since Netflix have a good track record with their own shows. As a fan of the books and the video games I'm seriously excited.

As I want to add from my side - It really appears that netflix really wants his own big fantasy production as it's genre which become \very popular lately, so there's big chance for great founding for this project connected to exploit empty slot after HBo will finish their Game of Thrones and Netflix will try to drag HBO's viewers to them :) so there's really good chance to expect really big and well made project

to add to you - Platige Image is best known for their animation, 3d graphics and special effects, it's their main area they nwork on, so it brings up hope for good quality opf at least effects, unlike last Witcher tv adaptation which luckilly never left Poland ;p

And they already did good job with special effects in short movies about polish legends ;p so they know their jobs

Oh, we've seen it too - it was broadcast on a federal TV network, no less ;) Btw russian wiki page for it has more info then polish one.

Well, I'm optimistic. Netflix seems a good choice since they require less boundaries to have than TV channels, and the distribution will be much easier.

you better hope it's bad......we dont want to see the writer throwing another fit over his name promoting the entire franchise and somehow it's the game/series fault that the books stopped meeting expectations

It wasnt for the lack of control, he legit wasnt interested in Video games. What was surprising is that he thinks they used his name, and the lack of sales had to do with wrong expectations fans had after playing the games.
As a writter, he will always put his work first, especially when you have to make compromises when working with a studio, in fact he said somewhere "A story can only be contained in a book."
The writer is a consultant on the show so I doubt he'd throw a fit it it turned out good ;)
There will be more fucking in Season 1 then the entire show of GOT.

Netflix makes great TV series, so I have high hopes for this.

And the reason is one: The book is dotted with the folklore echoes of medieval Europe, and eastern Europe in particular. And the game was so excellent because it was made by the Poles, that is, people who understand what they are dealing with. I'm afraid that American producers simply will not be able to convey the true atmosphere and mood of the original story.

keep in mind that Netflix is not about to do it alone but in collaboration with Platige Image, which is polish company, Tomasz Bagiński and Jarosłąw Sawko who were working on Witcher movie in Platige, and with consultations from Andrzej Sapkowski, book author, so it's not just american production but american-polish co-production so there is always hope.

Are you a fan of the game or novel? because they are not entirely the same
I came from the future and I can guarantee this for you
Really? because im willing to make a bet, even knowing that GOT will slowly drop in quality and rating has it goes on, that after the first season it will still have a lower score and fan base then GOT :P

just don't read the newest book (in polish it was called Sezon Burz, so english would be idk - Season of Storms?) which he released years after saga and success of the games. It is horrible - it's cynical cashgrab done on popularity of the games, it's not only badly written but story is not important at all and it didn't feel like Witcher novel at all :/ It was more like some poor fanfiction, just with good redaction/editing from publisher :/ Stick just to saga (aka 1st 7 books)

Based upon the way that Netflix has handled Daredevil/Jessica Jones/Luke Cage/Iron Fist [a couple of stumbles, but overall, freaking AWESOME], then yeah, I will definitely watch it. It has potential to be the first good video-game-to-TV-series ever.

may work, but tbh I'd be worried many ppl would think "oh, it's Aragorn" instead of associating him with character. Also keep in mind that books take time like 15 years b4 games, so no need for older actor, just don't get some freaking teenager/22yo ;p I'd gladly see this role going to some lesser known name, maybe some theathrical actor, so we could have unbiased view on it, not comparing him to previous/other roles and let him make name for himself ;p

As long as they don't cast Vin Diesel like the crappy movie did, I'll watch it.

I think Vin works for Universal Pictures and has his own production company.
I guess what im saying, is that you wouldn't be caught by surprise.
Maybe your thinking of The Rock who unfortunately is often given the task of holding a sinking ship with his charisma
Comment has been collapsed.
No, I'm thinking of Vin Deisel. He was cast in that abomination of a Witcher movie that we had.
Comment has been collapsed.
Never heard of it :O
i dont eve know what that movie has to do with Witcher but here, taken from IMDB:
Production Co: One Race Films.
He wasn't cast, he cast himself :D
Next time you will know

UPDATE: Teaser is out!
Long story short, after success of Witcher games Tomasz Bagiński, Oscar winning polish producer and his studio Platige Image bought licence to make Witcher movie. Now they sold it to Netflix, and Netflix in collaboration with Platige is going to make full Witcher TV series. So what ya think? You'd watch it? You hope it will turn to be great or rather disaster? Important side-note - series will be related rather to books than video games ;)
