Has the Steam sale lost its shine?
Option 4: They've been overrated for years, and this year is no different.

It's funny, Insurgency was on sale cheaper BEFORE the winter sales started.

I kinda liked not having to stress over "should I get it... or should I wait... it COULD get a flash sale." It's just a pure "is this price acceptable to me? I'm not sure, I'll think about it till the 4th. or yes, yes it is: purchase"

To be fair.. it wasn't as interesting or exciting as past sales. A lot of older ones felt like a game in and of themselves.

This. I was hoping that since they kept the gems around and the combine them and create a pack that it would be back. But it wasn't to be. A massive shame.

Yeah, let's keep games going on sale in the dark to keep people from planning out cash and possibly acquiring some extra real life money to put towards said games seeing as the sale lasts longer then a week. It should totally be a surprise like I'm reading a mystery novel. Cuz I go to Steam sales for the drama rather then bargains.
How dare Steam discount thousands upon thousands of games and not include a stupid clicker game that gives a little badge for internet dick points. It's just rude of them to be even doing a sale in the first place without taking the time to consider what people really want - shit not related to saving themselves money.
You're so pretentious, OP.

It varies from month to month. Yes, I am salty. I mostly see people shitting on the Steam sale. A time of the year associated with giving and people are mad that they didn't get enough. This is the first time I was rustled enough to bite the bait and actually reply to one of these. I was actually fortunate enough to get two Steam gift cards this year from family and a friend. I took to the Steam sale like a duck to water, allocated out my funds, and thought how thankful I was for the unexpected windfall to finally be able to play Scholar of The First Sin after waiting months and months being an incredible poorfag.
I digress, my words did come out a bit strong. It happens when you live the salty life.

"Give a hand and they'll ask for an arm" a french saying for this.
I didn't really care for the clicker games or flash deals, I bought a lot of games for good prices like all of the previous sales, would've bought more if I didn't have a potato of a computer, so I get your point :) (wolfenstein at 85% off :'( )
It's just that i found your post a bit aggressive so i commented on it.
Anyway, wishing you a happy new year and a lot of fun with Darksouls.

Your point is made more aggressively than I would like, but I agree with you. Every year there are people complaining about how the sale isn't good enough. I don't get it. We should be thankful that all of these games are being discounted instead of complaining that they aren't discounted enough.
I also find it funny that these complaints are being posted on a site where people give games away.

Yeah, I came out of the gate a little strong. It's been building seeing people trashing the sale and not voicing my opinion. I keep thinking of the saying give an inch and they'll take a mile. Like if every game was half off people would be like....well why can't they be 60 percent off?
Oh my god the irony is palpable. Sweet delicious irony.

Not how I would word it but you made my point for me.
I'm pretty sure a lot of thought went into the steam sale and that they believe they have arrived at the best option for all people (which I agree with).

There are few weekly sales though, for example I just purchased Assassin Creed Blackflag it was 75% off till yesterday. That sale lasted only for 4 days.

I mean there's a couple things a that aren't awful. Games like Skyrim matched their lowest recorded and Tomb Raider beat its lowest.
But the rest is awful, I agree lol

Just look at papers please and dynasty warriors
Discounts are lower than weekly sales

OK, I thought I was alone in thinking that. I really miss the events (yes, even the silly clicker game) and voting on the flash sales, too. I liked the feeling of having some sort of impact on what games received the deep discounts during the flash sales.
I honestly don't understand the reasoning (outside of the new refund policy, which I agree must have had some effect) behind removing the daily/.flash sales. More people checking the store more often typically means more products being sold. Even if a certain percentage of those "impulse buys" are refunded, there are still going to be a great number that are not. From a marketing standpoint, it just doesn't make sense. -_-

I also miss the events and haven't actually bought anything yet during this sale. I was hoping to buy Far Cry 3 with the money I made from cards during the year and it didn't even go on sale.
However, I will still buy something with the money in my Steam wallet. But will wait and see what's included in this Friday's Monthly Bundle.

If you have enhanced steam installed. This might help

I don't think it needs to be shorter. Some of us only get paid every 2 weeks.

Lots of people would buy the game at the sale price then not touch it to see if it went cheaper or a flash sale, then refund said game if it went cheaper and purchase that.
Which then they have to process and so forth. To make support quicker and easier during sales the only way to remedy this is either do not allow refunds during sales or get rid of flash sales and make one price for the whole sale.Shame on people for buying games when they are discounted lol.I always waited till the end for the encore i am not to worried about trying to save and get everything off for 90% and i am a cheap bastard lol.If i can not afford the games i want that tells me either A. Get a new hobby or B. make more money
Comment has been collapsed.
For me, kind of. Mostly because I couldn't afford much. Probably more that I've lost my touch with video games.

It was presented badly, for me. It gave deals that I already knew about wasn't impressed by.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, now that I have around 350 games (I know, not a lot compared to others here) and a pretty big backlog, buying games is not that big of a deal anymore. I get stuff that I really want or that is on my wishlist, but other then that, I don't care anymore.
Comment has been collapsed.
From my point of view it was actually good. Because I have so many games I try not to get tempted, and when the deal is short lived that tends to work well. I'm not going to buy a lot, but probably more than if the games I wanted were discounted for a very short time.

This sale was pretty good to me. I'm actually glad it doesn't have flash sales and what not. If there were, I probably would have spent a lot more money on this sale. Plus there would have been a lot of drama everywhere ("Oh, look how sad I am, I bought a game and now it is 2 bucks cheaper!"). I don't see why there should be extra stuff in the first place. It's not like if you go to a sale in another webstore that there are games to play or badges to collect.

Not sure why publishers were shy on the sales this year when the only change was the flash sales. Was the flash sales really important to publishers?

Truthfully, there are still some "daily" deals. South Park: The Stick of Truth, for instance, only had a discount when it was featured on the store front, and the Resident Evil HD Remaster doesn't have a discount yet until (presumably) the whole RE series gets featured on the store front as well.
I don't mind the same discounts across the board, I just wish there was more to the event than a flat-out bad comic that I stopped reading after day 2 or 3, and skipping through queues to get cards -queues that keep popping up japanese visual novels no matter how many times I click "not interested" on them- is somehow even more tedious than just entering the clicker games. In this regard, even the summer sale was better as an actual event, which I believe is unprecedented.

looks like we can get this sale as a model of "how you don't do a sale"...
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes it has. But because the shine was twinkling and annoying, I'm glad it has. That clicking mini-game last year was so mind-numbingly stupid, it was about time they packed it in with the these semi-retarded, bullshit events.

Didn't even log in for three days where as before with the flash sales and daily deals I was even logging in at 2am in the morning to make sure I didn't miss any of the flash deals whilst sleeping. Sure its been better for my sleeping patterns but I literally walked away with about a handful of games this time around when normally I would bought much, much more by now.
The fact they didn't even bother to make a proper event with it this time was really disappointing. It was like absolutely no thought went into it at all.
I had a whole lot of games I wanted to buy but the discounts on them where so abysmal (and no they were not brand new games) that I decided not to even bother with their 15/40% discounts. Decided to rather keep what Steam wallet cash I have left for Rise of the Tomb Raider and Dark Souls III when the both release early next year.
If they going to continue along this path (the new refund system has undoubtedly got something to do with it) then they shouldn't discount all the games at once but rather as they feature some of them on their front page to at least keep an air of mystery about the sale.
