38€ on Steam, 34€ on GOG.

For this price HOW CAN YOU NOT PRE-ORDER IT!?!?

EDIT: they fixed the price on Steam, now it's 43,99€

The prices are very good either way, but I've yet to play the first 2 (I have them though) and my PC isn't nearly powerful enough for a game like Witcher 3, I could at most play it on low settings probably. Therefore I'll wait. I'm in no rush. But it does look like one hell of a game and even the price is great, so it's more the fact that I haven't played the first 2 and my PC won't be able to run it properly.

I'm in your situation, but my PC can't handle the Witcher 1... when I upgrade I'll give that backlog a big hit.

So.....don't pre-order from the company that has great PC releases and offers DLC for free but pre-order from the people who made the PC version on GTA4?

Well, first I gotta buy a PC capable of running it, and only then I can think about buying the game. And when the time comes I'll definitely get it on GOG regardless of the price, because these guys deserve every cent (even thought I'm mostly Steam oriented and I don't buy fully priced games). And it will be after the game is out, because pre-ordering games is bad practice.

I'm pretty sure they come up with a more or less solid game (had a lot of fun with the first two Witcher games), but i'm still not preordering. This whole preorder stuff is heading into the wrong direction, especially when we talk about selling a game 9+ Months(!) before the actual release. I mean they basically shift a part of the developement risks to their customers, because there's a LOT of stuff that can happen in those 9 Months and personally i get the feeling that the gap between start of preorders and release is increasing more and more. If other Developers continue to copy this, we might see something like "pay now - play in 2 years" on a regular base soon.

Pre-ordering a game that will release only February of 2015. Really? I mean, it's a bit early to pre-order it. That's a whole new level of pre-orders (taking money from gamers 1 year earlier, sucess).

If you don't pre-order it then you're not a real fan of the series. Or even video games, really. Go back to consoles.

That's not true - many people dislike pre-orders in general due to the unreliability of them. WatchDogs gave a good example.

As much as I loved the Witcher books and games, I don't pay for a job nine months in advance... :) And perhaps greenman will have a better discount than the 20% the real fans already receive. :)

Why would I per-order when I can buy it once it's released? It's not like they're going to run out of copies and I will have to wait for months before I can secure one.

Kind of pointless to order a game so far in advance and a bit risky, no matter how good the trailer may look.

You probably could have said the same thing (always delivering) about Gearbox too based on the Borderlands games, but then they made Aliens: CM... And Gearbox is not the only studio that had a good reputation and then made a crappy game.

It's always best to wait till the first reviews are out before buying a game, but people are always throwing money at pre-orders, which is only good for the publishers.

If you want to trade Steam version with someone from Russia/Ukraine/CIS/whatever, two things to consider.

1) European Union has different SubID, so if you'll be able to activate copy from RU/US/BR it will probably welcome you with nice big haha, no play, just like W2 did.
2) USA and Russia actually use same SubID, so if you'll get it activate is right away, or you're risking Steam adding activation-locks in the future. But after activating it you should be good to go.

"European Union has different SubID, so if you'll be able to activate copy from RU/US/BR it will probably welcome you with nice big haha, no play , just like W2 did."
Interesting, I didn't know that. Of course, I'm realizing that the copy I bought and activated is RU and not EU...
Is your screenshot related to a pre-order gift ?
The gift I activated was not marked as region-restricted in any way (no exclamation mark about activation, no mention of language availability per region), and of course no trick was used (no VPN or such thing). Since that, can I feel safe ? Or must I really prepare myself to feel deeply f**ked next year ?

Screenshot is from W2, not mine.

Steam loves to retro-active add various region locks to SubIDs. Usually right before release (loudest was Borderlands 2 fuck-up that was fixed only because Borderlands 2 RU was being sold in non-RU countries, but had only Russian language - so many people who bought it legally couldn't understand shit).

I have no idea how it will end in this case. I myself wasn't in situation where game was play-locked (I do have two Ru tagged games, Darkness 2 without playing lock and Xcom Preorder, where Valve unlocked pre-order version), there are stories when Valve unblocks game for early buyers (like that Xcom) and legends about Good Guy Support changing SubID, most stories say all you can get is Valve deleting it (without returning money, of course) from your account so you can buy correct-region version :(

There was a rather nasty surprise with Aliens: Colonial Marines when it got released. The preorder was not region locked, was not marked as region-restricted in any way. However, the publisher locked all Russian copies of the game with a "onlyallowrunincountries" IP lock the day before the release, which resulted in unplayable copies in people's libraries. People started complaining, and Steam Support, being Steam Support, was pretty inconsistent in their reaction. Some got their copy packed back into the gift form to be traded or returned to sellers. Some were not so lucky and were given an option to remove the Russian version from their libraries without any refunds.

Now, the situation with Witcher 3 is a bit different. The version (SubID) of the game sold in Russian steam store is the same as the one sold in the US store. This means that Steam cannot just apply an IP lock to all existing copies of that SubID, otherwise copies purchased in the US will demand Russian IP addresses. This leaves us with a lock that prevents activation outside the region of purchase.

Thus, I see 4 possible outcomes so far:

  1. The game will remain region-free.
  2. The Russian store will receive a new SubID, which will be IP-locked. Previously purchased copies of the game will remain unaffected.
  3. The Russian version of the game will receive an activation lock. Copies in people's libraries will be unaffected. Copies in people's inventories will become region-locked.
  4. Steam will introduce a new type of region lock or change the way traditional locks behave, making the above assumptions invalid.

Thanks PsyKo & SleepyCat.
If this ends with some language-lock I'll probably be fine, as language packs can usually be found and manually added... I would feel quite safe if I was in the US, but I'm in France, so I'll probably have to wait until next year to know how it ends. Since I activated the gift here without VPN, it wouldn't be fair to lock it after.
Btw, Psyko, I understood that your screenshot is from W2. I was just wondering if it was activated from a key or from a gift. Something you probably don't know since it's not your own screenshot :)

Language limitation is also impossible here due to the fact that US and RU share the same SubID. American users would end up with Russian-language-only copies of the game, and I seriously doubt that would happen after Borderlands.

This is valid for both english and russian languages (same SubID), but not for other languages (french in my case, different SubID => EU). At least there are turnarounds if the game is allowed to run...

I thought your copy of the game came from Russia? If so, then it has the Russian/US SubID, not EU.

Yes, my copy is from Russia, so same SubID that US. If there is a language lock, I'll have the choice between english ans russian. Since I'm french, I'd like to play it in french, this is why I may be screwed because I don't have an EU copy. Sorry if I wasn't clear :)
